View Full Version : New UK specific service inbound?

Just for the context here, I'm presently in Glasgow to see the anime program part of the GYFF. After the Eureka Seven screening, Jonathan Clements and Andrew Partridge (former Beez, current Kaze guy) hopped up infront of the audience for a bit of a natter that quickly went from E7 to Production Committees ("It's like trying to organise dinner reservations for three friends, four vegitarians, two Muslims, a Vegan Shetland Pony called Colin and your Aunt Mable") to Fractale to, ultimately, simulcasting.
The interesting bit of news that Andrew dropped right at the end is that (and he was being purposefully a little vague here, though the fact that they were running out of time didn't really help) he might just be involved in a new Simulcasting venture that we'll be seeing as soon as next (he specifically mentioned Spring) season. The curious part is that it sounds like it'll be a pay-service based around buying access to seasons rather than monthly fees.

If I remember rightly, Andrew had mentioned at October Expo that he'd have news on the streaming front in time for the May event. I won't complain if it gets to us sooner than that!
If I were to speculate: I'm assuming it'll be an extension of Kaze's existing French service (http://www.kzplay.fr/). The plus point of that service is that, if I'm reading it right (and my French is admittedly lousy), you get a choice between pay-per-episode (€0.99/ep), or all-you-can-eat subscription plans. Covers all the bases, really. Only question mark would be over what or how many shows they'd launch with...

Andrew's been dropping hints for a while and I assume it is related to Kaze's service - they already get a partial European license, tacking on one more sub-region shouldn't be that hard. Also, when I suggested that Manga, Beez and Kaze etc. should get together and create a combined European video portal he seemed interested*...
I don't think Kazeplay hasa total all-you-can-eat like CR's subscription, from what I recall when I looked into it before you can only watch so many hours each month.
* I think this could feasibly work like CR, where the revenues are allocated among the video providers the same way CR does with their's. Since they would be sharing costs among both companies and countries it would be more cost effective than the UK companies trying to run their own sites, which hasn't worked out great so far.

That all seems likely, particularly given the comments regarding a "shiny new product" dropped into KazeUKs twitter yesterday.

Ohoho, this is from Beez regarding Haruhi being blocked on CR in the UK:
"they're not available there but I'd not discount them being available for streaming - should be more news on that soon :)"

With Rob leaving CR, I can tell you he was the main champion of getting UK rights for shows...
So I wouldn't be surprised to see UK rights going to a competing service in Europe if one existed...

Spotted a possibly relevant tweet from Andrew today:
"I have spent my first 50 mins in the office explaining Content Delivery Networks - I'm glad I know what they are to start with..."

Also this morning: "Should have a press release out start of next week on a really cool product launching there too with sign-up and free gifts @kitacon too..."
(Can't link as Twitter's blocked on this PC, but you'll find it on KazeUK's timeline ("http://twitter.com/KazeUK))
If that's the expected streaming service, next week would be just in time for the new season. Or Andrew could throw us a curveball and announce something else entirely.

I think he said something later about it being unexpected and since we're sort of expecting a streaming service maybe this is something else..?
The AnimeUK guys are also sitting on some exclusive news that they talk about on the podcast due to be released Monday.

Interesting.
EDIT: Existing ANN logins seem to work on the Anime On Demand site as well. One less username & password to remember, then...

If you have a ANN subscriber account and have the redirect to fast server enabled then you'll have fun both logging in and clicking the forum link :p
(My account also adds a spurious admin tab that doesn't work but I don't expect that will affect many other people)

I'm just a bog-standard ANN user, no fancy stuff. Less to go wrong. :)
I suspect they've still a little bit of work to do before they're truly "live" anyway (the My AOD page still has copy/paste references to ANN, for a start), so I'll allow them a few foibles!
Thread for this in the R2/Europe forum now as well, have posted a link to the press release there.
