A year after purchasing the rights from director John Landis, Dimension Films is moving forward with their planned remake of An American Werewolf in London. And it seems they've found the writer they want to task with such a howling (and hairy) job. The Los Angeles Times is reporting the studio has tapped screenwriter Fernley Phillips (The Number 23) with the duties to flesh out a revision of the 1981 cult-classic in hopes of showing off the same mixture of humor and horror but with a modern twist.

As the newszine reports “Werewolf” isn’t the first '80s genre comedy getting the remake treatment. DreamWorks is remaking the vampire comedy Fright Night while Paramount is developing a new Teen Wolf. Dimension itself is trying to stay in the game with a new Scream film from Wes Craven set for next April.

Can Landis' classic be topped? Sound off below.

They should just keep going to other cities and not remake it.

(sigh)..........this is getting old.........Hollywood sucks! They just can't leave well enough alone.

Yep...another classic destroyed by a remake.

Ok doesn't have to be remade at all, but worse yet why pay a writer at all.  If you are going to REMAKE it why not just use the old script?  What was wrong with it?

I was just talking about American Werewolf In London I'm okay with the remake just don't screw it up like they did with Paris...that film is just bad...I watched Fright Night the other day, and that movie is still funny

Agree with just about everybody here: Why!?! The things that made the first a hit were the most cutting edge make-up FX and the shocking horror colliding with humor. It was original and unique. Now this is done all the time. All they can do is take Michael Cera or a teen hearthrob actor and use CG FX to do something that is done quite often now.

Why not just come up with your own new werewolf story with its own unique ideas and twists and make your own classic horror flick?

this is just wrong in so many ways.

I agree with monkeyfoot make your own werewolf story.

I'm with Dazzler.  No need to redo the original when a sequel has already established the concept of a sequel going to another city. That being said, I'm not automatically 100% against a remake in this case.  At least the movie is 29 years old, and has outdated f/x. Granted, they were state-of-the-art at the time, but are extremely old now. There's definite room for improvement there. And while I agree that the original is a great movie, it's not a universally beloved classic where a remake feels like they're raping my childhood.  I'd still prefer an original story, but I've come not to expect that from Hollywood any more.

OK here is my beef, WTF is with all the werewolf references today? They all end up looking like over sized dogs. A werewolf is supposed to be part man part wolf, not a guy that turns into a full grown wolf. The original at least had that right, it was a huge misshapen wolf like creature. The best were wolf film ever in my opinion was the Howling.

I just hate the examples from The Gates, Twilight, true Blood and all the other posers.
