I like Abrams. I think he is a great director, too. I enjoyed the last Star Trek movie very much. But what hurt me about it is that strayed far away from the Roddenberry vision that made the franchise survive for almost 50 years. It was more a Starship Troopers sequel than Star Trek.

Abrams is a huge SW fan (like most of us) and it is one of the reasons he's in the film business now. I actually think he might be more suited to this than Trek. The only worry I have is he may be too much of a fanboy. Bryan Singer was a huge Donner Superman fan and got to live the fanboy wet dream to work on the franchise that enchanted him as a child. While there were many aspects of Superman Returns I liked I felt his fanboy adoration made his version too much of a tribute to his particular loves of the original than just trying to do a great movie.

Here's hoping Abrams keeps his inner fanboy in a cage and lets his inner director run free!

I am going to work with JJ very closely on this project, I'm thinking half the film will concentrate on a Jar Jar Binks back story then switch to the first Jedi Hutt, yeah that'll work. Jedi Jabba. Regardless of what its about it will smash records and toy sales.

Yeah but we haven't had a girl be the main lead in a SW film nemesis. And although I tend to agree with you the truth is the girl lead is hardly ever  the case but rather the exception

Having said that they know what audience these films attract and they tend to be of the Y chromosome so I'm sure they'll plan accordingly.

I actually would like a female lead in these new movies. Star Wars was way too much a "boys club" and the only female lead characters were Leia and Padme but they were less in the spotlight.

Plus, how many female jedi did we see anyhow? Just 2 or 3 with zero speaking parts.

Excellent News. Now please cast John Noble as the Villian!!!

we all know that women are simply not suited to combat. They could never really be good out their in the field. Nobody would ever give women -Jedi or not- any kind of...what?.......what's that?....

never mind

Elbaz-because even female Jedi, in the kitchen, they belong. Great and multiple cooking utensils, lightsabers make....

ElBaz, you thought DS9 had weak characters?  Were we watching the same show?  DS9 is my favorite of the Treks, mostly because I thought the characters were so different and exciting.

With TNG all the characters were Starfleet and while you had the occasional minor disagreement they were pretty homogenous.  But the characters on DS9 were very diverse and had many differing goals, needs and points of view.  It made the possibilities for stories so much greater.  With Starfleet officers and rampant capitalists, former terrorists and lost aliens, dabogirls, spies, religious leaders, and lots of folks passing through almost anything could happen.  And usually did.

I think DS9 is one of the best ensemble TV shows of any genre.

Compared to TOS, absolutely.

Did Benjamin Sisko beat the Kobayashi Maru?

I rest my case...

SW was absolutely heading the same way ST did.  It's a much bigger franchise and had much further to fall but don't fool yourself that it wasn't heading that way.
