Paramount Pictures has set J.J. Abrams to direct the 11th STAR TREK feature. The studio is looking for a 2008 release.

J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk will produce. Abrams and Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci will write the script.

The story will center on the early days of James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission.

Codenamev I have to totally agree with you. I would love to see a Star fleet academy series that has nothing to do with Kirk and Spock. For the new movie I would love to see all out war, either the Romulun war or another war if there is one. Back to the series idea I think having it at star fleet would allow for the usual stories to be told but also new kind of Trek series that could relate to the younger generation that is now watching shows today. It would just be a great series I think but that is just adding to your idea.

i have been a trek fan since i was a kid catching reruns of TOS on TV...the only show i didn't warm up to was ENTERPRISE, at least not until its final season when it actually started going somewhere...the last trek film (NEMESIS) was only so-so...at first, i was against the idea of a prequel film, but if it is well written and they get good actors to fill the shoes of kirk and spock, then it might be a decent film...it will draw an audience because there are those unabashed trekkers out there who would go see a movie called STAR TREK: WATCHING PAINT DRY

I think allowing Abrams a shot at the franchise couldn't be better. Especially when you're letting the guy direct, write, and produce. It's about time Paramount kicked Berman to the curb. MI:3 looks to be the best film in the franchise, which says a lot for Abrams talent.

In the words of a heartbroken Darth Vader: "NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Why must the "Powers That Be" continue to due this. "We must go back in time to fill in some details/re-invision/explore early days!" The past is in the past, let it be. Star Trek and Star Wars have gotten so big that you really stunt the growth of both franchises by trying to return to their "roots". Instead of "Enterprise", "Insurrection", and "Nemesis", Star Trek would have done much better with mini-series on television. All the best stuff is on television, anyway. You wanna see the Federation after the Dominion War, there is a four episode for that; what happens after Voyager returns to the Alpha Quadrant, there is a six episode series for that. Why isn't Worf an ambassador anymore, there is a four episode arc for that. I think this is what George Lucas has planned for "Star Wars" on television. If a particular episode arc becomes popular then it could become a series or MAYBE a movie. With as big of a fan base as Star Trek has, for it to be floundering is criminal.

If you watch the special features on the Star Trek VI dvd, this was the original idea for that movie. It's sad that in nearly 20 years, they coudn't come up with a different idea. The Romulan War or a 24th century series uniifcation would have been better. But I hope it works.

I'm ready for it. TNG is dead, but bring back the original characters. They will never be able to pull it off, but what the hell, let's go for it. Oh and shogunmaster post #1, if that was your impersonation of Kirk, then you killed me. Let .. It .. Die!!!

Same characters? Been there, done that. They may have just killed the franchise for good.

I'm gonna say it. I know it's not popular, but Nemesis was a good movie. Maybe I'm the only person here that thinks this, but out of all the Trek movies, it is my 2nd favorite. Nemesis was NOT a bad movie.

Insurrection sucked. Nemesis by itself wasnt all that terrible... but after Insurrection, I was like "ok who cares?"
