Anime Expo - Del Rey Panel Report

By Sakura Eries     July 03, 2006

Del Rey held an industry panel on July 3, 2006. The panel consisted of Director of Manga Dallas Middaugh, Director of Licensing Mutsumi Miyazaki, and Publishing Associate Tricia Narwani. The new titles that they announced and their release dates are as follows:

Airgear and Q ko-chan: the Earth Invader Girl will be released at the end of July 2006.

Suzuka will be released August 29, 2006.

Tsubasa Character Guide will be released on December 26, 2006. This guide will cover the characters introduced in the first six volumes of the manga.

Train Man (Densha Otoko) will be released on November 8, 2006. This is the Kondansha single volume shojo manga version of the story.

Gacha Gacha the Next Revolution will be released on December 26, 2006. This is actually Vol 6 of the Gatcha Gacha series. However, between Vol 5 and Vol 6 of Gatcha Gacha, there is a significant change to the story line, which shifts the rating from 16+ to Mature. As such, Del Rey has decided to release all the volumes subsequent to Vol 5 as a separate title.

Kouga Ninja Scrolls, the novel that the manga Basilisk is based on will be released at the beginning of next year. Del Rey is making plans to release other manga related novels also and will announce the titles they have acquired in the next few months.

The three volume series Free Collars Kingdom will be released at the end of January.

Genshiken Vol 6 will be published with the bonus doujinshi that was included in the original Japanese release.

Del Rey is the process of acquiring two OELs and will announce these titles in the next few months.

During the question and answer session, an attendee commented that the print quality of Del Rey manga has gone down over time as she has had problems in three books from three separate Del Rey titles. Del Rey had been unaware of those problems and thought that their production quality had actually gone up over time. Dallas Middaugh stated that if anyone is experiencing print quality problems with their books Del Rey would appreciate them sending an email to or posting a thread at to alert them of these problems.
