Anime Expo - Dark Horse Panel

By Sakura Eries     July 05, 2008

By Ron Quezon

The Dark Horse Anime Expo Industry Panel took place on July 4, 2008 at 1pm. The panel comprised of Editor Carl Horn, Director of Asian Licensing Michael Gombos, Director of Publicity Jeremy Atkins, and Editorial Assistant Samantha Robertson.

Carl passed around copies of Clover volumes 1-4, and production prints of Blood+. Please note: CLOVER #4 was taken from the Dark Horse Industry Panel.
Whoever took it please return it immediately to the Dark Horse booth in the AX dealer room. Dark Horse just wants their copy back and will accept this as a simple mistake. This is a copy used in production and not getting it back will impact future cons and passing out audience copies to review.

This is the 20th anniversary of Dark Horse and Yoshitaka Amano, creator of the Vampire Hunter D series, created this 20th year logo for Dark Horse. At their AX booth, Dark Horse is giving away free copies of this poster, with lists of their titles on the back. At San Diego Comic Con Dark Horse will be selling an exclusive high quality version of this poster at their booth. Also only at San Diego Comic Con, Dark Horse will be selling a limited edition yellow Domo figurine available to the first 250 customers at their booth.

Dark Horse will release Clover in one omnibus edition, made up of volumes 1-4, in March of 2009. This edition will contain digitally remastered portions by Clamp. Carl talked about the schedule of Dark Horse releases and before Q&A mentioned two titles they recently have taken on:

  • Late Spring/ Early Summer 2009: Shinji Ikari Raising Project
  • December 2008: Banya The Explosive Delivery Man (Volume 1 of this Korean Manhwa will be available online in December on the Dark Horse website for free viewing)

Carl outlined portions of the Dark Horse release schedule as:

  • July 7, 2008: Blood+ Volume 2
  • July 7, 2008: Style School Volume 1
  • July 23, 2008: Berserk Volume 24
  • August 12, 2008: Vampire Hunter D Volume 10
  • August 13, 2008: Blood+ Volume 3
  • August 20, 2008: Appleseed Volume 3 rerelease
  • August 22, 2008: Ghost Talker's Daydream Volume 1
  • August 27, 2008: A Wind Named Amnesia and Invader Summer
  • September 3, 2008: MPD Psycho Volume 6
  • September 3, 2008: The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service Volume 7
  • September 10, 2008: Astro Boy combined release of Volumes 1&2
  • September 17, 2008: Empowered Volume 4
  • September 17, 2008: Path of the Assassin
  • September 24, 2008: Gantz Volume 2
  • September 24, 2008: Berserk Volume 25
  • October 8, 2008: Ghost Talker's Daydream Volume 2
  • October 15, 2008: Vampire Hunter D Volume 11
  • October 22, 2008: Hellsing Volume 9
  • October 29, 2008: Style School Volume 3
  • November 19, 2008: Vampire Hunter D Volume 12
  • November 19, 2008: Appleseed Volume 4

The folks Dark Horse folks then took Q&A for about 45 minutes. A couple notable questions were:

Q: Can you tell us about the Clamp Mangettes?

A: Michael - There will be some arts, plot summaries. Dark Horse won't be saying much at San Diego Comic Con, but look on the website in later 2008.

Q: Why will Astro Boy be released as an omnibus edition?

A: Samantha - There is a wait and see approach on Volumes 1&2. This will be the original look, no extras. Dark Horse will see what the sales are like, then will look at the rest of the release schedule.

The last of the Q&A went until 2:20pm, and then Dark Horse concluded the panel.
