View Full Version : Are Overhead Shooters Dead?

I'm talking like 1942 and the various arcade style games that were overhead shooters. The last one I can honestly think of was Ikaruga. Have there been no other attempts? I have seen the side-scrolling ones like Soldner and while those are fun it's not quite the same. Any thoughts? Or does anyone know of any new ones out there?

Sadly, there's little in the way of vertical shooters for the PS3.

The only physical disc release I can think of is the forthcoming Mamoru-Kun (http://www.play-asia.com/Mamorukun_wa_Norowarete_Shimatta_Meikai_Katsugeki_ WideHan/paOS-13-71-bp-49-en-70-44ii.html).

There's a sprinkling of older titles on PSN, like RayStorm and RayCrisis, Shienryu, and Sonic Wings. As for new/original games, Hitogata Happa (part of the Gundemonium collection) is also a vert-shooter.

Ah, ok...I'll check those out. Thanks everyone for chiming in. I grew up with vertical shooters and been craving playing one again. I have the demo for 1942 and it brought me back but I haven't been up to date on the genre. I was looking for Raiden, etc... on PSN but didn't see the ones known to me. I suppose I could have checked for Ikaruga but I think that's XBL and not PSN... I miss the genre a bit.

As has been said, if you are in any way serious about shmups then investing in a Japanese 360 and catching up on its retail and download back-catalog is the way to go.

Failing that, you could do worse than get a Japanese or modded PS2 and pick up Ibara, Espgaluda, Mushihime-sama and Dodonpachi Daioujou.

Racketboy has a great article on PS2 shmups - link (http://www.racketboy.com/retro/sony/ps2/2010/10/the-playstation-2-ps2-shmups-library.html). The article also has links to PS1 and Saturn shmups.

Getting a proper arcade stick is also a worthwhile investment for shmups.

Schmups are alive and kicking my friend. What you meant was vertical ones and not horizontal ones. Because there's plenty of horizontal ones, even on PS3. Sadly the vertical schmup is incredibly under-represented on PS3, except the handful of average ones already stated here.
There's plenty on the 360 too. And if your PS3 can read PS2 (and PS1 of course) games there's some great titles to be had...

For the record, the version of Shienryu on PSN is the "Gekioh Shooting King" version which doesn't have "tate" (vertical screen mode) and some silly extra modes. Also the music is rearranged.

Game's fun though, like a Raiden/Truxton crossover (although Daioh by Athena was pretty much the same game)

Nope. Overhead shooters are still very much alive in the indie scene.

Yeah I noticed that on XBL Indie section. I don't know much about PSN and if it also have space for indie gaming?

Yeah, there have been a few doujin releases on PSN over the past few months. Most notably for shooter fans is the Gundemonium Collection which comprises of 3 shmups. It's pretty cheap too.

Gundemonium Collection is also coming to PC (or is it already? I can't remember)
