Winter of '83: The Keep (Article) - 12/17/2013 5:50:17 AM

Not aliens. A demon/vampire. Not that you could have figured that out from the movie.

Winter of '83: The Keep (Article) - 12/16/2013 8:12:19 PM

The Keep, what a wonderous mess.  I am sorry, but the Tangerine Dream soundtrack is one of the best things about that movie (just as their soundtrack is one of the highlights of Legend).  The movie has some excellent set pieces that, together with the soundtrack, act as great music videos.

The true problem with the film is a lack of coherency.  It has marvelous set pieces, but the narrative is too fast and disjointed to make any sense.  Unless you have read Paul Wilson's novel, it is impossible to follow what is going on.

The Winter of '83: Sudden Impact (Article) - 12/11/2013 2:33:41 PM

Sondra Locke was an academy nominated actress before she was involved with Clint.  That period affected her career as much as his.

Strain Gets 13 Episodes for FX (Article) - 11/22/2013 7:39:49 AM

The first book is okay.  The story is good, thought the writing is awful.  If you were to make a drinking game on simile usage, you wouldn't last the first few chapters.  The description of the eclipse alone has something like 9 different similes and metaphores.

The series completely goes off the rails by Night Eternal.

10 Coolest Doctor Who Villains (Article) - 11/21/2013 8:01:08 AM

If you include the Troughton stories, the Great Intelligence trumps at least half this list.

Winter of '83: A Christmas Story (Article) - 11/18/2013 5:39:32 AM

This movie did very poorly in the original theatrical release.  It is only with home viewing that it found an audience.

Fall of '83: The Dead Zone (Article) - 10/21/2013 6:45:39 AM

Even King moved in a slightly different direction with this one, staying away from straight-up horror for one of the first times in its career.

I am not sure that I agree with this.  Would you call The Stand horror?  It has a lot of similarities to the Dead Zone in terms of the themes that it explored.

31 Days of Horror Movies: Them (Article) - 10/16/2013 4:00:56 PM

Ah, the importance of a (missing) exclamation mark.  I thought this was going to be a review of Them!, the 1954 classic.

Hammer to Produce Daylight Gate (Article) - 10/9/2013 8:49:44 AM

The thing about the original Hammer was the beauty of the visuals.  It is not the same without that.

31 Days of Horror Movies: 28 Days Later (Article) - 10/8/2013 12:55:36 PM

First one is still a classic, but I hate 28 Weeks Later with a passion.  It requires too many stupid people to keep the plot moving.
