Abrams Explains Shatner Snub in STAR TREK

Well, we can finally put an end to the William Shatner-cameo rumors that have raged back and forth this past year. There were rumors that the creators just couldn't find a place to fit the actor into the next Star Trek adventure and director J.J. Abrams has now confirmed that fact while talking to AMC's Sci-Fi Scanner.

Q: How do you react to William Shatner's ire at not having a role in the movie?

A: It was very tricky. We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing, but the truth is, it didn't quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn't want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves. The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling. It's funny -- a lot of the people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that.

The next adventure stars John Cho, Ben Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Winona Ryder, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Eric Bana, Leonard Nimoy, Marlene Forte and Jimmy Bennett. Director J.J. Abrams led the production, based on a screenplay by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

Star Trek will hit theaters May 8, 2009.

Nerds everywhere are writhing in their own logic. Who knows, Shatner could be dodging a bullet like Connery did with Crystal Skull.

I for one I'm glad he isn't making a cameo. Not only is his character dead, but his presence brings a certain amount of goofyness that I don't want in StarTrek anymore. Add that to his egotistical demands and I think we are better off for it.

This isn't to demean his past as Kirk, he's already been praised enough for that with 30+ years of tv series and movies. So just keep it moving Shatner.

"...a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling?"

Hmm...maybe I have misjudged Abrams.

That relives a little stress I had concerning his involvement...

I don't care how popular he is, it doesn't automatically mean he should pick up the reins of Trek. I still fear this will be another "Enterprise" type of debacle.

And "Enterprise" was the first time I ever hoped Trek would be cancelled.

Well either Shatner or Abrams is a liar. I saw an interview with Shatner and he said he would like to be in it but no one has contacted him but he wished them good luck. Now Abrams is saying Shatner "didn't" want to be in it unless the story was about Kirk. I know Shatner had ego issues in the past but I thought that was something that calmed down with age...he's what 75 or something now. Who knows....I just hope the movie is good. I thought the best way to put him in it was a cameo as the Grandfather of Kirk or something like that. I know they hired cast to be Kirks family so I was hoping for that route but oh well.

originaldave77 Connery dogde a over 300 mill bullet with crystal. Hmmmmm if thats the case maybe Kirk should get hit by the bullet for Star Trek.

I read the same Hobbs, but before that I'd read that Abrams and some of the producers and such had a 3 hour lunch with the Shat which basically ended with him saying if he's reduced to a cameo, he's not prepared to do it.

I've read about 4 or 5 interviews with Shatner now and all tell a different story. All of JJs seem to be consistant, so I'm more inclined to believe JJs side, especially considering Shatners ego... Regardless, I'm glad he aint in it for the same reasons as Wiseguy...

I'm shocked at how polite and humble Abrams was. I always figured he was probably a bit of a jerk. But he answered that very diplomatically, and at his ego's own expense, and yet gave a real answer. Nice to see for once.

Woah, hold up, StarlightGuard. Star Trek V and seven seasons of Voyager, and yet Enterprise was the first time you ever hoped Trek would be cancelled? Yeah, I get that not everyone appreciated Enterprise for its awesomeness, but c'mon, man. Seven seasons of Voyager? That's messed up.

Anyone else worried that this is an odd-numbered Trek film? Though I suppose Nemesis already broke that rule by being a sucky even numbered one.

I like Voyager. I watch the reruns everyday.

Trek 5 was Shatner's fault. Trek 1 was a big blowout between Roddeberry and other forces. (Ever read Shatner's book "Movie Memories?" It's interesting to read.)

I'm not letting Voyager off the hook here, and I place the blame solely on Brannon Braga, who single handedly screwed up the consistency of the mythology. Most of that is with the Borg and Seven of Nine's parents, etc.

Voyager played it safe too much. And I still hate the episode "Threshold," where Paris "evolves" into that orange lizard thing and the Doc just happens to de-evolve him and Janeway.

Voyager had it's faults, don't get me wrong. And a lot of them are Braga's.

Also you should keep in mind I didn't start becoming a Trek fan until about a year or two before "Undiscovered Country" came out.

6 was the first one I saw in theaters.
