January 10, 2009
There’s a whole lot of anime coming out in the next year and the solicitations for the first quarter are pretty much in with a few hints of what’s beyond. With lots of collections on the way, new high def releases and more, here’s what’s rising to the top of our lists!
Hayate the Combat Butler –
A 52 episode series, it never gets old which is a major accomplishment. It combines just about every type of humor used in anime - slapstick, exaggeration, romantic hi-jinks, misunderstandings, parodies, fourth-wall-breaking, a snarky narrator - with a very likable cast of characters that change along the way and a light plot to make a great comedy with heart.
The latest entry from the VisualArts/Key library with animation by Kyoto Animation is coming from Sentai Filmworks much to fans joy. With lush animation and very character centric stories, it’s one that will definitely please fans of shows like Kanon and Air.
An exciting detective-psychological-thriller for adults, the manga has finished its run in the US and a live action movie is in the works. Viz Media’s anime adaptation should hit in 2009 with seventy-five episodes worth of material Naoki Urusawa has a lot in the works for US release in various forms and this is one of the big ones.
Evangelion 1.01: You Are (Not) Alone –
The first of four theatrical retellings of the classic storyline that continues to be a mover and shaker in the anime world should hit in 2009 and that will bring in new fans and old fans and likely start up quite a few debates once again!
Gundam 00 –
With a strong as following as ever, a second season riding high in Japan and some of the most alluring character designs of any Gundam series, this is one that will have many fans eagerly awaiting its release, especially after its airings on the Sci-Fi Channel.
