Hulu added it and since I remember renting old Gaiking eps on VHS I jumped at the news. I then expressed joy to our beloved webmaster and was asked to review it. Since I need to keep notes to write a review, I figured this would be a way. I maybe watching this at a faster pace then most are comfortable with so I may speed along but feel free to take your time and savor it.
Or don't show patience and devour it, whichever you prefer. :sdsmiley:

-So we start with a boy diving among a ton of fish and a sea turtle...clearly not taking place in Tokyo.
-The protagonist will be a young boy named Daiya Tsuwabuki who is known as "Monster Kid" not because of is impressive athletic training but because 5 years ago his dad disappeared at sea and Daiya tells everyone that monsters did it. They of course don't believe him.
-Daiya isn't the only one having a hard time, his friend Naoto also suffers because he is friends with Monster Kid. Daiya shows Naoto proof (a mechanical device) that he was rescued by a mechanical dragon which is when Naoto claims he no longer believe Dayia. Just then a large green flame is seen at sea.
-Hah, Dayia was right and there are giant monsters. Take that town's people as a giant ogre and snail looking beast make land and start trashing the place.
-Dayia is 100% brave...and maybe just as stupid as he sets out to fight said monsters armed with only a spear. Just as he is about to launch one of the most futile attacks in history he sees a girl on the hill some distance away and the mechanical device turns out to be a transmitter. She tries to get him to run away but it is a non starter as he drops and launches his spear at the snail's eye, which slightly injures it but not enough it doesn't turn its head to eat him.
-Before he is eaten he is saved by the mechanical dragon again...as it eats him. Once inside he is given a special suit and thrust into the head of the dragon as it launches. The dragon also launches some other pieces which assemble into the flame giant Gaiking! Dayia is saved by two support vehicles that arrive when he is in a pinch and also learns how to maximize the use of Gaiking. It turns out that the giant responds to vocal commands by lighting up switches as attacks are called out and the girl on the hill tells Dayia first of Desper Sight and then Hydro Blazer. Luckily for the city that Daiya isn't stupid and has thrown the monsters into the bay earlier as either move, though especially HB looks like will create considerable collateral damage.
-As the good guys celebrate (and then have rebuilding to look forward to) we get to see a shot of a ruined world (perhaps made of some sort of coral?) where there are four generals assembled in front of what will be the Big bad.
Overall not bad. Clearly a giant robot show aimed at the pre-teen demo. It will be interesting to see how people react to Monster Kid going forward. I will be disappointed if Gaiking doesn't have other combination though as the three piece assemble just seems to be asking for the episode where a piece gets shot down or knocked out of place. I like combining but I like a reason for it (looking at you Impulse Gundam).
And Gaiking Fortune Telling is going to be something I look forward to at the end of every ep it seems.

AIIIIYAAAA! I still haven't restarted Sketchbook yet. Now one of the shows with some of my favorite fight scenes and villains? I probably won't get around to rewatching this anytime soon. But I'd love to see parts of this again. Hmm I might just skip from episode 1 to 15 if/when I do get to this.

So once the monster is beaten the mechanical dragon (Daiku-Maryu) bugs out and leaves the city to its own devices. Kind of seems to serve them right. And does the Gaiking have auto return function? It seems unlikely a new pilot could do it alone.
-Cast call-Shizuka is in charge of the deck and answers to Daimon. Puria Richardson is the pilot of the Stinger and Li Jianshin is in charge of the Serpent. Lulu is the young girl Daiya saw met years ago and is Gaiking support. The vice Captain's name is Rosa and the Captain in the mask is Garis.
-Dayia and Puria mix it up and wind up arm wrestling...a lot. Vice Captain Rosa breaks it up and Dayia gets to visit the bridge. He learns of the power of the Daiku-Maryu and Gaiking is powered by Flame Glitter or Flame Power.
-As Dayia is learning about the incident 5 yrs ago and the history of the Daiku-Mayru the snail enemy thought defeated revives. Dayia sorties and discovers that the Puncher Grind arm attack doesn't return. He is bailed out by Puria and discovers that to use the Gaiking's power to nullify monster regeneration he needs to use the Gaiking's horns and ram them.
-With the enemy finally defeated for good Dayia learns that the enemy comes from the center of the Earth and goes by the name Darius Army.
So none of the beast they had fought previously had the power to regenerate but the Gaiking just happens to have the nullifies built into it? That is a heck of a coincidence. ;)
Other than that rather an enjoyable ep and it looks like it will have fun battles and a number of mysteries going forward.
