What They Say

The Review!
Since Harlock took command of Arcadia, the humanoids put a price on Harlock's head. Now, he's counting on his few allies Emeraldas (pirate woman) Tochirô and Tadashi and everyone in the universe who resists humanoids domination...
This DVD contains 8 episodes of Harlock.

Harlock was produced by Leiji Matsumoto, his drawing style is easily recognizable : blond thin women, heroes who suffer defending their ideas and boat-like spaceships. His first success was Space Cruiser Yamato (1974) followed by Harlock and Galaxy Express 999. Harlock 84 was not adapted from one of his book but is an original creation by Tôei Animation scenarists. It was broadcasted in Japan from 10/13/82 to 03/30/83 after the movie "the Arcadia of my youth". The series is 22 eps long. We could see it on TV in France in 1984 (that's what the name stands for !). Realisator was Tomoharu Katsumata (MISTER KATSUMATA if you please) because this great man has directed the most gorgeous series of his time : UFO Robot Grendizer, Captain Future, Space Cruiser Yamato, Harlock 84, Wingman. A great man....I told you :)

Before reading the technical review please consider that it's more 18 years old.

The audio is exceptional considering the age of the show. It's very clear and there is no background noise although the pitch is a little too high. I don't know where they get the Masters but they were well done. Of course it's mono only so turn off your surround speakers and your DTS receiver...

The video is technically identical to the audio : excellent. Although it's dark and lacks of depth. Animation is good for a '80 show.

Packaging is good, the front artwork is gorgeous and the back cover gives you all the information about the disc (including original staff). The case is transparent so inside's notes are directly written back to the cover. It includes chapters reviews and episodes summary.

The menu is well realized, but desperately too long, you have too wait 4 or 5 seconds until each options.

To sum up : whoa !!! It's a story about honor and pride, Mankind's battle against one enemy. It' well entertaining and takes you 10 years back in time. Unforgettable.
