Anime Review: SEKIREI

After learning that he failed to get into a university again, Minato Sahashi contemplates where his life is going and if he will ever succeed at anything. He hardly has a chance to get depressed since he hears a cry from above and sees a busty young woman hurling through the sky towards him. After she lands right on top of him, Minato and her begin a whirlwind race through the city as two other busty ladies also with apparent super human powers, are hell bent on sparring with his new lady friend, Musubi. After they escape the two trouble making women, Minato and Musubi arrive at Minato’s apartment where Musubi’s professor speaks to Minato through his television and informs him that he is an Ashikabi, a man born with the genetic trait to make him a compatible partner with a Sekirei, a member of the warrior-like buxom women like Musubi. Sekirei seek Ashikabi, since partnering with them allows them to attain their full powers. Learning of this new “gift” coupled with the threat to his life by the mysterious MBI should he ignore his new status, Minato is both scared and excited to see what his new life with Musubi will take him.

Sekirei provides plenty of ecchi humor as whenever Musubi is confronted in battle, her blouses are ripped to expose her enormous breasts and she undresses in front of Minato without realizing that she is disobeying proper etiquette. Musubi is innocent in nature and fits the shy while flirty bombshell character typical of this genre of anime. Minato, also somewhat stereotypical, is nerdy and lacks confidence but finds himself attracted to the wildness Musubi has brought into his dull life. The show has potential to outgrow the typical harem profile, so hopefully the next few episodes will deliver just that.
