According to Variety, Adam Shankman (Hairspray) has signed on to direct the upcoming fantasy comedy, Bedtime Stories, for Walt Disney Pictures.

The film, based on a script from Matt Lopez, revolves around a harried architect whose life is turned upside down when the lavish bedtime stories he tells his niece and nephew begin to come true.

Shankman is also developing a live-action Aladdin film which is currently being written by Bill Kelly (Enchanted).

KJ's Take:  Movie sounds cute enough, it should be a solid film for fantasy loving parents to take their kids to without becoming mindlessly catatonic.  As for the live action Aladdin film, that's just a head scratcher.

A live action Aladdin...Hmmm, with the success of Pirates of the Caribbean. If done right, It could actually be very good. As for Bedtime Stories, I don't know...Jumanji, Zathura, and Night at The Museum worked on a similar fantastical concept. I guess people just don't get tired of it.

Kids films get a lot more leeway with regard to tired plot syndrome. Mainly because, well, kids don't care. They like cliche, simple, funny, standard plots. Go with what works.

Yep, kids can watch the same movie over and over until it drives their parents insane.

This does sound a lot like the Jumanji, Zathura, Night at the Museum sort of family movie that seems to becoming its own sort of subgenre. They're not great movies, but they are a lot of fun and have the same sort of no-limit imagination that kids have, which I think is part of their appeal.

A live-action Aladdin also has a lot of potential. We're about due for a retelling, it's been 15 years since Disney's animated version and decades since there's been a major live-action theatrical version.

"The Wedding Planner"?

"A Walk to Remember"?

"The Pacifier"?

"Cheaper by the Dozen 2"? (Ugh!)

The only thing he's done that was remotely entertaining was "Bringing Down the House".
