AMERICAN EMPIRE: THE VICTORIOUS OPPOSITION

The latest from the master of alternate history

By Chris Wyatt     August 11, 2003

Harry Turtledove has one hell of an imagination, and one hell of a grasp on human nature. His current novel THE VICTORIOUS OPPOSITION, which is another in a series of books about alternative events in post-Civil War America, is a rich tapestry of "what ifs".

The book, set in an America where the Confederacy is independent, describes a conspiracy to create a holocaust against blacks in Alabama, events surrounding the 1936 Olympics in Richmond, Virginia, and the incursions of Canadian terrorists.

Turtledove's style is as smooth as ever, even when he's packing in tons of detail. He also has the rare ability to tell broad sweeping stories, while still focusing on very personal events.

THE VICTORIOUS OPPOSITION might not be right for newcomers to alternative history, or even newcomers to Turtledove, but it is a solid novelone of the author's best in years and it can be recommended to all fans.
