The Strain: The Box Review (Article) - 7/21/2014 8:17:27 AM

Perhaps the buildup would be more enjoyable if we'd all been kept in the dark about the impending large event. It's almost as though the previews gave us too much of a spoiler.

Exactly.  This is how it is done in the book.  Which is why it works there and not here.  They felt that they had to introduce all the major players in the pilot.

The Strain: The Box Review (Article) - 7/21/2014 8:12:53 AM

I am about to give up on this show.

The book, for all its overwriting (a drinking game based on descriptive metaphores will put you under the table by page 5), had a slow and powerful build-up.  When you finally reached the confrontation with the Master, the tension was incredible.

The show decided to completely throw all of this away. The pilot included scenes from half-way into the first book.  For example, the cabinet theft happens during the eclipse.  Characters were introduced too fast (why is the TV Setrakian an idiot who makes a spectacle during a press conference?).  Surprise betrayals are already revealed (Phelps and Stoneheart).

There is nothing left for this show.  The build-up and investigation is trashed.  All you have left is vampire hunting.  And most of that is during 2nd season.  If the show lasts that long.

The Summer of '84: Conan the Destroyer (Article) - 6/30/2014 2:43:16 PM

While this is supposed to be the more family-friendly Conan, the sexualization of a very underage Olivia D'abo (she was something like 14 at the time) is more objectionable than anything that happened in the first film.

I will always remember this movie for the guy who died because of the European voltage difference.

Mania Review: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Article) - 5/2/2014 9:41:26 AM

I am going to see this for the simple reason that it is still possible to get this movie on 35MM, not digital, so my struggling drive-in is showing it.  If it wasn't worried about my drive-in staying in business, I would skip this.

Shock-O-Rama: The Drive-In Bucket List (Article) - 4/17/2014 3:50:22 PM

I still do not know if my favorite drive in is going to open this year. December was the point of no return for digital conversion. There is another drive in around here (same distance, but opposite direction from me) which did make the conversion, but I do not like their atmosphere as much.

Game of Thrones: The Lion and The Rose Review (Article) - 4/14/2014 10:27:47 AM

@isgrimmer

As I've not read the books, I have no idea where the Bran storyline is going, but for now it bores me. Luckily it was very short.

It is the storyline closest to traditional YA fantasy. With all of its problems.  But the storyline has already reached Dance of Dragons territory, so I think the show writers are going to take a lot of liberties with it. Otherwise, they are going to have to drop the character for a season or two.

Book Review: Game of Thrones: A Pop-Up Guide to Westeros (Article) - 4/4/2014 6:33:14 AM

The backstory of the Mad King and how Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark came to be in power fascinates me.

You know that this is completely glossed over in the show, and the books have a lot more detail on this, right?

Doctor Who: The Moonbase DVD Review (Article) - 3/25/2014 7:37:43 AM

The pacing of the old shows was much, much slower.  This was true of a lot of shows of that time; see Dark Shadows.  A large part of the time was spent on atmosphere over character development and plot.  In some cases (e.g. the Hinchcliffe seasons of the Tom Baker era) this has aged well.  In other cases, it hasn't.
