Wow, what a surprise. What seemed as just another routine "get to know the
people from Japan!" session, the Newtype Magazine Panel delivers the goods.
What's the good?
US Edition of Newtype Magazine!
That's right, English language Newtype.
It'll be handled by Digital Manga, as the head of the company (didn't catch
his name) spent a year negotiating with Kadokawa Shoten. The Chief Editor of
Newtype (again didn't catch his name...) and Kunihiko Ikuhara (Sailormoon,
Utena) were present at the panel.
Here are some info that they wanted to keep confidential for now because
everything's still at planning stage and further rights need to be negotiated.
- Coming out spring 2002
- Content will be most up to date and will match Japanese issues as close as
possible
- Shooting for 20% US info, 10% Europe info and 70% direct from Tokyo
- Monthly
- 150 or so pages
- Novel and manga serials (For the Barrel, Five Star Story, etc.) in the
magazine will most likely not be included because of licensing issues. If they
can't get them, they might include alternatives. And if they do get them, the
serials will be put out from the beginning.
- Some other Japanese specific content will be taken out (TV schedule,
etc.)
- They'll try to retain the size of the magazine (nice and wide) but it
could well be regular sized because the retailers don't like odd sized mags.
That's all I can remember. No pricing was announced.
