Godzilla Update

Iron Man 3’s scribe, Drew Pearce, is taking a crack at the new Godzilla script. The new film will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters). It seems as if there is some debate over how old or how young the lead characters should be. With a teaser trailer shown at Comic Con this year I have to ask, why are they still retooling the script?

Variety is reporting that Pearce will have four weeks to rewrite the script. Pearce, who has written Sherlock Holmes 3, is working from a an original draft by David Goyer (Batman Begins), David Callahan (The Expendables), and Max Borenstein (Swordswallors and the Thin Men).

Looks like it might be a while until Godzilla is up from the depths.

Check out the story on Variety here

Thanks to DarthoftheDead for the submission.

Never a good sign when you bring in a fourth writer, especially after Goyer took a crack at it.

Just keep it simple and try to avoid any shots of Godzilla swimming/laying eggs.

My gosh, how difficult can this possibly be?! All we want to see is a bad-ass looking Godzilla laying complete annihilation on a big city!

I guess they haven't been able to create the right love story to fit into the script... sheesh!

Instead of another Godzilla there should be a movie based on that old Nintendo game, Rampage.  Who here didn't waste a lot of "homework time" playing that mindless game?  Totally awesome, bra.

I agree VTGamehendge.......I played Rampage a LOT when it was in the arcades, long before it became a home game! Put a ton of quarters in that machine! Totally bad ass, panty.....(you know, as in BRA and PANTY!)

Sorry, lame joke.......

They have to make sure it sucks worse than the Matthew Broderick version

They have written Sherlock Holmes 3!  Now that is news.

Godzilla should be the easiest script in the world to write.  Forget the American version.  It doesn't matter how old the human characters are (just lose the annoying kid).  I hate to break it to them, but it is not Shakespeare.  People want to see Godzilla tearing the hell out of Tokyo (or, insert whichever city.  Just not New York City.)  If I were their team take a cue from the original.  Did I care if the lead was a middle aged white dude?  No.

I'm surprised Goyer's version wasn't golden.  Guess in the meantime, I can get a real fix by just playing the video game.

i think it's a good thing to take another shot at it. it shows they realy want to make a good godzilla film instead of just rushing it. then again if this keeps on, and they don't get it together it will be a disaster in a non godzilla way.  about the age group i think it's playing it safe, who wants a love story in a godzilla film? or a anoying kid, and such.. no doubt the FX will be great so hope they figure it out and get rolling.. and if all else fails just have a big monster bash of epic faild portions, lol...

What's to re-write?  A fishing trawler is destroyed off the coast of Japan under mysterious circumstances.  A seaside village gets trashed soon after and giant radioactive footprints are found there.  Before you know it, a giant lizard shooting atomic flames from it's mouth is ravaging Tokyo.  Humans invent a Deus Ex Machina to drive Godzilla away until the sequel.  Credits.

There's no need to re-invent the wheel here.  They tried that once already, and it was a disaster.  K.I.S.S.

Not sure if I got mod'ed or not, thought I posted.

How hard is it to make a Godzilla movie?   He shows up, stomps the city, humanity fights back as creatively as they can.  They really over think this.

Wiseguy 10/9/2012 8:13:54 AM

From what I've read it seems they're going for an older lead which brings a smile to my face. It gets annoying having some tweener or teenager save the day.

I also read on other sites that Godzilla will be fighting other monsters. So she'll be more in the role of hero as opposed to city stomper.

Can't wait for this. And btw this re-write doesn't appear to be causing any delays on the announced release date. So we should see this in 2014 as planned, at least so far
