Hello folks, it HAS been quite a while....

As many long-time AODers know, every year, in February and March, we hold the lead-up to, and then the Annual Anime Championships...this will be the tenth year of the Championships, the last 8 broadcast in their entirety on AOD Sports...

Last year's Championships werent up to my usual efforts (as you know, i was dealing with a death in the family, so i ran a skeleton tourney without all the hoopla and extras everyone had come to expect...i first hope you all will forgive me and allow me to put on this years tourney, complete with all the capsules and extras you have been used to for so many years

Now, i want to address an issue that came up last year, and AODers, here is your big chance....as long-time fans know, we have had a pretty set group of animes that have been hooked up with the various NCAA teams for the men's tourney. The issue that was raised last year was that many of the animes that debuted with the Tourney in 2002 have been long out of print, and now quite a few of them are obscure titles, as a lot of folks had no clue about Kimagure Orange Road, Kaitou St Tail, or several others...plus they also noted there are many newer titles available now that may never get an invite (simply put, the numbers are such that Wolfie is running out of teams to hook up newer shows with)...

So, here is the question i am putting to you all:

1. Current Team/Anime line-up
a. Do we keep the current line-up as it is?
b. If not, when a title goes out of print, how long should they keep their spot?
c. And should we make exceptions for the true classics such as Sailor Moon, Kimagure Orange Road and other titles that were benchmarks for the Anime industry's growth in North America?

2. Or should we re-pair animes and teams each year? *shudders at the workload of such an idea, (but it was suggested!), not to mention how to deal with continuity issues from past tourneys!*

(For those who are new here, here is a list of the tournament champions, runner-ups, and the other Final Four survivors....

2002> Macross (defeated Princess Mononke....other Final Four: Sailor Moon, Urusei Yatsura)
2003> Excel Saga (defeated Sailor Moon...other Final Four: Kare Kano, Escaflowne )
2004> The Slayers (defeated Angelic Layer...other Final Four: Haunted Junction, DragonBallZ )
2005> Azumanga Daioh (defeated Fushigi Yugi...other Final Four: Inu Yasha, Battle Athletes)
2006> Utena (Defeated Outlaw Star...other Final Four: Samurai Champloo, Magical Project S)
2007> Utena (Defeated The Big O...other Final Four: Outlaw Star, Shinichin no Nana *Seven of Seven)
2008> Sailor Moon (defeated Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne...other Final Four: Azumanga Daioh, Outlaw Star)
2009> Azumanga Daioh (Defeated Battle Athletes...other Final Four: The Slayers, Vandread)
2010> DragonBall Z (defeated Tsukukage Ran...other Final Four: Battle Athletes, Onegai Teacher)

Thanks for your input

You could have added another option to the poll:
"What are you talking about?"

How does anime relate to college basketball?

LOL!!! I guess you have a point...so a short history lesson seems in order....

Back in 2002, i had this silly idea to do an odd treatment of the NCAA Tournament....usually when there are 'tournaments', they usually were poll-based to a degree, and of course, ended up as popularity contests (or unpopularity, on occasion).

So i had this crazy idea to do a tournament where each NCAA team would be paired with an anime...and when the team won, the anime 'won' and advanced to the next round,,,Match-ups were done pretty much at random, although at the time i did pair the better known animes with the better teams. The first one in 2002 was done on the old AnimEigo newsletter...we moved to AOD in 2004...and many commented on the concept ....if you were tired of the overhype by CBS, you could at least pass three weeks imagining Goku or Sailor Moon or Lina Inverse or your favorite anime characters battling each other on the court in a friendly competition...

Over the years, we added things like write-ups of the action instead of the dry here is what happened, capsules of each of the 65 teams, and the 'Lucky Dog', a second chance for a popular anime to be hooked up with a different team based upon fan voting...and one year, we hooked up with The Right Stuf for a Final Four-based sale...

I hope this helps....we do Selection Sunday shortly after the NCAA announces their Field of 65 (68 this year) ...I have to make sure all the animes and brackets work.... then we have Monday capsules, the Play-in Tuesday, then the full tourney gets underway Thursday.....

I hope this answers any questions about what we are doing here

I think the best option is to replace some of the older shows that have not stood the test of time as well as others with newer popular shows. Definitely keep all the classics though.

I agree with you there. This tournament is definately in need of a lot of fresh series that have debuted in the last few years to keep things interesting.

I kinda like the old classics mixed in with the newer stuff. Keep things the way they are :P.

Another vote for the good idea that people are supporting.

So even though the poll still has a lot of time left, i get the consensus that some of the titles that have slipped into obscurity/havent held up well over time should be removed...

Question 1: Once a license lapses, how long ? I would say maybe a few years (3-5 seems a good number) to see if the license gets picked up by someone else

Question 2; What series would you define as the Classics? Or how would you define a classic series may be the better question...

Three to five years seems about right for question 1.

As for question 2; Given the license rescues over the past couple of years, many of those series would be considered classics.

Question 2; What series would you define as the Classics? Or how would you define a classic series may be the better question...

Why not use the Top 25 Anime list, which is actually in the "Top 10 Anime" thread.
The list has not been updated for two months but it should still be useful.

OK< it looks like among those who voted, the majority want to see the more obscure titles replaced with newer more popular titles, but the classics kept.

So, starting this year, we will gradually replace 4-7 of the more obscure titles with newer titles...and rotate them every so number of years to keep things reasonably fresh.

Sound like a plan?
