A-Kon - Manga Panel

By Chris Beveridge     June 02, 2000

OK all, please bear with me this is my first con report. Five of us were at
the panel since it was so late in the afternoon (5 p.m.). MegaZone may add
more comments later that I missed.

Macross Plus disc information:

A brief explanation was given at the panel as to why there were problems
with these discs in the first place for the 5.1 sound. Manga originally
ordered the English soundtrack in 5.1, but the company never told them until
after production that they took it upon themselves to change it. According to
Manga rep Keith, their explanation was "We thought it sounded better in 4.1"
instead of 5.1. Keith personally viewed the test disc himself, and didnt
notice the subtitling problem. He speculates that something must have happend
to change that when the other company worked on it.

Even though it is past the due date, Keith says Manga will still switch the
DVDs for the correct versions. (Keith handles the swaps personally.) In the
first week alone, Manga received 300 discs. So if many of you were waiting a
while for your discs, it is because they were on backorder and Manga was
waiting to receive more.

If you have any problems with your Macross Plus discs or want to know about
the status of your return, email Keith@manga.com

Patlabor Movie 1:

This disc will be on target for the 7/25 release. Get ready folks, lots of
extras are planned for this disc, and three easter eggs are planned.

Wings of Honneamise:

On target. Audio commentary track by two of the creators/directors(?) is
confirmed. Commentary will be subtitled.

X: The Movie:

Lots of people have been wondering why manga UK is releasing the disc
first. Well, they were initially the ones who got it first and are the ones
who produced the dubs. The DVD should be available on 10/20 in the US market.
When asked if the U.S. disc would have the same features as the U.K. release,
Keith replied a bit negatively. My speculation is that the U.S. release will
be created differently.

Rayearth OAVs:

The first VHS tape will come out on Aug 29. (I did not catch how many VHS
tapes there will be.)

The DVD should have all three volumes on one disc. Manga is aiming for before
the end of the year for this disc.

And you MKR fans should be relieved: Manga is *not* going to be using the
same voice actors for the dub as Media Blasters used for the TV series.

EVA movies:

According to the panelist, there are a few items in the contract with the
licensors that has to be nailed down before production begins. I did not hear
of an estimated release date.
