Anime Expo - Closing Ceremonies

By Andrew Tei     July 06, 2003

Mini-report by David Kapp / Cthulhu

After what seemed like a very short span of time, the closing ceremonies of AX 2003 had come. Since the charity auction went over on time by almost an hour, both the awards ceremony and the closing ceremonies were delayed considerably.

First came the "we had a good year speech," and then the winners of some contests were announced, including the winners of the AX Idol contest. I didn't go to the idol contest, so those results didn?t mean a whole lot to me. The winners of the anime music video contest were announced as well, and the winning comedy video "Chibi Things That Kill" was played for everyone. It was very cute and quite funny too. Awards were given out for the Masquerade and art contest too. Next came the charity total: $74,020! This amount includes donations taken in the dealers room and proceeds from the charity auction.

The guests of honor were then called up to give their closing remarks. Not all of them were present, as a few had things they had to do, but most of the guests made it. One of the guests was late because she spent too much time at Disneyland. yoshitoshi ABe was recognized as the character designer of Lain when he purchased something at an Apple products store when he paid with his credit card, which greatly surprised him. Yao Kazuki was really worked up, and said that he would not only come back to AX next year, but he would bring some new Bastard!! Anime with him! He said that he was sure to be yelled at back at the office for saying that though... we'll see if the new anime makes it back to us next year. I?m looking forward to it if it does, of course!

Finally, Yuki Kajiura filled in the second eye of the daruma, and AX 2003 was declared to be a success. Indeed, despite the lack of big announcements, it was indeed a fun con. I'll certainly try to go again next year!
