Abrams Revolution to NBC

The Revolution will be televised

The Revolution will be televised.

Except for the characters on NBC’s new series Revolution, because they will have no electricity to watch TV after an apocalyptic disaster leaves America unplugged from all devices and machines. That’s right, there’s no cars, no cell phones, no Internet, no…actually, that sounds like it could be pretty relaxing. But we’re sure being stripped of technology will have some serious consequences for the show’s characters, who will be played by costars like Billy Burke (Twilight), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) and Andrea Roth (Ringer). J.J. Abrams (Lost) and Eric Kripke (Supernatural) will produce the project.

Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

That sounds interesting and inovative for once, will chek this out for sure.

Argh, this does sound interesting but it's like something I mentioned a long time ago on here. Except mine also has no modern weapons as well as the appearance of mythological beasts of lore.  Now if I ever get off (or on) my ass to write my outline out everybody will accuse me of ripping Abram's off.

Oh - and that picture kind of scares me. For some reason it screams Melrose Place.

Sigh... I like Abrams work for the most part and if I watched TV (I don't, but if its a good series I'll rent it/stream it later)  and I know that there are only so many threads of original ideas that can be mined. I'm fine with that as well. I enjoy when a new take is done on an old idea... BUT, I must draw the line when the derivative does not give proper credit for the original idea.

Specifically, the basis of this "apocalyptic disaster" event is virtually identical to the "Alien Bats" (google the reference) basis in author S.M. Stirlings 2004 "Emberverse" series (8 books and counting).

Here's the Wiki excerpt for Stirling's series, let me know when you see the similarities: "Emberverse, or Change World,[1] is a series of post-apocalyptic alternate history novels written by S. M. Stirling. The novels depict the events following "The Change", which caused electricity, guns, explosives, internal combustion engines, and steam power to stop working. "

Great series, strongly recommend... Ignore "The Revolution"

Sounds like it has been done repeatedly to death.  I will pass on it unless they can put together a great story around the apocalyptic future and a cast to knock it out of the park.

*rolls eyes*

American Punisher - how do you know he got that from there? It's a simple idea. Anybody can come up with it. You haven't sat down ever and wondered what the world would be like without electicity? Jesus Christ, I hate when people bitch about people stealing ideas like nobody could ever come up with similar themes on their own.

Hell, half of that crap you wrote in the last paragraph is what I talked about in my first box and I never even heard of Stirling let alone Emberverse.

You mean....

"No phone, no lights, no motorcars, not a single luxury.  Like Robinson Cruesoe, it's primitative as can be."

Not exactly an original idea, but in writing/storytelling, there really AREN'T any original ideas.  What matters is the presentation, not the hook.

That would bring the obesity rate down pretty fast, after half the population has heart attacks attemting to find food

Svaragog 5/9/2012 3:30:42 PM

Sounds like the Emberverse by S.M. Stirling. Basically the same idea. Read the first book twice, but didn't get much farther than that, going to wait until the entire series is complete.
