Can you feel it? The hype is already building. Star Trek and X-Men Origins: Wolverine are months away and already their trailers have hit the movie theaters and the internet. In a little over a month I will get to go to New York City and witness first hand what all the toy makers in the world will be pushing for the coming year. Hasbro, NECA, McFarlane, Mezco and countless others will be at the International Toy Fair. If you have ever been to the New York Comic Con just imagine two floors covered in toys. It is an awesome sight.

There are some retailers that already have pre-orders for variants and special/ limited edition figures. I checked out a couple of sites and picked out a few I thought you might be interested in.

If X-Men Origins: Wolverine is as badass as the trailer makes it look expect to see these action figures from May all the way through December. Sure there are already as many Wolverine figures as there are Batman and Spider-Man but what could a few more hurt? There will undoubtedly be a Wolverine figure for every outfit Hugh Jackman wears. Frankly, I think the fans will be more interested in Ryan Reynolds as Dead Pool, Liev Schreiber as Sabertooth and Taylor Kitsch as Gambit. If these three figures had limited editions available they would already be sold out. The Diamond Select Wolverine (see picture) stands at six inches in height and features over 14 points of articulation. He seems to play more to the kid crowd than the collector though. Hopefully there will be some Sideshow Collectible caliber likenesses of all of these characters. Look for Diamond Select’s Wolverine in late May.

Remember back in 1999 when everything had Star Wars on it? Queen Amidala was on a KFC box for heaven’s sake. There will probably be the same kind of overkill for Star Trek. This is a re-launch but it is also a return to the characters that started it all. Sure they are going to be played by different actors but that is still Kirk, Spock and Bones up there. Probably the best Captain Kirk I have seen in a long time is Diamond Select’s Ultimate Captain Kirk 1:4 Scale Figure (see header). Available in February he has a voice chip, stands 18 inches tall and comes with 25 points of articulation. It is as if someone took a Kirk MEGO doll and super sized him. Diamond Select doesn’t stop there with their new Star Trek figures. Kirk and Spock 2-pack from Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home will also arrive in time for the new movie. Spock is excellent but Kirk’s face seems so-so. If only Kirk came with a pizza. Commander Kruge and Maltz from Star Trek 3: The Search For Spock on the other hand are perfect renderings of Christopher Lloyd and John Larroquette. Another great shame is that Kruge doesn’t come with the big insect that tries to strangle him. Look for them sometime in January.

Star Wars figures are hit and miss nowadays. Every once in while one really grabs me and demands to be added to the collection. There are not many characters from the expanded universe that jump off the page and into my collection but after reading ”Noob” in Star Wars: Legacy by John Ostrander I got hooked. There was a “Band of Brothers” mentality going on here and it played perfectly for this new breed of Stormtroopers. Collectors should take note that this set includes the first female Stormtrooper action figure as well. I doubt I’ll ever pick up a Cade Skywalker figure but these guys are great and they build the troops up too. Available in April they are already up for pre-order on Entertainment Earth.

The Wolf Man will be our Gothic of Horror film for the summer of 2009. What I saw at Comic Con was crazy fun and got me really excited for the film (see SDCC Wolf Man). Mezco already released images of a medallion they will be doing for the film but I saw this tiny image on their main page (see picture). Could it be Benicio Del Toro as the Wolf Man in action figure form? I cannot wait to see this figure in person. If it is along the same lines as Mezco’s Hellboy figures it will not disappoint.

Mezco has been doing Jason Voorhees for quite some time now in their Cinema of Fear collection. Their 12 inch Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th Part 7 The New Blood made my top ten of the year. Like finding the Wolf Man tucked away on a header picture for the site I found what could be a new Jason Voorhees for the re-launch (set for February the 13th 2009). Only time will tell. Along with Jason appearing in their Cinema of Fear Leatherface is also a frequent character. This bad to the bone, covered in carnage, Leatherface marks a whole new figure for 2009.

Feel like there is something missing from the list? A certain movie set to premiere in March for example? The Watchmen action figures will soon be upon us. Hopefully there will be multiple runs of figures and variants. It is my hope that they make comic book likenesses of the characters as well. See my Watchmen action figure gallery from the New York Comic Con here and my San Diego Comic Con gallery here. All the Watchmen toys you’ll need.

RETRO Toy Commercial of the week:

Does anyone else remember Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future? Mattel not only delivered a great toy line but helped produce an awesome interactive series. Sure all you did was shoot at the screen and acquire pints or get blown out of your cock pit. The series on the other hand was a great post apocalyptic nightmare that dealt with Captain Power fighting the Evil Lord Dread for control of the planet. Is that Tom Lawrence (Chris Young) from PCU as the older kid?

At first glance I thought that was a figurine of Kirk giving the finger.

the Kirk action figure that is standing next to Spock (from star Trek 4) is not a very good likeness of Willam Shatner at all, bu i did manage to locate the Wolfman pics from the MEZCO website.... and I gotta say even though i'm not a collector of toys.. THAT is a bitchen werewolf!!!

I'll get a small picture up next week McKracken, but it will be the same one you found. Till toy fair (second week in FEB.) they (Mezco) are being tight lipped about releasing info and images (understandable toy fair is their big premiere). The Wolf Man already has a spot cleared away on toy shelf waiting.

Watchmen figures........Watchmen figures........Watchmen figures.........

Just the thought makes my wallet shudder.

That Wolverine figure is just plain terrible, nuff said. I do like the 1:4 scale Kirk though, he looks like an animated version. One can never have too many Star Wars figures (my psychiatrist disagrees but what does he know) so I'll probably add that Stormtrooper squad for kicks.

i have a whole slew of Watchmen figure/character pics from july 08 from the SDCC...they look really good

I still have practically all the Captain Power toys they made--including the giant mountain secret base (that I got on sale).*

I LOVED that show. J. Michael Straczynski worked on it, and there are references to Babylon 5.

It's just a shame that there were problems with the toys.

* I also have a swap meet knock off that uses the Captain Power logo, but looks like it was molded from a Judge Dredd figure.
