After doing some digging about a frequent rumor for STAR TREK, Robert Sanchez tried to get some confirmations on the possibility of Mike Vogel being cast for the role of Captain James T. Kirk in the next installment of the franchise. While Paramount and the actors own agency wouldn't confirm the casting, Rob has said that his agency did get a little nervous asking him where he got this bit of news. Two other studio insiders have confirmed as well that he is the top of the pack for the Kirk role. Actor Mike Vogel just wrapped up his role in 1-18-08, another film by the ST creators JJ Abrams and producer Bryan Burk.

Here's a clip of Mike Vogel in the 2005 movie Rumor Has It.

After watching that clip I want to stab myself in the god damn eyeballs.

I guess he looks like Kirk, sure. Acting wise it can't be too hard to find someone who's a better actor than Shatner.

Which episode of Friends is this? The acting is the same, but I can't seem to remember this one.

[Setting Phasers to kill.] Now don't be ditzing Shatner.

Hey don't bash on Shatner. His acting was the cornerstone of a HUGE GEEK legacy. I love KIRK
KKKKKIIIIIRRRRKKKK

Not bashing the guy, he won an emmy, (or a few emmies, not sure) but you have to admit the acting in the original series was laughable, from all of the cast.

Let's put it this way, you won't see Shatner giving a one man show on Broadway like Patrick Stewart.

"Awww Shat!" yeah whatever, I dont care. I really could care less about the recasts until I see the trailer and then I'll have a better Idea if they worked out or not.

"I' gettin too old for this Shat!" :o)

He looks and sounds like a shorter blonde version of Ashten Kutcher!!!

Give me Matt Damon instead...please!!!

I agree, MetalWater! Matt Damon would work fine for that role! I'm not sure I've ever seen this Mike Vogel. I never watched "Friends" and have never seen that version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. From the clip, he seems "ok", but I guess when it comes to acting, you can't do much worse than Shatner's Kirk in the original Star Trek series. Patrick Stewart he never will be or was! Kirk is no Picard. Picard will always be superior to Kirk in every way(except at getting the green ladies in bed!). I grew up with the original Star Trek(but favored watching Space: 1999, hence my name), and loved The Motion Picture and what I call the dualogy of Wrath of Kahn/Search for Spock movies. After that, they got either silly, or just plain bad until First Contact, which is, in my opinion, the best of ALL the Star Trek movies, since Kirk isn't in it!

Besides, I don't like the idea of this movie anyways. Just ANOTHER time-line screw-up and Star Trek has had WAY WAY WAY too many of them(even IF my favorite IS a time-line one). When done right, we get First Contact. When done wrong, we get The Voyage Home(absolutely stupid!). I wonder, is Generations a time-line film or not? I could never really pin it down to that.

Casting Zachary Quinto as Spock - BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!! Casting this guy as Kirk - Yawn.......... I was hoping the rumors of Matt Damon playing Kirk were true, I think he would do a great job and give this re-tooling of the franchise some instant cred, much like Patrick Stewart did for STNG. If JJ Abrams thinks this guy looks anything remotely like a young James T. Kirk then I guess we can look forward to Nick Cannon being cast as Dr. McCoy. Hey, why not just call it Star Trek: Star Date 90210. Thanks for killing my buzz for this movie.

I am willing to give this guy a shot if in fact the rumors are true. I'm willing to bet he took the gig as Rumor Has It for the paycheck and figured he'd get more roles after working with the likes of Jennifer Aniston. I am happy that Abrams still seems to be sticking with the idea of casting unknowns (I'm THRILLED that Matt Damon will not be Kirk - that would ruin the movie for me) and Vogel certainly is not a household name.
