Animated HULK Series Arrives on DVD

By: Columnist
Date: Wednesday, May 14, 2008

While researching my column, “Precursors” back in April I came across two titles that I thought needed further research. The first and soon to be released is the long awaited Hulk animated series from 1966. The Hulk was one of five cartoons released by Marvel in the Sixties. Captain America, The Mighty Thor, Sub-Mariner and Iron Man were the others. The catch is the Hulk animated series is only being released in the United Kingdom making it a region 2 DVD. So where does that leave us fans of the big green guy? There are of course two options. The first being a region free DVD player. The price of which has gone down since Blu-Ray players were introduced, a good purchase for all DVD aficionados. The other option is a DVD region decoder. To find one of these one must simply turn to the internet.

On June 9, 2008 Liberation Entertainment will release for the first time ever all 39 episodes of the Hulk on two discs. This is to coincide with the release of the Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton and Tim Roth.

Here is a complete list of the episodes:

Origin of the Hulk / Enter the Gorgon / To Be A Man / The Terror Of The Toadmen / Bruce Banner Wanted For Treason / Hulk Runs Amok / A Titan Rides The Train / The Horde Of Humanoids / Hulk On The Rampage / The Power Of Dr. Banner / Where Strides The Behemoth / Back From The Dead / Micro-Monsters / The Lair Of The Leader / To Live Again / Brawn Against Brain / Captured At Last / Enter…The Chameleon / Within This Monster Dwells A Man / Another World, Another Foe / The Wisdom Of The Watcher / The Space Phantom / Sting Of The Wasp / Exit The Hulk / Hulk Vs. Metal Master / The Master Tests His Metal / Mind Over Metal / The Ringmaster / Captive Of The Circus / The Grand Finale / Enter Tyrannus / Beauty And The Beast / They Dwell In The Depths / Terror Of The T-Gun / I…Against A World / Bruce Banner Is The Hulk / A Man Called Boomerang / The Hulk Intervenes / Less Than Monster, More than Man

If you are too young to remember the series or have never seen it here is clip from YouTube:

There were two titles that I mentioned I came across and the other is one that has long escaped a DVD release in the United States. With three Spider-Man films in the bag one would think that this title would have been released long ago. Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends season one will on DVD August 25, 2008. However, it will only be released in the United Kingdom. Liberation Entertainment has a huge catalogue of Marvel titles at their disposal including Spider-Woman, Silver Surfer and The Fantastic Four. They do not have US distribution rights but Amazon UK will get Maniacs pass that. There is an additional cost for shipping but it is a small price to pay for these titles whose quality will outshine pirated VHS DVD transfers or downloads off of Ted Turner’s Boomerang channel.

Nice to see that all those theme songs are able to stand the test of time. I have to say that the Hulk's is my favorite, followed by Capt. America's.

It's bull$&$* that it's over there region 2. Should have been released here years ago. I want X-men also from the 90's. And I think it's double USD over there also which also sucks. Guess I can wait for them to be put on ebay.

I'd like the Hulk, Spider-Man, Iron Man (Force Works), and the X-Men from the 90's more than that. Though it is crap to only have it sent to the UK. Way to drop the ball Marvel

I have such fond memories of all those Marvel Superhero cartoons. Poorly animated from the original comic book illustrations, they hold a special place in my heart even the much better made superhero cartoons of today can't fill. EvilMonkey you are right. Obviously there is something to those catchy theme songs that are alot better than the ones on more recent animated shows. Too bad they aren't available in America. I'll have to make do with the crappy youtube copies.

monkeyfoot, you said it. These cartoons were the thrill of my day back then. I didn't even care about the animation, the theme songs and just being able to watch these guys on tv was a treat like no other. I often mention how those cartoons pretty much introduced me to Marvel and is probably the reason I love Marvel so much. Can't believe they're not being released over here.

I'd like to know who has the distribution rights here in the States. They need to get on the ball. You can't tell me there are more potential customers in the UK than here.

Don't be to harsh on Marvle noblenonsense. Marvel doesn't own the distribution rights in the U.S. to any of it's animated works before the Spider-Man MTV series. ALL U.S. distribution rights for Marvel animated material from the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's with the exception of the Hanna-Barberra Fantastic Four material is owned by Disney right now. A fact that Marvel is seriously regretting right now... and if I'm not mistaken there is some litigation between Marvel and Disney because they are pissed that Disney has not released these gems and is therefore causing Marvel to loose money to the bootleggers. That being said for Region 1 DVD animated goodness just go to Amazon Canada and they have some of the Marvel stuff from the 1980's.

Disney??? Those bastards.
spanishyoda, do you know if those distribution rights are perpetual or are someday going to revert to Marvel?
