Abrams to Direct Star Wars Episode VII

A Day Long Remembered

By Robert T. Trate     January 24, 2013
Source: The Wrap - USA Today - Deadline

First Star Trek and now Star Wars? It seems as if J.J. Abrams will get the keys the Millennium Falcon after all. What does this mean for Star Trek? How will the two universe/ fan bases co-exist with the same director? Many would argue that Abrams already made a Star Wars movie with his rebirth of Star Trek in 2009. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves now... first the news.

USA Today and a Tribble loaded space freighter of other news sites are also reporting that Kathleen Kennedy courted Abrams heavily for the job. Deadline is reporting that “It’s done deal with J.J.,”.

J.J. Abrams will direct the next "Star Wars" film for Disney, taking stewardship of one of Hollywood's most iconic and lucrative film franchises”, an individual with knowledge of the production told The Wrap.

The screenplay for Episode VII is being written by Oscar winner Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine). This will be the first script not overseen by Star Wars creator George Lucas. Abrams will be the third director to helm a Star Wars film, George Lucas directed four of them. Abrams will  join Richard Marquand, who directed Return of the Jedi (1983), and Irvin Kershner helmed The Empire Strikes Back (1980).

We have our writer Maniacs and our director. Are you ready for 2015, the next summer of Star Wars?

The ST movie was a brainless, Star Wars flavored, action film dressed up as Star Trek.  Sinnce Abrams prefers Star Wars, maybe it will be better.  Then again, I don't want my Star Wars to be a brainless action flick either.  I'd like a few thought worthy concepts and ideas with my explosions and lens flares.

I am absolutely ok with with this.  I thought Star Trek was terrific and am looking forward to the sequel.  I thoroughly enjoyed Super 8.  IMO, no way he can do worse than Episodes I-III.  I never watched Lost, simply because that's not my bag, but I don't know of anything Abrams has done that was bad.

Daaaaaaamn!!! Still seems like getting the film in theaters by May of 2015 could be a bit tricky.

Great news.

And Kara, watch Super 8 and you will see that he can do movies with heart and passion and still use SFX with a good story.

Let's NOT go down that old argument againt of the new ST Vs the old...pleaaaaaase....

VTGamehendge 1/24/2013 9:28:40 PM

Yeah, Super 8 was awesome.

New ST was different but very well adapted into modern culture.  TDKR IMO has been the biggest personal upset.  Very excited for this just worried that maybe Abrams is involved with projects with similar themes that may inhibit creativity.  we shall see..
