The adventure will star Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. Director Marc Webb led the production for Sony, based on a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves.

The best commentary on this film came with both Garfield and Stone on SNL.  Andy Samberg dangles upsided down in a Spidey suit sans mask.  Stone asks "Didn't you do this bit already with Kirstin Dunst?"  Samberg replies "Didn't you make the same movie ten years ago?"

I agree it's a bit early for a revamp of Spiderman. But after Spidey 3, I don't think the studio had any other choice. Sony needs a cash cow, so they went back to good old Spidey. I have to say I'm kind of looking forward to this interpetation of Spiderman. Nothing against Raimi's series but I wasn't the biggest fan of it. Especially 3.

While I'm a sucker for comicbook movies, I have to say I'm not real excited about this one. I'm not a fan of the guy they picked to play spidey. Emma Stone as gwen?
When I saw the trailer, it reminded me of twighlight.  Nothing we need more than to bring spidey down to the level of a tween movie!  Hopefully it will be good, but we won't know till sumer.

I HATE that I'm not looking forward to this movie.

Am I the only one who thinks this dude is in dire need of a haircut?

I have to echo some thoughts here. I'm not hating on this film, but I'm just not excited about it at all. I think Garfield is a good actor, but I just don't see him as Spidey. Stone is good too, but nothing about this film is grabbing my attention like I was hoping.

So I too would like to add my two sense...when I sawthe first trailer, I thought "meh, could go either way."  However, everything that I've seen Andrew Garfield in has impressed me so far.  Secondly (and perhaps most importantly) I saw the footage that they screened at SDCC this summer and holy shi-ite it is amazing.  I never was sold on Tobey as either Peter Parker or Spidey, but there's a scene in which a mugger supposedly has the drop on Garfield's Spidey, at which point he gets both is hands webbed to a wall whilst Spiderman is cracking the requisite jokes...for my money, he nailed the part in that scene.  Whereas Raimi's Spiderman was an homage to the old-school comic books, this new one breathes new light and believability to the character (and no it's not darkness for darkness sakes ala Dark Knight, and it certainly isn't Twilight).  Recommended movies: 500 Days of Summer (Marc Webb), Social Network and Never Let Me Go (Andrew Garfield)...end rant

Hey @DriveShaft if you're right and the script does actually have Spidey running his mouth all the time like he does in the comic, I might change my mind about seeing this.  That's always been my biggest complaint about the Raimi treatments.  I hope you're right.

I am boycotting this movie and encouraging anyone else that will listen to do the same.  There is no reason at all to "reboot" this franchise so soon - it's pathetic.

Wyldstaar 11/21/2011 4:26:03 PM

mac2j- there are actually several reasons that the Spider-Man movie franchise is being rebooted so quickly.

The first is scrictly monetary as one might expect.  Sony is a publicly traded company.  As such, it has a contractual obligation to it's shareholders to wring every ounce of profit from it's products as possible in order to make good on the shareholder's investment in the company.

The second is that the Sam Raimi films weren't worth continuing as an ongoing storyline.  The characters as they were established were pretty dull when they weren't fighting or breaking into a song and dance routine.  We'd already seen Spider-Man save MJ from a villain/villains who learned his true identity three times in a row.  Did you really want to see it happen a fourth time?  Raimi was not only going to do that yet again, but he wanted to put even more musical numbers in his fourth installment than were in the third.  This was the sticking point which caused Sony to fire him, and rightly so.

Third, no movie director really wants to take over where someone else left off.  A director might do so for a quick paycheck, but it's not what they prefer.  They want to create their own take on the story, with their own take on the characters.  A reboot gives the new director the opportunity to do that.  If Tobey McGuire were to suddenly start a non-stop taunting spree of his foes during their fight scenes, it would seem out of character, because he never did that in the previous films.  With a reboot, nobody questions it.  It's just the new status quo.
