Anime Draft 2011: Round 3 voting

Usual deal again, pick your favorite 3 from the pool.

First vote of course went to the great Fullmetal Alchemist so please vote for him!

Second vote went to one of the best new characters to come down the pike in quite a long time - the indomitable Victorique de Blois of GOSICK.

Third vote was tough because there were a lot of solid characters that I like and admire. But as much as I like Sora and Rin and Revy among others, I decided to support an underdog in Hayate Yagami of the Nanoha series. I thought she was a great and very under-rated character in the series.

Another challenging round for me to decide who gets my votes. It came down to five candidates: Duck, Mio, Sora, Hayate, and Yukari.

Only one was an instant vote... Mio. Then it became quite difficult, as I like the rest of those five quite a bit as well. I finally narrowed one remaining vote down to Sora, because Kaleido Star is one of my desert island shows, after all. That leaves Duck, Hayate, and Yukari. Duck is another fantastic Junichi Sato lead, Hayate is voiced by my favorite seiyuu (Kana Ueda), and Yukari is one of the highlights of Azumanga Daioh for me. After some contemplation, the nod finally went to Yukari. Everyone needs a good loose cannon every once in a while.

Not to hard to narrow down, really. Rin and Sora almost made it, and Tomoyo was a possibility, but these five (well, four), were the clear standouts.

Hayate, who I like a lot, is still fairly far down my list of favorite Nanoha characters, so she's first out. Manatsu I'll also have to sadly eliminate, I love her and her show, but she's never really struck me as a "favorite" of mine.

Evangeline was, of course, a given, and would be an automatic vote whoever drafted her. Mio's my favorite of the main four K-On! Girls, though I don't know if I like her more than Azunyan, that'd be a tough choice. And Victorique gets in mostly for Yuuki Aoi, though she's a really great character regardless.

I had it down to Kagami, Kyon, Mio and Tomoyo. That's an almost impossible choice because the character/show is "unevenly ranked." (K-On! and Haruhi are the shows I like more, but Kyon and Mio aren't my favorite characters from those shows. Kagami and Tomoyo are my favorite characters from their shows, but I like those shows less. Clear as mud?) I couldn't do it myself. I decided to have a random number generator give me three integers between 1 and 4.


Thus, I voted for Kagami, Kyon and Tomoyo because the numbers it gave me were 4, 1, and 2.

After some thought, while I like Tomoyo more based on looks, I based my vote on the fact that Makoto's arc had more substance than Tomoyo's, if we're comparing their respective titles in anime form. Sorry, Tomoyo! :(

Sora gets the automatic first vote, as y'know...she is my favourite character of all time. The second vote however was tough - and influenced mainly because of good luck. I'm rewatching Tutu and K-ON, which meant as much as I love Rin, I went with one of these two. And surprisingly, I realised just how much I loved Mio's development from moe goddess to being one of the gang.

So votes with apologies to the fowl and the mistress of zettai ryokai...

Evangeline was the easy one. The rest weren't quite top tier characters for me (though Victorique may rise as her show goes on), so it was a tougher choice, because they were close together and no one clearly trounced the competition. Victorique had the currently-airing-show advantage, and being voiced by Yuuki Aoi helps too. I was torn between Tohsaka Rin, Yagami Hayate, and Sakagami Tomoyo, and ultimately the goddess-class thighhighs and zettai ryouiki were too much to resist even if I don't have that much attachment to her character.

Basically voted of course for Big Red, a former team captain, and finally one for the birds.

I must admit I think I might have a real shot at last place this year with most of my top picks getting such little luv. :noodle:

Again, two of my favorites: Ed for males and Revy for females. Again, this left me with one more and limiting myself to only anime I have seen entirely, my only choice was Izaya, as although there could still be more Durarara!! in the future, it's done for now and I've seen all there is to see. Fortunately, this is another character who I would probably vote for over many others. Izaya is beyond a glorious bastard; he's the Light Yagami of his universe, planning out the entire second half of the series, having it all go just as planned, being the only real villain of the series, and getting off with less of a punishment than any of the characters who deserve it less.

Although not as obvious as Nagisa last round, I am pretty sure that Kyon will win this round.

Kagami was the instant vote as soon as I saw this list. Kyon was the one who jumped out next as very likely. After that it was tough. Anonymous votes are no longer being counted. Since over half of the votes for Juliet were anonymous (similar to Kamina in round 2, also your character, strangely enough), that has a huge impact on your rank.

I had my heart set on drafting Mio even before the Draft started & I'm glad that she did so well here in round 3. Of course, I also liked Yui, Azusa, Mugi & Ritsu but bass players are a special breed IMO & I think that's why I liked Mio best of all.

While I'm disappointed with Ed's showing, I'm glad he ended up tied with Victorique and Makoto. So all's good in my end :sdsmiley:.

I'm really happy to see Victorique do so well even in an early round. She was one that I really had to give a vote to this round (after the automatic vote for Makoto, one of my favorites). There were so much high priority potential votes among the other drafters' characters that I didn't even vote for my own despite being very high up there as well. Yukari did very, very well though, and I'm happy about that. Kyon was one I really wanted to vote for but also barely missed my vote this round.

Kirino (1) and Merry (2) both bombed. Ikamusume (8 confirmed) and Victorique (9) both did very well. They're all from Fall '10 or Winter '11. And yet I think you'd be rather hard pressed to empirically prove the latter two are that much more popular - if at all! - around here than first three. It's interesting how things play out for these characters.

It's so very hard to predict how characters from very new shows will do.

Indeed, it ultimately boils down to luck of the draw. So many varying factors can come into play. Plus, you have the fact that any new character has to deal with a force of great power known as long term love. Even more so if that long term love is strong.


As such the new character in question has to make an extremely strong impression on the voter in order to convince them to pass on an old favorite that they've been focused on for years. Which as you can already conclude is not an easy feat.

On a related note, I find sometimes the challenge is deciding between voting once more for an old favorite or giving praise to a new love. Then you have those cases where X vs Y could have gone either way.

In the early rounds, there tend to be quite a few long-time favorites around, so as far as new characters go, I'd think it's got to be characters that really make a big impression. If it's a character who lots of people like, but maybe only enough to place them 4th or 5th among their favorites then they're not going to do too well in earlier rounds. I can see how Ikamusume and Victorique would stand out (though I'm biased since I voted for the latter and was extremely close to doing so on the former). Merry would be a likely vote for me Round 4 and later, but too many others I want to vote for earlier on. I like Kirino (not among her haters), but she's not really a favorite of mine, though Kuroneko is and stands out (and thus got my vote even with Round 1 competition).

I think Kirino would have fared better too, if she didn't have Kuroneko to contend with. The other problem then would be "when do you draft Kirino so she can have the best chance of doing well?" If I would have went with Haruhi (who was my backup on my entry card), I likely would have had both Haruhi and Kirino (and not have Kyon). But given how the second and third rounds were loaded with top talent, I might have passed on Kirino until at least the fourth or fifth round, where the herd starts to thin out a little bit as far as top talent goes.:knowitall:

Yeah I was very surprised with how well Ika-chan did, even with the loss of the anon votes. Admittedly I didn't get into Shinryaku! until around last December, but she made such a good impression on me that I had to make her my entry character. New characters rarely make a good first impression on me, but there was an irresistible charm to Ika that completely stood out in my mind.
