It looks like director J.J. Abrams is poised to return to the Star Trek universe he helped reboot back in 2009. After a few months silence following his Super 8 release---a period of time where Paramount quietly shifted G.I. Joe 2 into their summer 2012 line-up while moving Star Trek 2 into TBA status---the director has confirmed to Vulture that the Star Trek sequel is his next project. He also revealed that a script is expected to be turned in by the end of the month and that he hopes to begin shooting by this winter.
The report says the delay took place because they've been waiting on the next script from Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, with the latter writer also making his directorial debut on the DreamWorks release, Welcome to People.
The refreshed crew of the Enterprise is expected to make their returns, with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin all being previously confirmed for the next adventure.
No word yet on the new release date of Star Trek 2 but reports have suggested late 2012 or summer 2013.
