Alex Proyas Updates on Adapting Dracula's YEAR ZERO

Director Alex Proyas certainly seems to be opening up to the media these days. A month after surprising online news by shooting down any involvement in Fox's Silver Surfer spin-off, due in part to Proyas being angry with the studio over issues with I, Robot, the director has talked to MTV on what to expect with his upcoming origin tale Dracula: Year Zero. For one, expect a realistic take on the blood sucker.

Draculas, and vampires in general, are known, of course, for some pretty unrealistic things: being able to transform into bats, for instance, or aversion to garlic, or a lack of a reflection in mirrors, or giant fangs.

“Oh, you’ve got to have teeth,” Proyas exclaimed. “I mean, the teeth are really important. I think Frank Langella in the ‘Dracula’ movie that was made in the 70s, I think he didn’t want to have teeth in the movie. But, no, I like the teeth. I want to see girls with a lot of teeth.”

Ok, so teeth are in. Garlic? “I think the garlic thing is kind of weird,” Proyas laughed.

“Stakes and teeth,” the director smiled. “And we’re lots and lots of blood!”

Look man, if you're pissed with Fox and decided to pass on Silver Surfer then I got your solution.
Why don't you head on down to Warner Bros and get yourself attached to Green Lantern. Make a kickass movie that will make tons of $$ and then go back to Fox and say "Fuck you, look what I could've done with Silver Surfer". Come on man, do Green Lantern!!!

On Dracula. I don't remember the rumored plot, but if it takes place prior to him becoming Dracula then it makes sense to make him more real. You gotta have him turn into a Bat though.

What, as opposed to the way vampires really are!?!

Yeah, I get his point. He wants to do a Dracula vampire story

that is more grounded in everyday reality. But it kind of comes across

as funny the way he stated it. It's already a fantasy creature he is

dealing with in the first place. It's like saying, "I want to do a

dragon movie without all those unrealistic things like flying and

breathing fire."

I hate having to go back and correct something on a previous comment on here. You always end up with the comment being spread out and bizarrely formated (as above) afterwords.

Proyas is the best. All other directors are living in his shadow. Dark City is the best Sci-Fi film of all time, and you see what my avatar is. Seriously, I will go see whatever he does based on his previous work.

Sorry, Im gushing a bit. I wonder if Alex has a date for the prom?

Monkeyfoot...I can always depend on you for the best in sarcasm...I totally agree with that. It's a vampire movie for crying out loud! I did enjoy Frank Langella's Dracula though...I own it, and thought it was pretty good.

Yeah, I agree, it's time to start seriously thinking about a Green Lantern Movie already...enough is enough...in fact, that should be made before another Superman Movie is made to whet the appetite, and to give WB/DC something else to concentrate on...we haven't had a really good superhero/space epic movie yet, and I think that the right film would make it ripe for those types of stories to be told...why not the Green Lantern setting things in motion?

Yes, with all the hoopla and debate about the Superman reboot, what got lost is the comments about moving forward with other DC projects. What about Green Lantern? Flash? Supermax? Dare I say it?.... Wonder Woman? If you are going to reboot Supes, whether I agree or not, fine. Leave it be. Let it lie for a few years. Learn from the Hulk reboot. Give it time to fade from the public eye before bringing the character back.

Fox is making a lot of enemies. It's starting to sound like NewLine except this time isn't money it's creative control.

hanso, I thought the rumor was Miller was been attached to Green Lantern. Though I wouldn't mind Proyas doing it.

fft, one report I read mentioned GL, WW, and Flash as being at different stages of development. For some reason it didn't list Capt.Marvel, I know that one supposedly had a script already or SuperMax.

OK, I'm starting to get sick and tired of this "realistic take" thing of late. I want my fictional characters to be fictional, I want the fantasy and everything that comes with it. I know TDK was a huge success but please, STOP IT!

hanso • Aug 28, 2008, 02:38pm •
Yea Wiseguy, that's the rumor but I'd rather have Proyas on it if it could be possible.

As far as the realistic take goes, they stripped Bond of all his gadgets, made it more real and that turned out badass. Something to think about.

This $#!+ is supposed to be about the first vampire and you want to make it grounded in reality? WTF? How exactly do you F***ing do that? What do you have his father have teh S3X with a vampire bat and nine months later BOOM? Seriously this is just F***ing stupid! Besides I want him to turn into a bat and fly and all that $#!+ That's what made him cool!
