The bestial mutant known as Sabretooth is the archenemy of Wolverine. Unlike the diminutive member of the X-Men, Sabretooth is unbridled rage and fury and does not even attempt to keep his animal side in check. Rather, he revels in it.
Created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, Sabretooth made his first appearance in Iron Fist #14 (1977). He quickly made his way to the pages of the X-Men where it was established that he and Wolverine had quite an extensive past. Just how extensive is unknown, as Wolverine has been subject to memory implants and Sabretooth isn't exactly the most honest man. Sabretooth has been depicted in several incarnations of X-Men cartoons as well as two appearances on the silver screen: in the first X-Men film he was portrayed by Tyler Mane and in the more recent "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" film he was played by Liev Schreiber.
Victor Creed's origins are almost completely shrouded in mystery. It is believed that he suffered through an abusive childhood with a father who chained him up, disgusted by the boy's appearance. By the early 1900s, he had adopted the name Sabretooth, which he used while living in a Canadian frontier community and met Logan, who would later become Wolverine. Hating Logan and the love that existed between he and Silver Fox (another mutant who lived in the community), Sabretooth apparently raped and killed her, then defeated Logan in combat.
Again, much of Victor Creed's life remains a mystery. In the early 1960s, he served on Team X (part of the Weapon X program) along with Wolverine and Silver Fox. All of them had been subjected to memory implants and did not remember their previous lives together. It didn't take long for Wolverine and Sabretooth to have a falling out. At some point, Sabretooth was seduced by the shapeshifting Mystique, who bore a child named Graydon Creed. Graydon was born without any special mutant abilities and was abandoned. Sabretooth left the employ of the Weapon X program and struck out on his own as a professional criminal and assassin, working with the likes of The Hellfire Club and Constrictor, among others. He also picked up the habit of annually attacking and beating Wolverine within an inch of his life every year on Logan's birthday. Sabretooth has remained an enemy of the X-Men though he has occasionally found himself allied with them, whether by choice or not. He has been captured and employed by the government-sponsored mutant team known as X-Factor but always finds a way to escape and end up on the wrong side of the law. He even managed to find someone willing to fuse his skeleton and claws with adamantium in a process similar to Wolverine's. As of this writing, it is unknown who performed this procedure. Recently, Wolverine beheaded Sabretooth with the muramasai blade, which is capable of negating their healing factors, seemingly killing him.
Sabretooth possesses superhuman abilities very similar to those of Wolverine including enhanced senses and reflexes and a healing factor that allows him to regenerate damaged tissue at an alarmingly fast rate. In addition, his healing factor makes him immune to most drugs and poisons and slows his aging process. Sabretooth is an extraordinary hunter and hand-to-hand combatant, having been trained while in the Weapon X program.
Sabretooth has a single, razor sharp claw on the end of each finger. The claws have been infused with adamantium and are capable of cutting through anything except more adamantium.
