I'd much rather have it on Blu-ray as well, but I may ultimately have to accept DVD. Since importing the series would be quite expensive and when it comes to importing, I'm focused on other things.
Speaking of which, I wonder if I should just give in and start up a certain series or keep waiting a bit longer. Well, waiting would be cheaper, but....

Utena at Nozomi is the dream team.
I know it's a small announcement, but I'm happy that they're remastering the video for Wanderers, I'll buy it now.
Don't know about the other show, but I'm sure I'll get it anyways.
A couple things not mentioned yet...
- The anime publisher has plans to extend its line of lithograph art prints – which currently includes art from ARIA The NATURAL, CLANNAD and The IRRESPONSIBLE CAPTAIN TYLOR – with a potential second lithographs (to-be-determined by fan vote) for Clannad and ARIA, as well as a new print featuring art from the fan-favorite series AZUMANGA DAIOH.
- Right Stuf and Nozomi Entertainment have licensed both original and anime series artwork to MusicSkins, which produces protective coverings for phone, MP3, laptop, iPad, video game and other portable devices. Designs featuring artwork from the ARIA anime series, plus the original works Ninja Crossing and Crane Inspiration, are now available at www.musicskins.com (http://www.musicskins.com/) and will soon be available via the RightStuf.com storefront.

The amount of sheer, insane awesomeness TRSI/Nozomi is capable of is just beyond absurd.
Now, I already am buying the JP BDs of Sora no Woto and don't intend to stop. And there's no guarantee Nozomi will do a BD (unless we get updated info in the time it takes me to post this...). So as absofuckingloutely fantastic as it is that such an amazing show is going to the best R1 licensor possible, I don't particularly need to double dip.
But I will. Because it's Nozomi. And they actually deserve it.
And Utena? I'm not kidding when I say that is literally the one and only R1 back-catalog title that 1) I don't own and 2) have never seen but 3) would buy. And Nozomi just grabbed it. Seriously?
I mean, holy shit, Nozomi.
You just don't give anyone else in R1 a chance to compete (although NISA has appropriate potential).
Edit: okay yeah DVD on Sora no Woto... So I really shouldn't double dip, but still will anyway.

Interesting Utena has english audio included. I'm sure it's the CPM dub, which I kinda didn't like.... woulda liked a new dub, but it's no biggie.
Still not sure I'm double dipping on this. If it was Bluray yes, but dvd... eh.
I don't like the answer of as prices come down we'll start getting in to the BR game, that just makes me think I should hold off on Utena at least... not buying it 3 times. Cuz I liked it but I'm not in love with it that much.

Time for the big announcement. Nozomi has licensed Sora no Woto.
That. Is. Awesome. Definitely picking that one up. I do think it's a shame that they seem to be indicating that it's DVD-only, (that series looked freaking gorgeous in HD...) but I'm not that picky. Besides, I don't even have a region-free BluRay-player, so there's no guarantee I'd even be able to watch a BluRay-release even if they did provide one. And seeing how I've heard pretty much nothing but good things about Nozomi, (except the lack of a dub, which doesn't bother me at all) I'm glad they were the ones to pick it up.

Personal feelings aside, I can't ignore the fact that Utena being rescued is big news. Especially since it's a more meaningful rescue. People are getting better video quality and it's supposedly a hard to find series. Well, it won't be any longer once they release it.

Mark me down as a probable Utena and Sora no Woto buyer.
Right on Rightstuf!!
In my opinion, some of the license announcements from 2009 were relatively weak compared to the previous lineup of Aria, Emma and Maria-sama, but Utena and So-Ra-No-Wo-To give the brand a solid push back into the realm of high-quality cult-classic anime specialist, in my mind at least.
May have to double-dip on Utena if the product is remastered and high quality.
PRO TIP: Dig out a copy of the old CPM Utena DVDs, take a look at how poorly conceived and difficult to use their menus were, and do something completely different with the new release. You'd almost have my pre-order just for that.

The subs on CR were just fine really, so unless Nozomi plans another subs-with-honorifics-(and-the-like) track like the beautiful one they have on Marimite, I'd actually strongly prefer they just leave CR's. The default track on Marimite kinda hurts me.

Nozomi/Right Stuf really hit it out of the ballpark with their panel announcements: Sora no Woto (never thought they would get that one), Utena (period; and remastered at that), and El Hazard (of what I saw, good show). Good collection news too, though they were mentioned earlier.
I thought SnW would go elsewhere, even BEI, but it's nice to see them get an Aniplex series. Utena, though, is the big one, and very welcomed given the muddy status on its license. The remastered video is the icing on the cake, and so great to hear for such a beautiful, deserving show. Certainly a title Nozomi/RS will be pushing hard in the coming months.
It's good to see some parity again in the North American anime industry, however much & long it will last (BEI - K-ON!, Sentai - HSotD, Nozomi/RS - SnW).

I'm still a little uncertain on double-dipping on Utena. I actually only have two of the three old box sets from CPM (one of them unfortunately got stolen...), so if I wanted to actually have the whole series again, this will probably be a great option since I don't doubt Nozomi's release will be much higher quality than CPM's anyway. I never really felt Utena was one of my absolute favorites, though, so I don't know if I care strongly enough. Chances are I'll be prioritizing other things.
As expected, a very informative panel coming from TRSI / Nozomi...
REVOLUTIONARY GIRL UTENA - I'm sure I will double dip. I didn't like it as much first time going through. However I'm willing to give a second try.
SORA NO WOTO - I have heard of this. I know I will be picking this up.
EL-HAZARD: THE WANDERERS DVD Collection getting video grade - This will equate to double dip now
GRAVITATION Complete DVD Collection with audio upgrade - I have the thinpak and the OVA already. It's a good series, but I probably won't be double dipping on this.
ANTIQUE BAKERY DVD Collection is currently scheduled for early 2011 - Delays happen. I always appreciate when reason(s) are given for delays. I will still be getting this.
Potential 2nd Lithogrpahs for Clannad and ARIA - This interest me though it may depend on what gets picked.
...as a new print featuring art from the fan-favorite series AZUMANGA DAIOH - I will chalk this one up as a maybe.
...original and anime series artwork to MusicSkins, which produces protective coverings for phone, MP3, laptop, iPad, video game and other portable devices. - I don't think this is something that is for me.
All in all a great panel. :)

Holy crap, Nozomi. Sora no woto AND what is only the most wanted rescue of all time, Utena. Wow.
Both are definite buys for me. I reeeeeeally want the BDs for Sora no woto, but for Nozomi, I'll make an exception and buy the DVDs if that's all they have. I didn't import it, so double dipping for BDs later wouldn't be a huge deal. I never bought the earlier Utena TV releases anyway, and even if I did, there are a number of reasons that Nozomi's release will be vastly better.
Looks like its going to be time for an Utena R1 thread in late 2011 or early 2012.

There are underlying elements of yuri/yaoi throughout the series, but I think that partly due to the element of sexual frustration and confusion on the part of nearly every character in the series. Makes sense since all the characters are teens after all and one of the generally understood interpretations of the series is an awakening from child to adult (or adolescence as you would). While this element exists, I don't believe these form the entire majority of the show like some others in the yuri/yaoi genre.
I would recommend checking the first set out (either rent or borrow from friend) and see if the elements are too strong for your tastes. It is a great series, because it was one of the first where I had to stop and begin interpreting hidden meanings and looking out for motifs scattered throughout.
Added: Oh yea, and please bring over the Utena OSTs. I recall we did not get all of the soundtracks in the US, plus I remember hearing that they released new remastered or remixed CDs around the time Utena got its remastered DVDs. Here's hoping anyways.

Sora no Woto, huh? Well, good for those who wanted it and it's certainly a surprise to see Nozomi get a uber-recent title for once, but it does nothing for me personally.
Oh, what's this? Utena got license rescued? Well, it's certainly no Ring ni Kakero 1-esque way of owing me back for the Dirty Pair trickery, but I'll certainly bite on that. I did enjoy the first 7 episodes I watched from the first set CPM released, so I'll definitely replace it and go for Nozomi's release instead, but it won't be super-high priority right now.

I'm a sucker for pretty much any Azumanga merchandise.
Utena license is fantastic. When they got Super Gals season 1 I felt very strongly that was a good indication Nozomi licensing Utena speculation as being one of DLK's hints would actually pan out. I always regretted not getting CPM's discs, so I'll definitely be getting these sets.
Sora no woto sounds like something I would like, but I'm really disappointed they lack the capacity to do a blu-ray, so it's unlikely i'll get this dvd. Oh, and from the trailer/opening, it looks like they might have gone back and changed the logo from the Software Sculptors/CPM release. Didn't the original just add an English translation next to the original Japanese titles?

I'm missing pieces of the tv series (so I can't speak definitively), but its not - its a tournament fighter set at a boarding school, with religious/European fairy tale overtones. Think Maria Watches Over Us, but with the Shaman King (or maybe Pretear) plotline, and hints of Fruits Basket.

Time for the big announcement. Nozomi has licensed Sora no Woto.
That is absolutely excellent news. I wasn't expecting Nozomi to get this series but I am pleased that they have done so. This is an automatic pre-order/buy as soon as available for me.

And Utena? I'm not kidding when I say that is literally the one and only R1 back-catalog title that 1) I don't own and 2) have never seen but 3) would buy. And Nozomi just grabbed it. Seriously?
UTENA DISCUSSION THREAD!
Guaranteed.
I look forward to seeing your thoughts, along with those of all of the other first-time viewers, on this amazing series. ^_^ You haven't been _completely_ spoiled, I hope.

Haven't been spoiled at all, or rather any spoilers I've seen were devoid of content so hell if I had any idea what I was seeing.
I did watch the movie, but it was years ago, and all I remember (for obvious reasons) is the final scene.

Oh, and from the trailer/opening, it looks like they might have gone back and changed the logo from the Software Sculptors/CPM release. Didn't the original just add an English translation next to the original Japanese titles?
They often replace the logo in the trailers, and leave the show alone.
But we'll have to wait and see for sure.

Its really hard to actually spoil Utena.
If for no other reason than its always even weirder than any possible description.

Utena! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Between this an Funi announcing the rest of Hellsing Ultimate and the Trigun movie, I literally got all 3 of my top wanted licences in one hit.
I'll be preording Utena as soon as it's listed... and I'm tempted to send TRSI a box of Tim Tams in appreciation... :P

Time for the big announcement. Nozomi has licensed Sora no Woto.
Given the fact that this show was released on BD in Japan, I will not be purchasing the show until it is release on BD here in the US.
To cover any inquiries about blu-ray for Soranowoto and Utena (or any other TRSI titles for that matter), not at this point.
16:04:12 <bay|AX|TRSI> Q; Expanding to blu-ray?
16:04:20 <bay|AX|TRSI> A: It's not as near cool as my laser disc...
16:04:28 <bay|AX|TRSI> I agree with you, I'd like more stuff out on bluray
16:04:41 <bay|AX|TRSI> as prices on the production of blu-ray come down, i anticipate we will move into it
I understand the reasoning, Nozomi is a small company compared to say FUNi, however, this statement is the same BS that old-ADV gave us when asked about BD 3 years ago. The old "We'll see how it goes" bullshit. Look, either get with the BD program or say it'll be several more years before ya man up and do it. This waffling crap pisses me off to no end (more so in the early morning before the caffeine kicks in :sd: ). I find it inexcusable that a HD release in JP is given a lower quality release here than in Japan. And I am in no way excusing the boneheads in Japan who don't want to give up the HD/BD rights for a release in the US because of reverse importation fears. I don't care how many "extras" are thrown in or how pretty the art is on the box. The simply fact remains, the core product, the show, is sub-par quality to what is available.
Isn't this the same logic & reasoning that has given us the sub-only releases here? The cost of producing the dub is higher than the money we'd get back?
Don't get me wrong, I think Nozomi puts out some of the best releases in terms of packaging and content. I did buy the ARIA releases from Nozomi, since it was originally done in SD, I've no problem with purchasing the DVD.
Sorry for the rant. Like I said, I get the business decision, but the reason they gave is still weak. It looks like this release is going to be a Netflix only viewing.
Oh well, time to go to get some breakfast and then Best Buy to check out the under $20 BDs.

I will take what I can get. Which will probably make me poorer in the long run. I have to watch an episode or 2 of Sora no Woto before I even decide whether I am interested. As much as I love slice of life shows about cute girls, some do it better than others. Is this one of the better ones?
The poor picture quality on the DVD release and some later episodes seemingly dragging too much put me off to the first 2 seasons of Hidamari Sketch. Considering jumping back in once the 3rd season is released here though.

I'll be picking up the new Utena as well, and it'll basically be a first time for me.
Very awesome about Sora no Woto! Not as big as K-ON! for me, but it's still a day one buy from me. It's a little disappointing that it's not going to be on BD initially, but if they release it sometime down the line, and I enjoy the show as much as I think I will, then I won't even blink twice about double dipping. :)
Time to go read the FUNi thread.

Soranowoto is much more story oriented than slice-of-life/comedy oriented, compared to Hidamari Sketch. Although it does have that element, I wouldn't say "slice-of-life" is really it's predominant genre.
I could ramble on about how better Soranowoto is all day. But I'll leave that for the thesis I'm writing, about how the show uses and subverts moe archetypes to serve the show's themes.
Isn't this the same logic & reasoning that has given us the sub-only releases here? The cost of producing the dub is higher than the money we'd get back?
As much as you might dislike it, that reasoning is sound.

As much as you might dislike it, that reasoning is sound.
Given that Section 23 and, now, Aniplex, are doing more dubs, you would have to forgive someone if they believed otherwise.
Regarding a Soranowoto, if they couldn't get the rights to HD materials, that's one thing. However, if they could, there is no harm in going old school and opening up a pre-order program to gauge interest in a Blu Ray version like they did for DVD box sets years ago. The results may surprise them.
I mean, even Sentai is aiming for day and date BR releases. O.o

Yes I'd love it if they opened a bluray preorder for both shows to gauge interest! I mean these shows aren't gonna come out for a little while anyway. The question is did Rightstuf get the BR rights? I'd assume they would to future proof the license, but ya never know.
If the preorder didn't reach the limited needed then they could cancel the order.

17:14:45 <bay|AX|ProIG> Press people don't write it...
17:15:17 <bay|AX|ProIG> Is it okay Shawne? DLK: It's okay...

Ha ha, from the bits and pieces of that feed it almost seems like DLK appeared out of nowhere once the guy goofed on the announcement.
If I'm double dipping on the TV sets, I mind as well do the same with the movie now. It's kind of a funny turn of events of an accidental license. It did make me wonder when this was supposed to be licensed. I don't think they would have waited until the next AX.

They haven't been at Otakon in years. I want to say 2004 or 2005 was the last time.

You were very close. According to ANN, it's 2006.
While reading the "Massive Geneon Properties Rescued" threadI remembered that Rightsuf have just announced El Hazard TV...
Give that there are a few big holes in the Funimation list, I wonder if Rightstuf have more Geneon titles to announce in the near future?
El Hazard (original OAV), Battle Athletes (#1 on my wish list), Master Keaton?

I think Niea_7 would be a good Geneon rescue for Nozomi. I doubt Funi or Sentai will pick it up and it seems like something that would fit in their catalog.

I'm not sure if I'll get these or not. Judging from RightStuf's trailer, Utena looks kinda like a yuri series, and I avoid yuri/yaoi like the plague. And Sora no Woto being sub-only pushes it pretty far down on my "to buy" list, but I'll probably get it eventually, if I can get it for a good price.
I have heard many good things about this show, so I'll at least give the first set a chance. Thanks
Avoid the movie though. Lots of yuri even though that wasn't really the main point of it (never did get the main point of the movie, it still confuses me.
