Yup, Xenogears is coming to the US PS Store tomorrow! I own the PS1 disc version but am tempted to double dip for the convenience of playing this on the go.

This has to hurt the collector's price for the physical copy, right?
I'll probably buy it to support more JRPG PSone releases. It doesn't hurt that I like the game as well.

Still has my PS1 copy intact so i'll not buy it for now. But this is awesome news for lots of people. And i still might get it down the line...

Not by much, I bet. A lot of the PS One RPG folks want the physical copies, period. Disc or GTFO, they say.

Already own the Greatest Hits version and I don't plan to double dip right now. Nevertheless it's great that it's available on PSN tomorrow. Hope they will put up the other Square games soon.

If you have the disc, the download version doesn't add any notable conveniences does it?

Apart from being able to take on the go by putting it on a PSP, not really, no.

Well, I guess you can play it on PSP (without having to mod the PSP/convert the game oneself), and I presume the loadtimes will be better running from HDD or memory stick than they were from CD. I guess you wouldn't have to physically change the disk, either.

If I was an owner of the physical disc, and I really wanted to replay this game, I'd just download it from PSN. It would lessen the chances of something happening to my actual discs.

Didn't seem to affect the price of the PS2 (and well inferior) Marvel Vs Capcom 2.
And I still have Xenogears (plus sample disc and guide) so I'm good.

I would be able to play it on my PS3 then, unfortunately only PS3 games are region codefree. You also don't need a memory card to play it.
That reminds me I still need to finish my second playthrough which I started five or so years ago.

Interesting. I've heard a great number of positive and negative things about this game over the years (largely that it's a giant "rip-off" of Evangelion, and that it makes just about as much sense).

I always thought that the "largely" part that upsets most people is that the game completely shifts the way it tells its' story when you switch discs.
On the comparison, eh. I like this game's story more then Evangelion.

There were no load times on Xenogears that I recall other than the battles, but the swirl would negate any potential speed boosts. Sure there's the no disk swapping but really, other than being able to play it on the go, it's no better than the PS1 version.

There's another reason to play it on the PSP, no pixalation of a PS1 game on a HDTV. I tried to play Grandia from the PSN on my HDTV and it was AWFUL! It looked much much better on the PSP small screen.

It only has a few very superficial similarities with Evangelion. The stories really aren't much alike at all. That would be somewhat akin to someone saying Tales of Symphonia is a rip-off of Final Fantasy X, because of the vague story similarities they would share.

That does sound like a definite benefit to go along with playing on the go. Granted the problem for me is along the lines of the fact even with that, I don't have much desire to buy a second copy of the game.
The same could be said for other games, but it doesn't help that Xenogears isn't exactly a higher level favorite along the lines of if I need to come up with examples, you don't know me well enough.
It has been awhile since I tried playing a PS1 game on the HDTV which I need to do through the PS3. Likewise, I never really tried playing a PS1 game on the PSP.

I ordered a physical copy directly from Square Enix not even 2 years ago. I doubt any physical copies are worth much outside of the original print run with the old Squaresoft logo.

Interesting, I never picked this up on PS1 so this could be a maybe!

I only played few RPG games, and Xenogears were among them and surly my favorite one. I wish if i could get to play it with Japanese audio but then again all the sound effects/special moves are the Japanese ones, and the dialog/cut scenes in the game are not much. Since i gave away my physical copy to a friend of mine, i guess it's time i get a copy back to my collection :)
