Abrams Westworld for HBO

Based on Michael Crichton Novel

By Robert T. Trate     August 31, 2013
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

It seems as if there is no rest for J.J. Abrams. HBO has just committed to a pilot based on Michael Crichton 1973 film with the same name.

“In another example of the premium cable network buying a project from an outside studio, HBO has made a pilot production commitment for a Westworld adaptation from Warner Bros. TV. The drama effort, inspired by Michael Crichton's 1973 film of the same name, is being billed as a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.

Bad Robot's Bryan Burk will be producing the pilot along with veteran producer Jerry Weintraub. Jonathan Nolan will co-write and direct the pilot. This project is Bad Robot’s first series for HBO.

Here is the trailer for the original film.

I'm curious to see how you could make this into a continuing series. The basic moral of the movie was that the technology could go wrong and chaos can ensue (the same as Crichton's Jurassic Park), What will they do to keep it going for season after season?

Given the heinous things that humans do and what we've done to this planet I can't imagine how artificial intelligence could be any stranger or worse than real intelligence, although it might not be a hell of a lot better as the creators / programmers are so screwed up.    GIGO - garbage in garbage out.

This can mean only one thing, robot sex on HBO.  Finally!

It will be very complimentary to their vampire sex.

I find it ironic that Bad Robot will be making a show about bad robots.

From a production point of view this is a very economical move. HBO built some impressive sets, scene devices, and a warehouse full of props and costumes for the show Deadwood. This is not the first time a Westworld TV show has been attempted. There was poor attempt made back in 79/80. It was awful, as I suspect Abrams will be as well.

Expect lots of hype, viral marketing, stories with plots that never work themselves out, non-uniform acting techniques, poor casting choices, and cliffhangers that end up feeling like 11 hours of sex with no climax- leaving the viewer sticky, chaffed, bruised, and rubbed raw.

 fuck yeah...

 Hey Muenster!

I remember watching "Beyond Westworld" on TV when I was a kid. Looking back, it's probably horrible (and I think it only lasted about 6 episodes), but when I was a kid it blew my mind! LOL

Muenster 8/31/2013 9:54:50 PM

OK. Zilla. Was that "fuc& yeah" for 11 hours of sex without orgasm, or "fuc& yeah" for a new Westworld TV series?

Mellow, I saw the original movie at the drive-in with the folks and remember the years later aborted TV series as cheap looking. Thinking back it was most likely CBS's response to Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica.

Muenster: Yeah, you're probably right. It was from exactly that era.
The episode that sticks in my mind had something to do with the hero tracking a race car driver who had been replaced by an android duplicate.
