No surprises here as it's the same artwork as the Sony Pictures release with a new UPC. It's a workable cover though too special. I will pass on this as own the SPHE release.
Wait, what? I guess I'm just too lazy to check, but will there be any actual differences between this and the old Sony release?

A different studio is re-release the movie at a cheaper MSRP. It appears that (if the specs are correct), it maybe English dub only.

I highly doubt it'll be dub only, it's probably just a mistake.

It'll be awful strange if this is dub-only. I've had this forever so I'm gonna skip it. Blu ray, pretty please?

I'm not sure I actually have this. I'll have to check. If not I'll pick this up as I don't mind dub only if that's the case(normally I would but I can never watch Bebop subbed)

this is funny, I read a few weeks ago that Sony was gonna start to distribute Image Entertainment's properties, guess they already know how many discs to print for this...

Already have it, so I'll pass. It'll be interesting to see the final release though.

Whoa...dudes. It's "Ted" Theodore Logan and his medieval babes.
EXCELLENT!!! (air guitar...smashes said guitar)
Have = pass, but still most triumphant!

Yep, that lens flare still sucks.

Poor Robert Bricken. He's expressed embarrassment over that quote in ANNcast (or somewhere else, but I believe it was ANNcast), but they won't let him forget.....
Anyway, already have the movie (I better, seeing as it's part of my favorite anime ever), so pass obviously. And if this is dub-only, how bizarre. Granted, it's easily one of the greatest dubs ever, but still......

Great, great film. Should have ended with a remix of Knockin on Heaven's Door over the credits, though. Would have been perfect.

I think you're referring to "HISTORICAL BABES!"
This must have been what they were talking about when they said they needed a "triumphant video."
Won't be truly triumphant until it's on BD, unfortunately.

When was the last time a release had "Animated Menus" as an extra?
I never did get around to picking up the Sony release, so I may in fact get this version.

When was the last time a release had "Animated Menus" as an extra?
Bandai still lists "Interactive Menus" as extras or special features on most if not all of their discs. I guess having menus that are not just "interactive" but "animated" is even better? As if having a clip of animation playing in the background on the main screen is really a bonus?
Are there really that many DVDs being released these days that are entirely menu-less that this is a worthwhile selling point to highlight? Even the $0.99 impulse-buy cardboard-sleeved black-and-white monster films on DVD you see in megamart checkout lines have menus. Maybe they're missing out on a key advertising component: "The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues (actual film, kind of fun, mostly terrible), featuring Interactive Menus!!"

In all fairness the Sony DVD had a very long, very impressive city-flyby menu animation. Menus like that always make me wonder how much quality had to be sacrificed from the actual video/audio quality to fit them in, though...

(rummages for disc... adds to Halloween film pile)
Disc total size: 7.2 GB
Main Feature: 4.25 GB
Menu structure: 349 MB
Bonus featurettes & trailers take the remaining.
So to answer the question, I doubt it had any effect on the encoding decisions, even with its larger than usual size. Probably cost a lot of authoring time to make tho. ;)

Since I already have it and that this version is not an upgrade with the same cover as the original release, I am passing on it.

Does anybody know if this turned out to be English dubbed only?
It actually has Japanese, English, and French audio + English and French subs :) Believe the Japanese and French audio are stereo and English is 5.1.

Looks pretty similar to past releases. Still one of the greats..good to see it getting more circulation. Now i just wish they would make more of this great series. It has its own style and that is a very classy style.

I failed to buy this back when it was relevant and was holding out for a possible BD release. I guess I might as well just buy it already.

Don't know why I've been holding out buying this since the series is one of my favs all time. I wished they changed up the cover, that might move me to finally buy it. Oh well....
