Only looking for one particular announcement:
Evangelion 2.22: You Can [Not] Advance

(although a One Piece: Strong World announcement would also rock my socks off)

It would probably have to be Sailor Moon to have a chance at topping K-On!.

Actually, if anyone licensed Macross Frontiers it would blow K-On!! out of the water (but I'm not a fan of K-On!! to begin with so take this with a grain of salt) :catgirl:

Having the voice actors for Ranka Lee and Sheryl Nome at AX 2010 is the biggest anime cocktease ever if Macross Frontier doesn't get announced.

With all of the red tape and drama that is attached to that franchise in North America (thanks, Harmony Gold!), anyone being able to license Macross Frontier would be the biggest news EVER.

Strictly speaking, they have Sheryl's singing voice, but not her Seiyuu.

In order of most wanted:

1. Evangelion 2.22
2. One Piece movies
3. xxxHolic Kei/OVAs
4. rest of D. Gray-man
5. Basquash

Miracles that would rock but I doubt will happen:

-Higurashi Kai, Shakugan no Shana S2, Nanoha Strikers
-Cardcaptor Sakura license rescue

Other than that, nothing really. FUNi's already assured us the remainder of Eden of the East and Spice and Wolf, and since I don't watch fansubs really anymore (and most of those I've heard about and intrigued me are already licensed), there's not too much on my license wish-list anymore. So I'll just wait and if a series I've never heard about gets licensed and I like the sound of it, just a pleasant surprise for me.

While I would love to see Eva licensed, I thought they were already outed by Manga UK? It would still be great to get a confirmation though. And I'll second the notion of wanting the One Piece movies. I'm hoping to hell it's Strong World, but I'd be happy to own any others besides the Alabasta movie.

No.. Manga are waiting on a dub so they can release it, and Jerome just assumed it would be coming from FUNi like the first movie.
Summer Wars on the other hand.. yeah.

I'm hoping Sailor Moon is their big announcement tonight. It would certainly be "big", and fans have been begging for it (hi!).

The only other series I could think of that could get the industry's attention would be Macross Frontier, and that's because it's licensing would mark the end/a workaround for the infamous Harmony Gold license ordeal. Otherwise, it's comparatively niche.

Or maybe they'll announce both and we can all get drunk tonight.

Well hey Sentai has Gintama and that was 200 ep's. And rember they did send CaD's to fansub groups, they have also licensed anime's on CR. And no Reborn has not made that far. And dont forget they have One Piece and that that been airing since 1999.

My question would be, do they want to pay another long series dub? In contrary of Gintama which is release sub only. Also, would FUNi want to have another long series now that they have One Piece?

So we have High School of the Dead (dubbed), K-on (possible dub and BD), and Railgun, Hellsing V-VII and Black Lagoon 3. I'd say whatever big surprise Funimation has up their sleeve is icing on the cake at this point. A very positive AX this year.

Now, for Hellsing, I hope they can get the original voice actors since its been so long since they last worked on this series. It shouldn't be too hard for Crispman Freeman to reprise his role, but from what I remember, the voice actresses for Seras, Anderson and Sir Integra are not normally voice actors (or at least for anime series). I'm hoping there won't be a problem getting them back in the studio.

unclee
07-02-2010, 05:23 PM
Well since Funimation has a pretty strict policy of only licensing shows they plan to dub, I think it's safe to say that Hellsing, Black Lagoon and Railgun will all be getting dubs (despite the uncertainty from the Geneon panel).

The only real question now is will Hellsing and Black Lagoon retain the original dub cast? While they could maybe get away with changing some of the cast from BL, Hellsing without Crispin Freeman just wouldn't be the same.

I don't think they'll have a problem since they got the original Hellsing voice cast to do Ultimate, and there were some years between those two releases.

In that situation you have to remember one thing: both of those series were licensed by Geneon, who was (is? Now that they say they're "back") based on the west coast. Funimation is based in Texas. That's the reason why there is a question mark regarding the original cast.

I believe that was Geneon that did that, Funimation simply took the completed project and released it. As far as I know, this will be Funimation's first stab at the production of Hellsing. But somebody should probably check me on that.

Yes, but I believe the big concern is that Funimation usually dubs their own releases. They should be able to get Crispin Freeman, but will the rest be willing to travel and if not, will Funi be willing to outsource the dub.

They also were able to reunite most of the cast for Tenchi 3rd OAV. I don't doubt Funi will make the attempts to get the cast, but will the cast be able to come back. Lots of things always happen (money disputes, timing of work, desire to work on this, retirement, etc). Here's hoping for the best. I do find it one of the stronger dubs I have listened too.

In addition, Taliesin Jaffe has a strong relationship with Funimation having dubbed in Fort Worth before. Unless something out of the blue happens, the same dub cast is returning.

Yeah, Zac from ANN said the same as well. (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=941438#941438) It's just the logical thing for Funi to do. Some people just worry too much.

So Funimation licensed Railgun but not Index? This is really big shame here. Mainly because both Index and Railgun suppose to tie in together, so it would make sense if you grab both. Although they want us to be surprised if they mention the Index series.

I'm guessing because Misaka Mikoto is more popular than Touma.

Hold your horses - has any actually asked them about Index? I mean, Railgun came up because Geneon talked about it at their panel. The only stuff they mentioned at that panel are "ongoing concerns" - that is, shows presently being released on DVD/BR in Japan or that are soon to be/soon to air. Index is an "older" show now, and as such wasn't mentioned.

I'd wait until after the Funimation panel before making statements about what they have and haven't got like that.

So Funimation licensed Railgun but not Index? This is really big shame here. Mainly because both Index and Railgun suppose to tie in together, so it would make sense if you grab both. Although they want us to be surprised if they mention the Index series.

It would not surprise me if Funimation was also trying for Index as well, but for whatever reason Railgun got announced first. Well, only time will tell.

I would much rather see them grab something new, then picking the pockets of Geneon's corpse. :P

Same here. Honestly if the "more stuff" is just them telling us about how they dug up some graves, I'll have waited for nothing.

Not that I have any expectations that Funimation will announce anything on my list. Still who knows? Maybe they'll be supportive of female art students as well. Yes, I already know the answer to that....

If they do announce more Geneon rescues I'm hoping for Tenchi OVAs 1&2. I have Volume 1 but the rest are pretty expensive, even used copies, so I've been holding out, hoping for a rescue.

The main protagonist in To Aru Majutsu no Index. You know, they guy where his right hand can negate magic and esper powers but also negates his luck (meaning everyday is a bad day for Touma).

But I really want to see the Index series licensed and dubbed.

It's time to get this panel started. We already know some of Funi's licenses as they were given through Twitter (Hellsing Ultimate 5-7, Black Lagoon, and Railgun). Let's see what else is going on. And bayoab is commenting on how massive this line is and it's heavily staffed for a panel.

There's always a chance for Funimation to deliver. Although based on my own personal bias, it's Bandai that has the lead. Regardless, Funimation doesn't need to win. They only need to announce a title or two of interest to me.

Other than that, though, I am happy that Shana, Hellsing, and Black Lagoon got their continuations licensed, for those who wanted them. I'm kind of interested in Shana at least though I never tried it. The second season not being in limbo any longer has got my interest a little higher.

Lame.

Didn't they mentioned earlier this year that they weren't interested in the second season of Big Windup because the first season sold like shit? Damn shame too - sports anime needs more support here and I though Big Windup was pretty good.

It's just that it seems natural that Funi would get it. They licensed the first season, they're purposefully expanding into simulcasts/streaming. The fact that they didn't portends to me some other sort of problem, like the 1st season selling poorly on DVD or AIC being stubborn with the license.

It could just be that FUNimation only got season 1 because Gonzo practically gives them licenses, and AIC doesn't. We'll see next week if Crunchyroll gets it, though, since they're in a similar situation with Gonzo.

Time for announcements. First up are rescues for Texhnolyze, Ai Yori Aoshi, Haibane Renmei, Hellsing TV, Lain, Tenchi in Tokyo, Tenchi Universe, and everything else Tenchi Muyo.

New licenses are Shana season 2, Railgun, Index, Black Lagoon, and the Trigun movie.

Not too shabby. I missed out on Lain and Haibane Renmei the first time around, so I'll grab those. Maybe Ai Yori Aoshi as well. As for the new stuff, Black Lagoon and the Trigun movie are a given for me; I'll probably grab Index and Railgun too. Shana is sitting on my backlog pile, so season two is pending me unearthing it. Same for Darker than Black, now that I think about it.

Woo for new stuff!

EDIT: Hellfire and dalmatians, I forgot about Dance in the Vampire Bund. Since it will be unedited, I'll be picking that up too.

Well, its nice to have a confident, positive answer on the Dance in the Vampire Bund issue... but I'm still going to wait until its actually out before buying it.

I really would have preferred to see someone else license Magical Index and Railgun, but this isn't exactly a surprising acquisition. They are both among the more widely marketable anime in recent years, so its not surprising that Funi would want them. So unless Funi really pissed me off, I'll be getting them. Well, as long as they get BD releases, but at this point, there's no reason to expect they won't since Funi seems to release BDs for everything that has BD releases in Japan.

I'll wait and see on Shakugan no Shana S2 and the OVAs. I'll probably get them, but I'll have to wait and see. I'm not sure how much I care about Hellsing Ultimate at this point. There's still a decent chance I'll get it at some point, but I care a lot less than I used to. I already own most of the Geneon re-licenses and don't care about the one or two I don't own. As for Darker Than Black 2, I'm leaning towards no for the time being. It's partly due to issues with the show itself (the ending leaves a bad taste, needs sequel badly) and Funi not getting the home video episodes that are on the actual R2 discs doesn't help. They'll need to really to impress me to get me to buy it.... which is unlikely. As I've said before, its several years too late for me to care about the Trigun movie.

I am, however, very interested in the Black Lagoon OVA. It's the title I'm the most interested in after Railgun and Index. Again, I would have liked to see it licensed by other companies, but again, its not terribly shocking Funi would want this. This is also a rare case where I actually care about the dub, as I watched the dub version of the DVDs and really liked it. So I really want Funi to just contract out the dub so it can be dubbed by the same cast and studio as the first two seasons. And there is precedent for them doing this (FMP:TSR), so there's at least a slight chance it will happen, though I'm assuming Funi will dub it themselves until I hear otherwise. I'll buy it either way, but I'm very interested in how they will handle that.

I really don't care about their streaming announcements, since I hate their video player.

Man funimation calm down. This is way too much stuff. We don't need to crowd the market

They really didn't crowd much of anything up. Franchise-wise, most of what they announced were either rescues of previously-released titles (Geneon's), continuations of current ones (Trigun, DtB, BL, HU, Shana), or simulcasts of the second seasons to shows they already have (Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler, Sekirei) or were part of the noitaminA agreement (L-A Moyashimon, Shiki). The only purely new properties they got were Index & Railgun and Legend of Legendary Heroes (simulcast). Most of what they got was either already on the market in the past or just extentions of what is already there now, physically or digitally.

IMO, good licenses they announced, and nice to see Legendary Heroes, Texhnolyze, and Hellsing (TV) among them and a possibly good theater appearence for the Trigun movie. No Eva 2.0 is really disappointing, but all in due time, I suppose.

I already own most of the Geneon rescues, and the Texhnolyze bundle is only $40 at Right Stuf (http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/OscWq6ro3eq2cH7auW/browse/item/88476/4/0/0).

Other than that, I'm happy about the continuations (particularly the Hellsing and Black Lagoon OVAs), and have been waiting for To Aru to show up on this side of the Pacific.

As long as they use Fathom Events and not go with that wierd arthouse distro that they did with Eva 1.0 I'll be happy.

Licensing that much at once is still amazing, especially since there were some big names in there. It's nice that they licensed the Trigun movie and that its getting a theater run, but I'm assuming that won't be in any more American theaters than Eva 1.0 was, so that doesn't do anything for me. I'm still waiting for Eva 2.0.

Funi actually failed to beat Nozomi's announcement of Utena for me today.

Out of everything Funi announced, these interest me:

Shiki simulcast definitely. Likely live action Moyashimon too just for the hell of it.

Lain, Haibane Renmei, and Texhnolyze. I own the Geneon DVDs but I would definitely double dip for Lain on Blu-ray and likely Haibane and Texhnolyze too.

New licenses were disappointing. I'll check out the Trigun movie. No announcements for Eva 2.22 or Summer Wars sucks though.

Now that Funimation has picked up Haibane Renmei, Texhonlyze, Lain., etc. (and previously FLCL), maybe it's time for me to flip my original sets for as much as possible. ;)

Wow, this is a large list to go over! Let's see, not inlcluding the simlucasts right now:
Darker Than BLACK 2: Nothing for me as I never saw Season 1
Shana 2: Didn't see Season 1 fully, but I won't discount it fully
Index & Railgun: Same as Shana
Black Lagoon OVA: Never saw any of it, so nothing for me
Hellsing Ultimate 5-7: Still have to get the first 4 OVAs, but these do catch my interest
Trigun: Badlands Rumble: Yeah, got my interest
Texhnolyze: A strong "maybe"
Ai Yori Aoshi: Doing nothing for me
Armitage III: Same as Aoshi
Haibane Renmei: Would have been a strong "maybe"... If I didn't already get the Geneon singles for about $3 each from a record store a few months back
Hellsing TV: More than likely will buy, as I did enjoy watching it
Lain: Same as Renmei
Tenchi, Tenchi, Tenchi: Nothing really for me

In the end, these licenses really were more of an "attack with numbers" strategy than anything, but it got my interest with a few titles, so I'd say that it worked. Really, this is probably the only way to possibly "please everyone" in reality: Announce so much stuff at once that everyone has to be interested in at least one title.

Well played, FUNi... Well played.

With all these great licenses, my wallet will sure be suffering very soon.
It's Funimation, maybe not so soon... :P
I would not be surprised if they are announcing dates for some of them next AX.

A pretty good amount of licenses announced and I'll definitely be looking forward to A Certain Scientific Railgun and more Hellsing Ultimate. Still... I'm fairly disappointed that Evangelion 2.22 still hasn't been picked up yet, most of the Geneon relicenses I already have (unless titles like Haibane Renmai and Tenchi Muyo in Love get BD releases), and FUNi's about a decade late as far as me caring about the Trigun movie. :relief:

A good showing by FUNi, but in the end Nozomi is my darling of this year's Expo, thanks to their Utena remastered and Sora No Woto announcements. :)

This may be an odd metaphor, but anime licensing is like the combat system in Duel Monsters. The person who's show has the highest "Attack Power" (personal love for the show) automatically beats everyone else, no matter how many shows the opposing side has.

I guess I'm just not that impressed with the bulkiness of the announcements, since much of it isn't really that "new" in my eyes, just continuations and rescues. Not that that demeans FUNimation or anything, but it's not that overwhelming in the big picture, like releasing another volume or season set of something.
