I kind of like this cover art. It blends well for me. In any case, I will be getting this.

Cover's got too much going on for my taste, but I'm definitely looking forward to this disc.

Man, as usual the mechanical designs are pretty top notch. What do you even call that thing?

The obligatory Char Aznable lookalike looks pretty silly with that stupid collar though...

Bonus features: "Story So Far." I guess some people already forgot after one episode.

This is an excellent cover, btw.

I like this a lot more than the first cover.

It OK enough. Oh hell, it could be a white sheet with "UC Gundam stuff inside" hand written in Sharpie on it and I'd buy it.

Better than the split cover we got for volume 1.

I like this cover more than the 1st volume. Frontal's red mobile suit looks super cool. Heck, I've been loving all the mechanical designs so far.

If the bulk of the 29-minutes special features is taken up by a "Story so Far" recap that's basically just recycled footage, that'd be unfortunate.

I bought the first one and liked it, but I never saw any other Gundam before so I was a little lost. Can someone send me a summary or something?

If you want to catch up quickly while still watching stuff, you could watch the Gundam Movie Trilogy (recently rereleased by Bandai) and Char's Counterattack (which is the 4th movie).

There really isn't anything to know. Although that'll probably change with episode 2. It'll probably be confusing having everyone talking about "the second coming of Char" if you don't even know who Char is.

Story as according to me:
In the future, more people live in space than live on Earth. Radical space inhabitants, called Zeon, desiring independence from all Earth government start a war that kills billions.

Char is a veteran ace pilot and commander in Zeon, but only so he can secretly take his revenge on the Zeon leaders for killing his parents. After the war he becomes a "good guy." Then he goes insane, tries to destroy the Earth, and (almost assuredly) dies.

Also, survivors of Zeon have a nasty habit of showing up again whenever the next charismatic figure comes along to lead them.
That's definitely overly simple, but it's the jist of it. Unicorn happens after all of that.

I still find it funny that they haven't even introduced a single Federation character in the first episode. It's almost like the yet-another-remnant-of-Zeon guys are being setup as semi-protagonists (like in War in the Pocket).

If you want to catch up quickly while still watching stuff, you could watch the Gundam Movie Trilogy (recently rereleased by Bandai) and Char's Counterattack (which is the 4th movie).
They also just released the Zeta Movie Trilogy. That's also good if you want a shorter summary of one of the important parts of the series.

I wasn't expecting anything like postcards. I was more surprised that there are four of them.

So I don't get this. Volume 1 was an Amazon exclusive, but it doesn't look like volume 2 is even available from them. No official solicitation or preorder option is posted on their site.

Not directly! But you can purchase it in their marketplace section (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B004AJYHPG/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&qid=1289322981&sr=8-8&condition=new) through Bandai.

Vol.1 was supposed to be Amazon.com exclusive for a few months after the street date. That's why you saw a few other online retailers carrying this. Keep in mind, back then there wasn't a Bandai Ent: The Store. Therefore from Vol.2 and on, expect the BD releases to be always available there. It should be made available at the Bandai Ent. store front (Amazon.com Marketplace) when it gets closer to the street date.

Awesome cover, but I think I want to wait for a set.

I seriously doubt there will be a cheaper set for Blu-ray anytime soon, at least not one that's significantly cheaper than any set the Japanese put out.

einhorn303
11-14-2010, 07:13 PM
The closest to a set for Unicorn in the near future is going to be the R1 DVDs which will have two 50-min episodes per disc, equivalent to the old 4-ep singles, for $29.99 (http://www.mania.com/bandai-makes-solid-new-york-anime-festival-announcements_article_125686.html). Not a set, but certainly more economical for someone who wants to buy it cheaper.

I'm sure it won't happen "soon" but a complete set will happen eventually. This is Gundam, after all. I have no problem waiting in the mean time.

Well, I wouldn't expect a Blu-ray box anytime before the Japanese release one. And I'm guessing the last major Gundam OVA series was what, MS Igloo? Still hasn't been a box for that one.

08th MS Team didn't get a box release in Japan until 2007, 8 years after the original series ended.

And this is a Gundam series that is getting a simulation release in Japan and US. The typical rules don't apply here.
