Mania Review: Man of Steel (Article) - 6/19/2013 9:56:58 PM

I just feel sorry for people who are taking this WAY too seriously.  It's a movie.  It's a movie BASED ON a comic book character.  It's not the comic book.  Again, if you want the comic books then READ the comic books.  Don't bother watching the movies.  I'm an avid reader of novels and I've seen several of the novels I've read get made into movies.  Every single one of those movies is different from the book.  I don't cry about it though.  I enjoy it for what it is.  I understand that what's on paper can never be completely and accurately translated to film.  That's the whole point of reading the book!  Why should comics be any different?  Perhaps it's just pretentiousness, which is what some of you often accuse movie critics of being...

This is one of those situations where I am so damn glad that I don't read comic books so that I can just enjoy the movie for what it is.  A MOVIE!  And it was grand...

monketfoot, I didn't catch that allegory, but I certainly noticed the scene where he was holding the Plato book.  I figured it held some kind of significance.

zillaman, I hope he goes on a rampage...

Wow, Shogunn, you need a nap after that?  Lol!

But in all seriousness, I understand the point you're making.  I think what I liked most about the movie though, aside from finally having a Superman that actually gets to kick some ass, is the way they told the origin story.  It was essentially the same, but they tweaked some of the details so that it didn't feel like "been there, done that."  I think that's really the only way they could have done it.  I think some people forget that Superman Returns was a sequel, not a "reboot."  With Man of Steel being a reboot, they kinda HAD to tell the origin story.  But I don't see how they could have told it the same way and still gotten people excited about it.  They had to make some changes to the details in order to make it fresh and avoid boring the audience.  Which is also why I like the fact that Lois already knows who he is.  It really changes the dynamic of their relationship and makes it fresh, which is again what I think is the key to really getting more people excited about this new franchise.  And telling it as more of an alien-on-earth story is great.  I love it.  I think with the Chris Reeves movies they made Superman seem more like just a human being with super powers.  They can't just rehash the same ole Supes.

Oh, and he's also in the new Hatchet III, which I can't wait to see when it hits Redbox or Netflix.  Wish it were playing in a theater in town.

Yeah, he's mostly done stunt work in Hollywood and he played Jason in the new Friday the 13th and played one of the predators in...well...Predators, haha.  But he got his start doing theater/comedy/improv.  He's done some small parts in other movies and TV shows here and there.  I've never actually seen him "act" either, but looking at his background and how he got his start and also his look...I think he could pull it off.  Especially judging by the direction they're taking this new Superman, being darker and more serious and less campy.  I'd say at least let him audition.

And I really couldn't care less about Lois knowing his identity already.  I just like the direction they're going with this new franchise in general.  It's different.  So what?  If it doesn't follow the comics to a T then why is that such a bad thing?  I thought a little originality in a movie was a good thing.  I realize that I'm not comics guy and maybe I miss some things, but Jesus.  If you want it to be just like the comics then read the comics and forget watching the movies.  And I liked how he explained why he chose being a reporter as his job.  But again, I'm a movie guy, not a comics guy.  I thought it was a fun movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Damnit, Mania!  I just spent like eight minutes typing out my thoughts after just getting back from seeing it with my pops.

All I'm really gonna take the time to say right now.  But I did notice maybe an Easter egg that no one else has mentioned.  Maybe it wasn't actually an Easter egg and it was inadvertant.  The scene after he saved the guys on the oil rig and was walking up to the house wearing his ripped pants and was checking the clothes line for some new duds.  Now, I know Hulk/Banner are part of Marvel and Superman is DC, but it really jumped out at me as a possible nod to Hulk/Banner.  And maybe the fact that he didn't grab clothes from the line (I realize he didn't because they were wet) was just Snyder's way of paying his respects but not actually ripping off the idea.  Just my thoughts.

Oh, and I still say Derek Mears would make an excellent Lex Luthor.

So as I said, I'm taking my dad to see it Tuesday night (tomorrow as I type this).  I can go downtown to Movieland and get us $6 tickets with my club card, but it doesn't work for 3D movies.  Is it worth spending basically twice as much to go to the theater here in the 'burbs to see it in 3D?
