Mania Grade: B

In Summary:
Disgaea's a show that continues to make me laugh. It's the rare show where I far prefer the English language adaptation over the original Japanese. When I first saw it, the whole thing just made me laugh and I found myself doing the same this time around, especially as I watched a lot of it with my kids who love the Prinnies. It's a straightforward series overall and what makes it work is the comedy of the characters as they essentially perform a road trip story. The characters simply click really well for me and the lack of a connection to the game makes it even easier to enjoy without doing comparisons. The first time I went in with no preconceptions and came away laughing. I'm still laughing and enjoying it and am glad to see the whole thing in one nice little package.

I just finished it a few days ago, and it was fairly enjoyable. I really don't get the fan rage against this one, yes there were a few changes (Gordon, Jennifer, Thursday, and revived Curtis not joining the team but they still got plenty of screentime and development, and while I would have preferred they used the "Good Ending" of the game since it's the more logical conclusion, the mix of the good and normal ending was fairly acceptable (except why didn't Lamington and Mid-Boss stop Laharl, since they could easily bring Flonne back in the game? My only guess is they couldn't in the anime, but if that's the case then their plan is a bit darker in the anime since it meant either Laharl or Flonne would have to be sacrificed. Probably Flonne, since they seemed shocked that Laharl would do that. Hmm, guess the writers didn't think that fully through, I have trouble believing Lamington would be willing to sacrifice Flonne like that.)).

Yes, it could have been BETTER, but fans acting like this was such a far cry from the games are being ridiculous. I mean, maybe they wanted Laharl and co. to actually have all the units with them fighting so Laharl has an army, but keep in mind plenty of players like to solo with the main characters and not use units, not to mention Etna still had all her Prinnies. Besides, focusing on the units would mean less screentime for the actual characters (and Prinnies, dood!).

Anyway, I only got the first game a few months ago, and I'm still playing it trying to get through all the bonus levels, and man do the levels go up high (my Laharl's around Lv. 900, everyone else Lv. 100-400). Once I finally get done, I've got Disgaea 2 ready to play. Just wish I had a PS3, so I could play Disgaea 3 and ESPECIALLY 4 as the trailer for that looked nothing short of amazing.
