March 21, 2002... Today's Variety reports that Independence Day helmer Roland Emmerich has got aliens on the brain once again. Emmerich is in talks to direct and produce Alien Prison for Columbia Pictures, which is about six humans who have been kidnapped and experimented upon by aliens light years away from Earth. After suffering years of abuse from their extraterrestrial captors, the six hatch a plan to escape so they can warn the Earth that a full-scale alien invasion is imminent.

Writer Andrew Marlowe (Air Force One, Hollow Man, End of Days) turned in the latest rewrite on the project which is what Variety says attracted the interest of Emmerich. Let's hope they change the title soon. [Source: Variety.]

July 3, 2003... Screenwriting duo Mike Werb and Michael Colleary (FACE/OFF) have been hired to perform a rewrite on the sci-fi/action project ALIEN PRISON. The movie is in development at Columbia Pictures, and the original draft was by Andrew Marlowe (END OF DAYS).

The premise of ALIEN PRISON is, well, it's an alien prison and humans are locked up inside it. Actually, it's a bit more like THE GREAT ESCAPE: the humans, who have been abducted by the extraterrestials to ascertain the physical/psychological limits of homo sapiens, find out their captors plan on invading the Earth. This leads the prisoners to hatch a plan to escape from their containment and get back to Earth to warn the world. In our sick minds this should be like ID4 meets HBO's OZ.

Columbia is hoping that the writers will be able to shape the next draft into the blueprint for a big-budget summer film. Let's hope they also come up with a jazzier title. [Variety.]
