When it comes to Sony's friendly neighborhood Spider-Man franchise, it's always a best bet to begin planning ahead for the sequels. That seems to be the case here, with the studio hiring James Vanderbilt to script out a sequel for The Amazing Spider-Man even if the first installment isn't due into theaters until July 3, 2012.

James Vanderbilt was also the writer who originally scripted out this latest reboot of the franchise before studio executives hired Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves to come in and polish the screenplay for director Marc Webb. Other credits for the writer includes: Zodiac, Darkness Falls and The Losers.

The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. As you've seen in the numerous set photos appearing online this past month, production is underway in order to swing the feature into 3D theaters by next July.

I guess if they start now, the sequel could be out in 2013 (if we have a 2013).

Well, ain't that a shocker. A potential sequel to Amazing Spider-Man. Who knew?

JarrodSarafin 3/25/2011 7:49:34 AM

I know, Krath. Color me shocked as well. If "Shock" was a color...

Calibur454 3/25/2011 7:50:49 AM

I have no desire to see this without some type of trailer for the first one but this is no big surprise after all it is hollywood style

violator14 3/25/2011 9:40:56 AM

Spider Man is amazing.

avidfan 3/25/2011 11:27:44 AM

I don't know if I forgot or just didn't care but who is the villian?

CaptAmerica04 3/25/2011 11:29:08 AM

Spider-Man is spectacular, too.  Or... he used to be.

If "shock" was in the crayon box... it would be Jarrod.

So.........a guy who needed some help from the big-gun writing of Steve Kloves (every harry potter film) is already being hired to do the sequel?  His resume looks like shit covered crap, sorry to anyone who liked any of those under-achievers but just wtf is going on with this franchise?  At least Sam Raimi had loads of street cred and respect when he got the original gig, it was like everyone who knew him collectively cheered FINALLY, but this Mark Webb has a mediocre little indy film and gets the job?  And now they give the writing job to this hack?  Color me officially concerned...........if concerned were a color.

This slightly smacks of a certain mid-90's directorial change involving a very popular superhero and an openly gay director.......who got a sequel..........and..........fukk.........

This could be a good thing. If they already have a writer for the second movie maybe they won't cram everything into one movie. Maybe have time to develop some characters maybe a trilogy or something.

Man after Spidey 3 I'd think everyone would be down for a new Spidey, I am.

No one knows how Webb's film will turn out, I'm optimistic. And it did work out well for Favreau when he was plucked to do IronMan.

Oh and this writer is for the sequel, meaning a couple of years to do re-writes or to get new writers if they don't like his work. This wouldn't be the first time that's happened, heck that's probably the norm.

@avidfan, going by the reports that have been put out there it appears that it will be the Lizard and maybe the Proto-Goblin but the latter may just be setting-up to be the main baddie in the sequel
