It looks like director J.J. Abrams is poised to return to the Star Trek universe he helped reboot back in 2009. After a few months silence following his Super 8 release---a period of time where Paramount quietly shifted G.I. Joe 2 into their summer 2012 line-up while moving Star Trek 2 into TBA status---the director has confirmed to Vulture that the Star Trek sequel is his next project. He also revealed that a script is expected to be turned in by the end of the month and that he hopes to begin shooting by this winter.

The report says the delay took place because they've been waiting on the next script from Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, with the latter writer also making his directorial debut on the DreamWorks release, Welcome to People.

The refreshed crew of the Enterprise is expected to make their returns, with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin all being previously confirmed for the next adventure.

No word yet on the new release date of Star Trek 2 but reports have suggested late 2012 or summer 2013.

Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

Great news.  Looking forward to hearing what the plot will be.

I, the Great And Powerful Jar Jar Abrams, have returned to further desecrate Trek by thinking it's something I either liked or created. Now, now, there's no need to thank me cause I already know how awesome I am at screwing this up.

I imagine it will be 2013.  Which is about the end of their 5 year journey into space.

Kara in 4...3...2...

Sorry Kara.  And I see StarlightGuard was quick to chime in as well.

All kidding aside, is this really news?  Figured they would wait for Abrams considering how well the movie performed.

And in other news, the earth rotates around the sun.

I liked the last one. Lots of fun and he did it in a way that didn't trash classic Trek. But, i have a feeling Abrams may drop te ball on this one. He wants Trek to be about action and adventure. The best Trek has always been about great stories with the kind of action that accentuates a great story.

I think he may go to far in Star Wars territory.

GREAT NEWS!!!! I have watched Trek (syndication first then TNG) since I was a boy. I loved the Abrams Trek, and am bvery much looking forward to his next installment.

I imagine Karas blacked out with rage when she read this but will be here shortly to register her displeasure ;)
