This is great news, JJ has established a great body of work.  And to anyone that is hedging on this I ask only one question...........can JJ really do a worse job than Lucas did on Episodes I-II-III ?  And. as ElBaz13 reported, if JJ got the urging from Mr. Spielberg, then I have no problem with this whatsoever.  I'm just worried about Star Trek now.

Muenster is going to be pissed about this.........................

@ Kara, I think we all know how you feel about Star Trek, if someone doesn't by now then they just signed up on this site.  LOL !!

Have a great weekend.......................

HOLY CRAP!!!! He will do it proud. Abrams will have less influence and won't be able to make the massive changes like he did to Star Trek. There are WAY more cooks in the kitchen this time. Avengers was awesome and Disney only made Marvel better.

This blows my nerd/geek mind. The same director doing both Star Wars and Star Trek. WTF??!!!!????? O_O If you told me that even two months ago I would have died laughing. Now? I am just dumb founded. I feel weird saying this, but in Disney I trust!

Also, I LOVE Super8.  SUch a great movie.  If Star Wars is made with the same loving care that Super8 was made with then we are in the GREEN ZONE.

@axia

I'm with you on this one. If you would have said last summer "JJ Abrams will be directing a new Star Wars without Lucas "helping" out" People would think you're crazy.

I'm reading more and more of this on other sites and Abrams is a big Star Wars fan. He has included easter eggs in some of his work. There is a clip in Star Trek you see R2, very briefly. I'm beginning to wonder if he truly wanted to do a Star Wars film but Lucas had control of the Empire so he went to Star Trek as default.

Lots of Abrams Trek haters here. To each his own I guess. I didn't like Nolan's Batman or Singer's X-men universe so I guess I know how those diehard Trekkies feel.

Just an FYI. Matthew Vaughn was on the shortlist and almost got the gig. From what I read:

Well, apparently they went far enough that they talked about casting, and Vaughn pitched Chloe Moretz as the lead of the film.

This doesn’t confirm that Michael Arndt‘s screenplay will have a female lead, as much as it might suggest it. Vaughn is pretty hands on with screenplays and it’s just as likely, if not more so, that he had his own ideas for where a seventh episode of Star Wars should go. That might be where Moretz fit in – in a Vaughn-devised plot.

Or maybe Arndt really is writing up a female lead.

"Vaughn pitched Chloe Moretz as the lead of the film."

Yeah, I read that too. I would love to see her in the lead role of a Star Wars movie. Hit Girl was the best part of Kick Ass for me. She is a great actress and she would make an awesome Jedi. Her bring Luke's daughter would also be so very bad ass. If I was JJ Abrams I would pick her anyways and tip my hat to Vaughn. It is a damn great idea.

She is a fantastic actress for her age. Loved her in Hugo and Let Me In as well.

So are we going to see any Abrams regulars?  Will Greg Grunberg appear?  Josh Holloway can play a rogue/scoundrel type character.

I'm all for this!!! Yessss!!! There's NO WAY Episodes VII VIII and IX could be worse than I or II. They should be AT LEAST as good as III since ole George "I can't direct actors" Lucas isn't doing them!

Bring it ON!!!!!

To all the Abrams Star Trek haters....get over it. Star Trek was REBORN from the dying embers that were the last two TNG movies and horrible Enterprise TV show. So what Abrams did, even if not perfect, brough life back into a DEAD FRANCHISE, at that time. I have friends who HATED Star Trek, but now dig it thanks to this film! It spurred their interest in the "other" Star Trek's and now they enjoy them. Says a LOT for such a "crappy" film, huh????
