America's Next Muppet Idol Makeover Survivor?

By: News Editor

Disney and ABC are looking to bring the Muppets in a prime time series that would spoof such unscripted shows as American Idol and America's Next Top Model.

Though the show is still in the very early stages of development ABC has ordered a pilot script and five additional script outlines for America's Next Muppet. Kermit's team will look to find a new Muppet to join the likes of Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, the Swedish Chef, Scooter, Rowlf, Janice, Dr. Teeth, Animal, and others.

If done correctly, this could be brilliant. Anyone from my generation loves the original Muppet Show. And while the ill-fated 90s muppet show didn't work well in today's tv, I thought it was still very entertaining. Perhaps as a satire of shows like American Idol, the old variety-show format from the 70s show can work again and find a new audience. Hope for the best!

Henson Productions did a great job with the show Farscape. I would expect some pretty decent things from them. I would definitely check this out.

'Muppets of OZ' was a mixed bag- except for the half expected throw-away gagline from Kermit to the Wizard: "any relation to Frank Oz?" LOL!

I miss the Muppets but would rather see them in the theaters... actually I take that back, both concurantly... that would be nice.

Oh my... if this has an ounce of the jibes and pot shots they used to make at the industry on the original muppet show this could be sheer brilliance. If not... and they are serious... it will most likely be pure garbage.

this does seem like a difficult format to pull off, i think that only the Muppets COULD do it and be successful!

...wait!!!! I can see it now... the two old guys in the box suite tossing jibes.

Old Guy One, "What do you call that performance?"
Old Guy Two, "Stuffy!!!"
HAW HAW HAW
Kirmet, looking upwards, shakes his head in dismay.

That would be totally cool!

I'm a huge fan of the old-school Muppets (anyone been to Disneyland and/or Walt Disney World and seen the Muppet*Vision 3-D film? Not to mention the pre-show and all? Freaking brilliant) but some of their more recent projects have left me cold. Muppets in Space was really not that good. Having said that, I will definitely check this one out.
