I guess it's look okay. It definitely could be better. I will pass on this as I own the LE tins. I may reconsider if the BD version actually get released.

My sentiments exactly... I mean, sure, 40 Billion Double-dollars might be reasonable for a DVD set like this, but 60?!

They really did a nice job of make it feel like a breaking newspaper story/wanted poster. As such I really like this cover. I never got around to actually buying this series or watching it aside from a few episodes on adult swim. I'll be picking this up in the near future.

Do you have a source for that information?
The recent DVD box set (http://www.yesasia.com/us/trigun-dvd-box-dvd-english-dubbed-first-press-limited-edition-japan/1021916353-0-0-0-en/info.html) released in Japan in April isn't from any sort of remaster from what I can tell.
This DVD set that Funimation is releasing I'm assuming is most likely just going to use the same source as the Geneon Remix DVDs.

I have not heard of this either. Any "remaster" before wouldn't have involved FUNimation anyways. As chronoclast added, there is a good chance it's probably the Geneon remix releases (in 4-discs though).

FUNimation/Geneon announced their U.S. DVD license of the Movie back in July 2010 (Anime Expo), so don't expect the movie to be out until Spring-Summer 2011 (or earlier) probably.

Sorry for the rather big bump but I just got this set today.
I don't have a scanner or anything but the slimpacks are all in the style of old movie posters and they're all the colored manga artwork, if you know what I mean.
Obviously, I checked the opening themes. It only has that one opening. I checked episode 1, 2 and 7. All had the same opening theme animation. I'm not sure if the animation changes after a certain amount of episodes or what. I've never watched Trigun before so.

The most significant difference in the opening animation is that it should have a single animation cut towards the end of the sequence (the screen that lists the "Animation by Madhouse" credit) that changes from episode to episode. I believe the changes doesn't start occurring until a few episodes in, though, but checking episode 7 as you did should be far enough.
Thanks for the info about the openings, Mariya! That's what I was wondering! ^_^

Ditto, very glad I got the remix releases. I mean seriously? Which OP did Funi get stuck on anyway? The very first one?
Also, the remix releases are a helluva lot prettier IMO. They even put an awesome looking slipcover over each DVD despite there being no need for it at all. In hindsight, maybe if they didn't waste so much extra cash on extra frills like that they wouldn't have gone out of business so quickly. Oh well.

Actually, since most cel animation is film based, there's actually an advantage over Standard Definition digital animation in terms of detail on BD. How much of an advantage varies depending on the production values. Also, Blu-ray means less video and audio compression, since the discs hold much more space than DVDs.

I'm just not sure bringing out more detail in a show like this is really worth it. I mean IMO Trigun isn't the best looking show to begin with (yeah I know how popular it is but you gotta admit it got pretty fugly at times). How much better can it really look as a Blu-ray upscale?
Buster Darkwings
10-29-2010, 03:22 AM
About as good as the difference between a drawing scanned at 1920x1080 pixels and a drawing scanned at 720x480 pixels. (Not to mention all the composite artifacts and interlacing issues with the current masters.)
edit: More specifically it's like the difference between directly digitizing individual film frames at 1080p versus recording a film with an old analog video camera and then digitizing it.

A high definition release of Trigun wouldn't be an upscale. It would be a new transfer of the original film masters in high definition. It can make a world of difference to almost any older anime.

10-29-2010, 09:29 AM
The problem is that if Funi does a BD release of Trigun, it will almost certainly be an upscale of existing masters, which would not be good. The Japanese seem to have no interest in doing an HD telecine, and the likelihood of Funi doing one is zilch. That is, if they even had the materials available to them to do so, which I really doubt.

You know, if you're going to question the merits of a Blu-ray release, you should at least bother to understand the details when folks start to discuss why it would or wouldn't be worthwhile in various situations, otherwise it just comes off as passive-aggressive trolling.

I also want to say thanks for the pics. While Funi seems to have missed the boat on the OP situation (I'd love to know the story behind that issue, FWIW), IMO they pulled all the stops out for the artwork. That's some of the best artwork I've ever seen for this series and I own the Geneon tins (if I didn't I'd be half tempted to buy this release as well) .

I think I'm going to let the OP situation slide, if only for the care it looks like they took in the packaging. Also, I heard the individual differences for the openings were only several seconds, so I think that's not as big a deal as I had originally thought. Still disappointing? Yes. Forgivable? I think so.

I feel the same way. So they messed the OPs up by a few seconds? I personally dont care. IMO it really isnt that big of a deal and Funi really did do a nice job with this release, op issues aside. I'm just thankful that this series is still available in R1.
