Mania Review: Transcendence (Article) - 4/18/2014 12:23:57 PM

I'm still kinda on the fence about seeing this now or waiting for Netflix or Red Box.  In the end I'll probably end up going to see it just because I've been quite the cinema junkie as of late.  Last week alone I hit the theater three times in consecutive nights.  I dunno what it is, but I just enjoy the theater experience.  But I only go Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.  Wednesday is bowling league and I stay away from the theaters on the weekends because of all the annoying people.  I really love the deal that Bow Tie Cinema's Movieland does with the $6 Tuesday nights.

Anyhoo, I haven't really been impressed with the trailers and TV spots for this one.  But again, I'm guessing I'll end up planting my ass in a theater seat for it one night when I'm bored or just feel like getting out of the house.

Mania Review: Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Article) - 4/15/2014 9:35:02 AM

Saw it again last night, this time in 3D.  I think it was even better the second time around.  I was trying to stick around to see the second after credits scene, but they started to turn the lights up and kick me out.  It was after midnight and I was only patron left in the building.  In fact, the big Regal Cinemas neon lights and everything got turned off right after I walked out the front door.  Anyone know where to find that second post-credits scene online?  I can find the first one with the Twins, but I can't find the second one.  I heard it's nothing spectacular, just Bucky standing in front of the Captain America display at the Smithsonian and seemingly realizing that Cap was telling the truth about their history together.

Also, I forgot to mention that Final Chapter was one of my favorites of the series.  Maybe THE favorite, though Part 3 holds a special place in my heart as well.  And I dunno about anyone else, but I actually really liked the reboot.  I remember going to see it with my buddy and his wife one day when we got off work and even his wife loved it.  I thought it somewhat recaptured the feel and the spirit of the original four movies.  And I thought Derek Mears did a great job with Jason.  He had tremendous physicality and good screen presence.  I don't understand all the hate for that one.

Yeah, I was always under the impression that it was intended to be the last one.  And then they royally screwed the pooch with A New Beginning, which I think is the worst of the series.  Even worse than Jason X.  JX at least was so stupid and ridiculous it was entertaining.  And lots of entertaining ways that he killed people too.  And of course Uber Jason at the end was kinda cool.  But yeah, I remember watching New Beginning as a kid and was so pissed off that it ended up being the director of that home pulling a copy cat killing spree.  It wasn't even Jason!  I felt cheated.  No bueno.

Oh, and a funny story:  I was walking down the hall toward the theater (and this upcoming week is Spring Break for kids) and I saw these three kids, two boys and a girl, who were obviously not 18, seemingly getting ready to walk into Oculus.  There was a cop sitting down hanging out next to one of the big cardboard movie displays (even in the suburbs of Richmond we often have off-duty cops around on the weekend and right now during Spring Break, and then during the summer) and I guess the kids didn't see him.  He was like, "You kids got IDs?"  They immediately turned and looked at him and then changed direction and said, "Oh, we're going to see Rio 2."  Which was on the other side of the hall.  This is a 14 screen theater and IMAX.  No way of making the mistake of walking through the wrong door.  I had to smile to myself.  I remember doing it a couple times as a kid, but usually just because the movie we wanted was sold out so we bought a ticket for a different movie and then snuck in.  Did it with Addams Family.

makabriel, are you talking about They?  Because if so, this is nothing like They.  At all.  I kinda liked They though.

It was pretty damn good.  Not exactly what I expected, and that's probably what I liked most about it.  I now understand what Rob was saying when he compared it to Cabin In the Woods.  And don't take that as a bad thing, guys!  You'll see what I mean once you watch it.  I'm not so sure I would even call it a horror movie.  Trust me.  It's probably not what you're expecting it to be.

Yeah, Conjuring was pretty good.  Definitely had me on the edge a couple times wondering what was coming next.

Anyway, I'm getting ready to go see it tonight.  Starts in about 35 min.

"He's killing me!  He's killing me!"

Greatest last words in a horror movie. Or maybe any movie.
