Abrams Talks TREK XI: Deal or No Deal?

Empire caught up with director J.J. Abrams, who talked with them about his involvement with STAR TREK XI.

The writer-director told them "The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation. People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."

Don't have it take place in the "past!" Move forward. After Nemesis. What's happening with the Federation and the Romulans? What's going on with the Dominion? The Klingons, Bajor, Cardassia. Bring in characters from all the series and make some new ones. There are so many better stories than "Kirk and Spock at the academy." Which, did that even happen? I'm not a big TOS fan, but is that where they met?

Move on period. The only reason that TNG worked was because people wanted more Star Trek. Let em foget all the bad Trek. I'm looking at you Voyager

Abrams could definitely bring something new to Trek, but I still think the whole trek universe on film and TV needs some beauty sleep...like about five years' worth.

I Used to look forward to star trek films, but nowthey lost their luster. But if something good is done, I might be into it. I read on msn.com, they had an article on 10 ways to save star trek and they had some great ideas,
1. Don't make it in the past.
2. Don't try to get some young actor to play Kirk or spock.
3. Don't fil it in Paramount Studios, they suggested London.
4. Don't make an academy movie.
5. Don't make a time travel movie.
6. Shell out the cash and do it right.

The Studio needs to take this advice and not throw more crap at us. I agree, if they are going to do make it after nemesis and shell out the money to do it right.

I would agree about not being thrilled about them doing a Kirk and Spock at the Academy film. Or really any film or series set at the Academy. I don't really want to see Star Trek 90210.

I too would like to see different characters that we haven't seen before, maybe just to freshen it up a little bit. But whatever they do I'll be inclined to be much more forgiving if they actually make a good movie. It's amazing how turning out a film that is actually good can make your audience forgive a lot of little mistakes.

Oh and just for my two cents..Please no Bajor. DS9 is my favorite of the Trek series' but I didn't like any of the episodes that centered on Bajor. Maybe if they had ever done anything other than whine it would have been different. Man..if I had been Sisko I would have ankled that planet.

Well, at least they didn't decide to do a movie about Kirk's parents conceiving him. Though it might be blasphemy, I'd love to see(hold on to your seats) a Federation Civil War. Man, could you imagine the Enterprise vs. the Titan. Or a small Task Force of Defiant-Class ships trying to take down Starbase. A Federation Civil War has been kind of a dark dream of mine.

Whatever they do and whoever they get, it won't work until people are ready for more Trek. As is evidenced by Nemesis and Enterprise, the people aren't ready yet. Give it time.

I think the reason that Trek needs a LONG vacation is simply that the only people that REALLY want to see it are the hard-core trek fans. I like Star Trek, I've watched the shows, seen all the movies, I love the intelligent storylines...the "high road" of sci fi" focusing more on characters than on space wars. Why put more money into a franchise that, though the universe is expansive and could certainily generate interesting stories, is fueled by a fan base and little else. With Star Wars, just about everyone wanted to see it (yeah, yeah, the prequels suck I know, I'm talking about demand, not the quality of the prequels) and so it made tons of money. Do I think people other than trekkies will go see a new star trek movie if done right? Of course. But I dont think that many will. And I also don't think that anyone other than devoted fans would ever think or wish that another trek movie will come out. I know it hurts to hear that Trek fans, but honestly, if they're not into Trek already, nobody cares. It's nice wishful thinking to think that a new movie will come out and revitalize the franchise and generate new fans, but most people don't feel like jumping in at film #10 and Trek, to it's credit, rarely "plays down" to the masses to overexplain itself.

I'm not overly thrilled with an Academy flick focusing on a young Kirk and Spock. However, the important thing is: No Rick Berman involvement. None. Yes, Rick Berman did work on TNG and TNG was a great series. However, his post TNG record is, frankly, awful. Voyager, Enterprise, and three inferior movies: Nemesis, Insurrection, Generations. Nemesis truly sucked, and Generations and particularly Insurrection, felt like TV movies more than feature films. I like to think First Contact was more luck than anything, or that Borg stories are the closest thing to a sure bet in Star Trek (though Voyager did their best to prove that notion wrong too.)

So, while these newer movies could still be subpar, I'm at least willing to give them a chance--they aren't guaranteed to stink, which would have been the case if Berman was overseeing the whole operation again. While not every bad thing in Star Trek over the last decade can be attributed to him, I think a great deal of it could have been avoided had Paramount gotten fresh producing talent sometime in the last 10 years.
