Took a flyer on this manga during last TRSI Yen Press studio sale.

Have read first three volumes. Like. Good but not great. Still fun.

But I'm getting a Rumiko Takahashi disease vibe. First three volumes fairly meandering. Up to volume 8 in Japan. Could go on and on and on. Try not to buy manga series that go past 10 volumes. Unless insanely great. Otherwise, too hard on shelf space and re-read value.

Does anybody have any idea of how many volumes will Tena go before it wraps things up?

I've only read the first volume myself. It's decent enough that I have plans to order more volumes in the future.

For the record, I have no idea how long the series is planned for. I tend to assume there are no plans to end a given manga until such time I see a story along the lines of

"_________ has confirmed that the very next volume of X will be the final volume of the series".

Understood. But I was hoping for some sort of hint or ballpark figure. Like this author interview for Enchanter:

Archived Entry - 07/03/2006: "Interview with Izumi Kawachi, creator of "Enchanter"" :
GM: How many more of this manga title do you think there'll be?

IK: I'm hoping it will be about 20 volumes.

With 8 tanks out in Japan, if the manga is going to wrap up soon, there should be some clues out there even if in Japanese only.

If not, I'll have to go with a worst case scenario that the manga is headed for 20+ volumes and drop it.

In my case, I feel a bit differently. Even if there's no indication of a manga ending by say volume 12, it doesn't mean it will go up to say for example volume 26. The reason I say this is simple.

Sure a manga may be popular enough to go past volume 12 and the mangaka may want to continue working on it. However there's a lot of volumes between 12 and 26.

At any time between then the manga could get canceled. Alternatively, the mangaka may decide on his or her own that it's time to end the series and this may be decided around volume 14 and it ends at volume 16.

If the series is destined to be 20+ volumes that may give me pause, but that by itself won't get me to drop the series. The thing is any time I start up a series that's on-going there's always the risk of going on for a long time.

For the me the key is going to be "Do I enjoy the current volumes enough to buy the next volume?" That being said the more volumes a series is the tougher the question will be.

In a Japanese article released in January of 2009, Mikabe Sesuna said that the scenario of Tena on S-string had been already written to the end and the manga serialisation was approximately in the middle of the total length. (At that point in time, 4 volumes of the tankōbon had been published.) Judging from it, perhaps the total number of the tankōbon would be 10 or so.
However, it is possible that things like the artist's changing the plan and the publisher's interfering in artist's plan will happen.
Anyway, I hope this will be useful to you.

This is EXACTLY the kind of hint I was looking for. Thanks.

From Amazon.co.jp, Tank V5 was released around that time frame. Allowing for serialization and article lead times, the mangaka was working on V6 - V8 at the time. Indication a total release of 12 - 16 volumes. Barring any change of plans.

Hoping it will be closer to 12 volumes. The farther away from 20+, the better. But at least, it does not look like it is planned for 20+ volumes which would lead me to drop it. So I'll probably buy at least a few more volumes for now.

It's my pleasure.

Just for your information. I talked with an editor of Hōbunsha, which is the Japanese company that publishes Tena on S-string in the original. According to him, the part of Tena on S-string which was carried in the magazine in the winter of 2008-2009 is included in Volume 5 of the tankōbon.

10 tanks sounds even better since, for me, the ideal number for a manga is 8 - 12 normal sized volumes. With a proper ending wrapping up most major plot elements. I just wanted to get an idea whether Tena was going to drag on and on and on ala Rumiko Takahashi or lately Peach Pit...

Again, for your information. Habitués of the Mikabe Sesuna thread of 2ch said that Tena on S-string would end soon, and the announcement from the publishing company also suggests so. I talked with the editor of Hōbunsha again. According to him, the serialisation of Tena on S-string will end in the October issue of the magazine, and the total number of tankōbon will be 9 volumes.

Excellent info. Thanks! 9 volumes is just about the perfect length for me. Count me in for all the remaining volumes then. Pre-ordered up though GN5 already. Will order the rest as they are solicited.
