There is only one way to make our Daily Life better! That's by watching Nichijou. Yeah, I just saw episode 0 and thus why this discussion thread is being started. Only a few weeks or so until the season begins proper. So then...

No opening or ending in this version. Ok, there are credits (on black screen) and they do play the song from the trailer.
I already liked Mio from the manga, but hearing her voice and seeing the blue hair constantly makes her even better.
Our first segment involves Mio and Yuuko. Seems that the latter did poorly on a test.
Multiple cut-away scenes to Mio fishing. Must be some metaphor.
Yuuko is fun, but I've decided to marry Mio.
The next segment is fun with Nano, the doctor, and the cat. The third one even has dialog.
Nano's voice is working well for me based on my experiences with the manga. Another positive sign.
Mai, Mio, and Yuuko shall sleep on a train. One in the luggage area, one on the seats, and one on the floor.
Over all, this was definitely right for me. Might have more to say after a re-watch.
One more thing to say. Having a girl walk around with a windup key in her back is an amusing visual.

It's pleasant and relaxing to look at. You can get idea what it's like by finding some youtube trailers which have been linked to in the past.

I didn't expect Episode 0 to be almost full-length.
So far there's not too much to say. Visually, the colors are nice and soft. The director apparently likes full body shots from high angles.
I don't know the girls well enough to have them click with me yet (certainly too early for body fluids :(). I like how the talking cat's easily distracted. It'll be interesting to go back and watch this episode again once I get to know the girls.
The scenes themselves went on too long for my taste. I expect that to be fixed during the series though.

The first mini-episode with Yuuko's test score seemed to drag on a little bit for me, but the second and third were really enjoyable. The Hakase's group particularly seems to have potential for a lot of interesting interaction, and I found Sakamoto-san pretty amusing.

I liked the general idea of the first segment, but even I have to admit that in some ways it was starting to run a little long. I wonder if more variety in how the segment was going might have helped.

I wonder if every episode is going to be split into in 3 parts. First part: Hmmm, I get the gag of trying to overcome one's failure on a test, but it felt pretty dragged on which made the punchline in the end kind of weak.
Second part: I see comedic potential with the child professor, a robot girl who takes care of that child professor, and a talking cat who thinks he's all that in this one. I grinned in this one.
Third part: I like this one; it was short and straight to the point with each girl laying down from top to bottom inside the train with the glasses girl laying on the overhead compartment with the luggage....wait, what?

-1 is the loneliest number.
-Man the color choices in this show make it look like it's from the mid 90s.
-It must be hard to compliment a friend who is a dumb as carp.
-Mad science loli is sick. Robot girl will make her all better.
-Kuroneko-sama (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DQUZ8F7cc4)?
I may not like Nichijou. That was alot like the first episode of Lucky Star. Boring. The lack of anything like Lucky Channel is serious. Well I guess the science loli and wind up girl have promise. But it was too much like talk about which end of a pastry is the head for my taste.

Meh, I still like the first episode of Lucky Star. Actually if anything, I think that series started to lose a few points when it became more reliant on direct references.
Although it balanced it out by gaining points by increasing the cast size and having awesome characters. Speaking of which, that's what Nichijou needs to do.
Make use of the other cast members. Doing so would add variety and make things more interesting. And hopefully unlike Lucky Star, they'd do it earlier as opposed to later.
As for Lucky Channel, I hate to use the word "overrated", but sometimes I find the praise for it questionable. Don't get me wrong, it has its amusing moments.
However for the most part, it actually got repetitive in some ways. Plus, it felt like it kept taking time away from the main show. Well, to be fair Akira at the very least was part of the manga.
Suwako will be so mad at me.
Relax (Dangerous Suplex Combo!), I (Crimson Flare) am (Life Sprinkler), a (Stone) reasonable (Ultima) person (Reaper).

To me Akira was THE BEST part of Lucky Star. She is my favorite character in the show bar none. Her bi-polarness is just so adorably sexy. They never made a Figma of her did they...
But yeah Lucky Star got better when more characters showed up. The dynamic of just the main four girls wasn't enough for me. At the time I liked the references to other anime. But they'd probably not be as funny now. Plus I hate Haruhi. But I will never get tired of the Legendary Girl A segments. It's just the rest of the show that upon some CR rewatch hasn't held my attention.
So yeah Nichijou needs to mix in more characters quick or it will lose my interest.

I'm still scratching my head at the whole Lucky Channel concept. But whatever. Three years ago already.
If they plan to do 3 segments per episode, then yeah, we've got a major problem here. You can't do inane for 8-9 minutes straight. It just collapses under its own weight like it did in the first and second segments. And when it just doesn't work...it starts to get painful (see first segment).*
But I doubt that's going to happen. The shotgun approach of shorter segments is a proven winner for this type of (either loosely established or non-existent plot) show that depends on the appeal of its characters.
Someone will have to tell me how this episode was distributed, but it felt like something more for fans than for newcomers.
*Comparably, the best segment, the 3rd, was only 2.5 minutes long and breezed through with 2 distinct pieces of business and two settings. I expect (and hope) this will be more in line with the main show's style and timing.

The first segment was definitely reminiscent of the Lucky Star food conversation, but I was able to enjoy it because it's about something interesting, rather than ways to eat different food, which makes an absolute bottom-of-the-barrel conversation topic even in real life. Also, it was a much better introduction for Mio and Yuuko in terms of character development than the food conversation was for Konata, Tsukasa, and Miyuki.

Episode 00:
- Oh god I love the visual style so much already.
- "Thirty twelve!"
- Hahaha a 1. GJ Yuuko.
- I'm a touch under 3 minutes in and I'm pretty sure Aizawa Mai has spoken more lines as Mio than in the entire run of Lucky star as Ayano. Plus, Honda Mariko was Kurimu in Icdhizon! I love that there's a whole lot of brand new or fairly new seiyuu this time. May they enjoy as much smashing success as the K-ON! girls.
- Hahaha, oh god, Mio is totally torn between doing her best to cheer Yuuko up, and having a very hard time taking her seriously. :sd:
- Mio writes manga?
- Hah. I think Mio has broken Yuuko. She's sure going all out with this. :sd:
- The fish is almost caught! So close!
- :sd:
- Hakase! Oh god her lab coat is down to the floor. Bit more exeperienced a seiyuu here in Konno Hiromi, and lots of KyoAni roles (Potato, Akira, Suzume, FMP).
- Back to really new seiyuu with Furuya Shizuka for Nano.
- As for the cat, well, you knew Shiraishi would be in here somewhere... I've gotten bored of Shiraishi as Shiraishi so I'm glad he's playing a character this time.
- Gaaaah, Hakase is waaaaaaaay too cute.
- Medicine fail!
- Sakamoto is a very easily distracted cat.
- A plan is hatched! Nano shines!
- I love how Hakase is just completely ruthless about blaming everything on Sakamoto-san. =D
- Oh man I so thought Mio was going to try the cartwheel and bump into an angry salaryman or something.
- Mai speaks! Togashi Misuzu.
- Mai sleeps in the luggage rack. o_O
- Yuuko... I don't care if Japanese trains are cleaner or not, lying down on the floor of one seems like a horrible idea.
I'm 95% sure Mio is going to be my favorite character. She's amazing.
And I'm 100% sure I love this show. WANT MOOOOOOORE! Why can't I preorder the BDs yet? ;_;

I don't what to think about this...it seems to take place before the manga.
The first part is cute, but sorta...boring. It went on way too long. Mio is definitely awesome.
The second is great. NANO! Cat with a bandana = awesome.
The third part is...short. I really don't understand the whole sleeping while on a train thing...wouldn't people miss their stops?

To agree with what seems to be the general consensus, I felt the first segment suffered from dragging on too long as well. There wasn't enough content to stretch it out for anymore than a few minutes and the fact that the direction it was going with the joke was obvious from the beginning made it a struggle to maintain my attention. I guess it did a good job of setting up the characters though as it revealed a lot about their personalities.
The second segment worked a lot better, mainly because it had a cute snotty loli. Her interactions with the random robot girl and talking cat were adorable.
The final segment benefited from being the shortest. Fun interactions between the three girls goofing off.
Pretty low key so far, but I enjoyed the character interactions. The wonderful A Channel is still the school girl slice of life series I'm looking forward to the most this spring though Nichijou has the KyoAni advantage so I'm looking forward to seeing if they can work their magic once again.

This is definitely going to be one of KyoAni more bizarre series. At least the animation is up to their standards, and the music is pretty godly (Yuuji Nomi is doing the music!!!).
It has such a relaxing atmosphere with a bunch of strangeness going on at the same time. Comedy will vary among each segment.

A light-hearted absurdist moe comedy. The characters are quite cute...so far Mai Minakami and the teacher stand out to me.
- Apparently "Selamat pagi" is Indonesian for "good morning." And "selamat malam" means "good evening."
- The skeet shooting gag is good, but...I might prefer the Epic Wiener Scene.
- I'm sure there's plenty of Japanese wordplay (or reference to old poetic forms?) I'm missing with the principle.
- People can get shot with handguns and stand up perfectly fine...makes sense.
- Sasahari-sempai considers the goat a member of the family?
- It seems like Yuuko & friends + Nano & Professor are the two primary groups of main characters. I wonder if they'll meet in future episodes.
- The walk cycle animations in the ED are totally cute. Although the whole episode is full of wonderfully cute animation.
This is definitely going to be one of KyoAni more bizarre series. At least the animation is up to their standards, and the music is pretty godly (Yuuji Nomi is doing the music!!!).
The music automatically stood out to me. I love shows which hearken back to the Tex Avery days, when every cartoon had real orchestral backing as a music score.

-Why is Katsuragi Keima riding a goat?
-Akebeko bobblehead cow?
-Upsidedown bunny...
-Skeet shooting? This show is getting weirder.
-They sure do ike downward looking 3/4 RPG camera angles.

By the end of the episode I was satisfied and wanted to see more, but the first 2/3 didn't really do anything for me. The jokes and gags made me smile, but that had more to do with the moe character design than them really being funny or anything. Really, I felt that a lot of the what I was watching was trying to skate by solely on moe and nice animation here and there. I was pretty down on the series as a whole until the last 1/3 came up. The last 1/3 made me lol on a regular basis, especially the Helvetica Standard segment and the goat kid, and made up for the kinda sorta a little funny but not really first 2/3 of the episode.
I think the art style, music, and animation quality will be enough to get me through the down parts of each episode but I'm hoping it won't always be a case where 2/3 of the episode is kinda meh and 1/3 is super great.

I expected that I'd love this show from what I could tell beforehand, and the first episode made it quite clear that my intuition about it was spot on. I love jokes that are set up ahead of time and take a bit to come to fruition, like the 'objects identified in the explosion' that, in sequence, fall on Yukko's head. Nano and the Professor are also adorable, and I get the impression I'm going to love Mai (her character type is easily one of my favorites). I'm also curious about what Nonohara Himeko and Katsuragi Keima are doing out of their own shows and in this one, but I'll just have to roll with it for now...

I enjoyed this episode more than episode 0. A lot of the humour is probably beyond my comprehension of Japanese culture and word play, but it was bizarre enough to keep me interested. I think I enjoyed the segments with the robot girl the most.
HitokiriShadow
04-05-2011, 02:08 PM
Oh, right, I still have to watch episode 0.
Bwahahaha, Mio is awesome and hilarious. The episode basically spends seven minutes on her manipulating her friend out of a depression over grades, and its awesome. Especially Mio getting ticked at one point and nearly undoing all of her previous efforts. The flashes to Mio fishing as a metaphor were cute.
.... Then it gets weird. But very, very cute. We have an ~8 year old scientist-looking girl called Hakase/Professor, an apparent robot girl with a big windup key sticking out of her back.... and Shamisen a talking cat.
And then.... sleeping on a train. It was cute. Oh, and we meet another friend who is... very odd. I'm looking forward to more of her.
Well, that was very cute and highly amusing. The first segment was definitely my favorite. Mio is so awesome and cute and adorable and awesome. Mio's ability to praise her idiot friend and convince her that she was actually brilliant was amazing.
Edit: Um, yeah, I was very much in the "the food conversation nearly put me to sleep" camp on Lucky Star, but I'm on the opposite side here. I loooooooved the first part, it was hilarious and I didn't think it dragged on too long at all.
HitokiriShadow
04-05-2011, 02:44 PM
..... That was far, far stranger than I would have expected based on episode 0.
It was pretty funny though. Epic weiner grab is epic.
So the gun/bazooka girl is Misato. Her first appearance in the show is.... her shooting someone in the head with a pistol. Mio's currently my favorite, but there's a good chance she'll be my second after her.... though she'll probably have to compete with Mai for that position.

Sad part is that even having read some of the manga, I still only know the names of a few of them. Which makes me suspect some get introduced or named later.
Hopefully, they won't take too long to name people. Since after all I kind of like to have those names to make things easier on me. They need to put up character bio pages. Which if they exist, I can't find...

Clearly you need to play more RPGs and refresh yourself on the "event scene" curse. The one where suddenly you go from being able to survive an atom bomb blowing next to you to dying instantly from a slap on the back.

Episode 1:
- Pre-motivation!
- Nano is so adorable.
- o_O The scale of that explosion caught me off guard. :sd:
- !!! God damn. KyoAni just doesn't know how to many OP/ED sequences that aren't amazing, do they? This was fantastic. I doubt I'll import the song because it's not the style of music I listen to, but it fits the OP sequence well. God damn that's awesome.
- Yukko is special! Very special! It's not just anyone who can get bopped in the head with these things. But oh man, salmon on the head is gonna be icky...
- "At least I wasn't hit by raw fish" XD
- Keima is riding a goat.
- Selamat pagi. The greeting that gets no reaction.
- Wait, a reaction! Mai is Yukko's hero!
- Adorable nervous teacher.
- Nano is on a roof! She's worried about jumping off when she already survived being flung hundreds of feet.
- Chopstick! Sandal! Hand! Nano is having the worst say ever!
- Yes Nano, we wouldn't want anyone to find out you're a robot...
There is a bunny walking on its ears.

- Mio-chan, we've got to do something about your taste in men.
- Oh god, Mio is utterly petrified when the alarm actually goes off. XD
- I can't decide who is cuter, Mio or Nano. I love them both.

Very cute ED. <3 <3 Nano.
And Spring is officially off to an amazing start. This episode sure should put to rest all the concerns people raised in episode 0 about the jokes being too slow. The pacing of the actual series proper is clearly faster.

- Delayed reaction. Very delayed reaction.

- Hakase's shark obession is so odd.
- Rollcake in your arm. Wait what. o_O
- Hahah oh god, poor poor Nano.
Even if rollcake wins, Hakase will eat it anyway. ;_;
Oh god, the jumprope scenes just get more painful. I felt that one.
- Mio... don't draw homoerotic pornography in your homework notebook. :sd:
- O_O. The animation in this show is just absurdly good. All the little visual novelties and such are great, and when we get into EPIC ACTION time like this and the weiner, it's just amazing.
- And you knew it wouldn't end for her when she got the book back. :sd:
That... that was such a polite rejection, Hakase.
Pyon!
- Oooh, Mai sees Hakase and Nano. Will they all cross over soon?
- Misato's firepower is increasing...

- SO TSUNDERE!
No normal ED this time, they used it for the Misato/Sasahara scene instead.

-A doodle of something that God only knows about!
-HOLY SHIT! Nichijou just became the best show of the season.
I do hope they continue with the random moment of epic animation each episode. The sheer passion and energy in the chaser scene and last episode's weiner scene make up for the parts that are just strange for the sake of being strange. The strange scenes that don't involve Nano & Kakase that is. Those two are so adorable. The eclecticness of this show really helps gloss over the not so funny bits though.

Music and animation, certainly. That's what I love so much about this, and so many things KyoAni does... they put so, so much love and effort into their animation even when it's a show like this, where they won't get full credit because there's no epic mecha battles or super-detailed character designs or sweeping vistas over beautiful fantasy landscapes.
Sure, they have a well-deserved reputation for good animation and people expect it from them, but there's absolutely no "need" to animate this show so damn well for it to be effective. And yet scene after scene these simplistic, soft, colorful character designs are manipulated in awesome ways, and I don't just mean epic wiener or epic running. It takes a special kind of dedication to try so hard while knowing that some people will totally write off the art as "simple" because the character designs don't look super-detailed like Haruhi or Hanasaku. See K-ON!, which is one of the best animated things in ages. You just need to be paying attention to notice. Lucky Star was pretty amazing on this count in its own way, but Nichijou really takes it up a few notches with the quality of the visual gags.
I do wonder, however, how invested I'll end up getting with these characters. My investment in the K-ON! girls is almost unmatched, and I came to really love the Lucky Star girls too, albeit not on quite as intensely emotional a level since it focused much more heavily on gags. Will the surreal/absurd nature of Nichijou - which, don't get me wrong, is totally its strength so far - make it harder to inject emotional moments here and there?
I think Nano is our best bet on this point. Adorable robot-y angst! I don't mean that I want Nichijou to turn into a serious drama, but I wouldn't mind if it made me cry once or twice.

I love Mio's rewind memory. Mio's cute and small, but don't piss her off. That corkscrew punch looked painful. And her drawing... wow. I... I think she drew Sasahara receiving fellatio. Her freaking out over it is hilarious. And holy crap, that chase scene was just fantastic.
It was very nice to see Misato get a whole segment at the end. She's probably my second favorite girl after Mio, though its a close competition with Mio.
Hakase continues to be criminally adorable. And poor Nono continues to learn about new unfortunate functions being installed on her without her knowledge or consent.
And it looks like the kendo girl from the OP is Mio's older sister. I didn't realize it was her until Mio started seeing her life before her eyes later in the episode.

Now Sakamoto joins Hakase and Nano. I guess the downside to watching the OAD first is that I already knew exactly what his voice would be, and it would have been a bit funnier if I didn't. But I loved their "ji~~" faces after he first spoke.
And Yuuko really needs to learn when to throw in the towel. Well, for her sake. For my amusement, its better that she doesn't. It was pretty amusing to watch Mai kick her ass over and over.

I never watched the OAD, but read in this thread that the cat talked. Without ever hearing it, I automatically imagined him talking in a deep-set male voice. As this episode started, I thought, "Wait, I've imagined that for so long, but... what if his voice is actually different?" But nah, it was exactly as I imagined.
I think he'll be a great addition to the Professor and Nano corner.

Episode 3:
- Oh, so we're meeting the cat now?
- I love this OP. <3 <3
- Mai, master of delayed greetings.
- ...The walking catbox is hilarious to me for some reason.
- Hahah, Yuuko, it looks like you're proposing with a broccoli bouquet.
- Yuuko can't decide which of the many things she did wrong could cause this. :sd:
- There's the box again. The blurred, far-off camera angle that occasionally shakes makes it so much better.
- Did you eat the entire lunch, Yuuko? :sd:
- HAHAHA, the bit about the statue was total gold. Yuuko's increasingly desperate thought process was hilarious. And then Mai's revelation at the end... =D
I love love love love flustered-sensei.
- Hahaha, Mai's silent torment of Yuuko is fantastic. And I'm loving Yuuko's seiyuu.
- Go catbox, go! Run like the wind, catbox!
- Cramps betray Yuuko.
Janken and jump rope segments are gold and I hope they continue in every single episode. Of course Mai gets through fine.
- Nano squeeing over the cat made me so happy. <3
- Holy crap, Nano and Hakase are going crazy.
- "I invented a scarf that can let it speak!" o_O Just like that.
- "How old are you?" "Eight." "One." :sd:
- Sakamoto-san to you youngins!
- Hahhaah, Nano is about to ditch it. XD
I totally don't get the Helvetica Standard segments, and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to. Amusing, though.

Like Tiger and Bunny, Nichijou also fell victim to the "third episode slump" this week IMO. In the case of this show, the slump was due to 4/5 of the episode consisting of "Yuuko the Butt Monkey" (as it takes away from the variety and bizarreness that was common in the two previous episodes).

It's correct in the sense that there's a value to mentioning how many BDs the series will be and give an idea as to how many cour.
In general, the idea seems to be to create a thread in the BD forum along the lines of [JP]Nichijou for the BD release.
And perhaps a thread for the DVD release would go in the R2J forum. Although it seems people rarely make such threads if a BD version exists.

Just a bit too much Yuuko this week. She's funny, but her segments ran just a tad too long.
I never did watch the OAD, so the cat talking was a surprise. I don't know why, since its been clearly documented that Nono is in fact a robot, so a scarf that makes a cat talk isn't that much more bizarre.
Mai was pretty hilarious this episode though, her trolling of Yuuko is masterful.

- Izumi Sakurai is incredibly cute. Well, I've always had a thing for cute teacher characters.
- That 98 yen snowman is absurd for so many reasons.
- Most hillarious scene this episode for me is definitely the one where Yuuko and Mai are taking the English test. When the camera panned up to another hand drawn on the chalkboard, I lost it.
- The blonde girl who reads Helvetica Standard seems interesting. I hope we get more scenes with her soon.

I almost never get into these discussion threads, but the delightful off-kilter and slightly experimental nature of this show has me more interested. Especially with surprisingly weird notes like a muted version of the Paul Desmond / Dave Brubeck Quartet classic Take Five (http://youtu.be/BwNrmYRiX_o) playing over the last bit of Mai's Yuuko-tormenting comic strip. That was cool, and very, very odd. But perfectly executed. I like this show.
And I quite enjoy Yuuko, of the main three girls, so everything clicked this episode. I haven't seen the OAD, so I didn't know about the cat's voice. Seems an appropriate element of maturity to help balance that strange household.

Nano's now starting to interact with the main cast, she had a very...interesting encounter with Mio's sister, and then Mio sees her in a field. Nano was looking wistfully at our trio as well.
I'm really hoping Nano will get to interact more with the other characters. Her scenes tend to be the most consistently funny for me.

That was quite nice- I've almost always loved acapella versions of OP/EDs, and this was no exception.
And a big O_O at Norio Wakamoto (who the could just have not bothered putting his name on screen, EVERYONE had to know it was him...) doing the preview. I don't think it necessarily implied more of them will be coming- just that those are some SERIOUSLY badass wooden cubes...

Weboshi and Fecchan! I've been looking forward to these two getting introduced. They seem pretty fun from the OP. I'm also pleased to see that they're part of the Misato group. And Misato's blushing was adorable.
Though not nearly as adorable as Hakase lying and trying to change the subject. And as a result, she manages to get Nano to *want* to be able to get cavities.
I got a kick out of Nano's hand flying all over the place during the first half of the episode. Though I'm disappointed we didn't actually see its impact.
And I loved the elevator scene. They've been stranded for god knows how long, they're minds slowly fading to oblivion, and then they all just snap. Well, Mio and Yuuko snap, while Mio suffers from a sort of sleep paralysis.
Most of the show doesn't do it for me, but I still love the scenes with Nano. Her crying because she can't get cavities was so cute, especially when she made Hakase promise to add that feature.

I question the idea of wanting a cavity feature, Nano. Wait, if she's the creation, then why does she have so much authority over the creator?
I wonder if Misato's tsundere levels are the source of her magical girl powers. Actually, I'm surprised that she and Mio have never really clashed given their interest in the same person.
A club that combines Go and Soccer that doesn't do anything. We can probably guess why Yuria stays.

OK, with the narrator at the end I'm firmly convinced that they just have WAY too much money to blow on this show. It does make for some very interesting scenes though, like Yuuko vs. The Mosquitos.
I think I laughed the hardest at Nano and the mosquito- both why she'd be worrying about them in the first place, and knowing she'd likely react badly at actually getting one- and then falling backwards onto her key and then over onto her side. That was funnier than I expected it to be.
I also got quite a kick out of Mio & her sister, primarily for the fact that I'm in the Kendo club here myself- the Men I could understand hurting as her sister had taken her Men armor off- but the Do shouldn't have even been felt through the Do armor. I'm going to imagine that last hit was a Tsuki- and I knew there'd be one last hit. :)
Why DOES Nano believe Hakase when she says it was Sakamoto's fault? I was hoping she would actually remove the key so Nano would be more willing to interact with the rest of the cast...

Yep, but unfortunately the punchline was lost in the CR translation.
When the bird (presumably a sparrow) hands over the 5 yen coin (when they actually owe 60,000 yen), the subs say "It's not much, but..." which is basically the meaning of what he said with a tear in his eye.
However the punchline is that the expression that he used for "It's not much" was 雀の涙 (suzume no namida) which is an idiom meaning an insignificant amount (like "a drop in the bucket") but literally means "a sparrow's tear". :)
I'm not sure if a note would have helped or not. Explanatory notes and punchlines usually don't mix very well as this post probably demonstrates.

-Yuuko absent for three days. Finals tomorrow. This is her best chance for a good grade. Her brain is the least cluttered.
-Yuuko is going to die? Super ultra great delicious wonderful bad!
-Yuuko daydreams of a naked cowboy.
-Well I'm sure not hungry now.
-Awww Sakamoto's gone. hehehehe
This episode wasn't funny. Then Hakase showed up and nano. Yay! But they went away. Boo! There was far too much Yuuko. Mai was not trolling her hard enough. Mai fell asleep.

I like Yuuko, but there is way, way too much of her spazzing out. There were two segments of that this episode, and they were the longest segments in the episode.
That being said, the second did end with an unambiguous act of kindness from Mai (well, by her standards at least), so if nothing else I got more Yuuko/Mai fuel out of it.
The Hakase stuff was funny, though the best was the callback at the end of the second segment. And Nano rocks those hotpants. More of that!
The rest was ok, but nothing spectacular.

Mirai, huh? Would never have guessed. I guess they don't necessarily have to be that much of a celebrity among seiyuu to be the preview narrator anymore.
I liked the studying and test bits a little, since I can relate and it's always fun to see the extremes these themes are pushed to, but there was a little too much of that. I think the best parts are usually the really short segments with punchlines that really catch you off guard. They manage to fit in a few of those anyway, so it wasn't too bad.

Another narrator I didn't recognize. My first thought was one of the delusion Eucliwoods, and in fact she was, but I could never have guessed exactly who based on that. She was Ushio too. Nice.
Well more of the same, but I'm alright with that. I really love when Kyoto Animation goes all out with the really great animation.

..... That was an incredibly dull episode. The only part that was even moderately entertaining was Yukko freaking out during the test.
But her segment in the beginning was really predictable and not very funny, while the rest of the first half was just downright boring. The second half was better only because Yukko's short part was actually funny and at least the Professor is always cute even if it wasn't very amusing.

Much better than the previous episode. Annaka's segment wasn't as good as her "Eeeeeh!?!" scene a few episodes ago, but it was still pretty amusing and even her mild freakouts are cute. Mio at least had one segment in which she played a decent role, as opposed to being almost completely absent in the previous 2-3 episodes. And Yuuko's scenes here were overall better than last episode (her freak out over the test was better than her freak out over the homework, but the rest of her stuff was drastically better than her spending five minutes trying to get out of doing her test.
Also, Nano must have some extremely strong urges to just smack Hakase at times. The crap she pulled in this episode would be infuriating to put up with in real life.

- Betrayed by daifuku. ;_;
- God Mio is so cute, but so underused!
- It must be really hot in that lab coat, Hakase.
- oh she agrees. Shade!
- SPINNING HAKASE!
- Yuuko is being consolged by a dog. You know, there's something dangerous about being named Yuuko in a high school slice of life comedy this season isn't there?
- Hahah, Sakamoto-san is troubled.
- Oooh, more Misato and Sasahara.
- The Most Dangerous Tsundere. You know, I hope Mio never makes a move on Sasahara because she wouldn't live long... Besides, it's adorable watching Misato fret. Mio's limited time on screen is better spent on other things.
- ANNAKA!!! Yaaay! Please please please let there be more "Ehhhhhhhhhhh?"
- God damn Japanese carnies. Always ripping customers off!
- Worst prize ever. How did that not get an "Ehhhhhhhh?" out of her? ;_; Still, I love her. Totally my favorite minor character, followed by Sakurai-sensei.
- Yay more Mio! Yuuko's backpack reminded me of Hachikuji mayoi's for a second from the far shot.
- Losing someone else's wallet. Awkward.
- Oh nice. Take the money out of the wallet before turning it in to the lost and found? Mean.
- Worst amusement park visit ever.
- Ooh it's the woman from the OP in the coffee house. But with adorable Sakurai-sensei instead of Yuuko.
- Wow she's adorable. And totally Sakurai-sensei's long lost sister.
- Heh, the theme of this episode is "Yuuko does something competently for a change but it backfires anyway."
- Hakase with the key! And that ponytail! Awwww.
- Haha didn't last long.
- Nano has an idea! She can get the key off!

Nano is going to school! This episode had a surprisingly large amount of lead-up to that, and I kind of wish they used that time for shorter and funnier segments like usual. Especially since most of the other scenes (the ones at school) were about Yukko getting an 80 on a test (plus one of each of the other regular segments). That did have a decent payoff, although somewhat predictable, and I found it amusing that their conversations would keep leading to new "acts" with different, unique titles for no reason.
Also, back to more notable seiyuu, at least to me, for the preview narration.

Yuuko's segments are still hit or miss, and tend to go on too long, though it wasn't as bad as last time.
I'm actually getting kinda tired of Hakase, it'd really be nice to see Nano, who is hands down the best character in the show, get to interact with someone other than the brat.

While I didn't love the first OP song - I did like it, I don't really care for the second OP song much at all.
For the ED song we get a cover of Akai Tori/The Red Birds' (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=MHCL-1571) classic, Tsubasa wo Kudasai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7in5rpYU584) (from their 1971 album - Takeda no Komuriuta). That song has been covered quite a bit. It really is a very pretty song, and this cover works well IMO.

This episode definitely had the most of one plotline, with Nano getting ready to go to school, actually going there, and experiencing her first day. It worked out really well, and all it still had all the insane humor it has in all the episodes. Nano finally got to interact with the other main characters, and while for the most part she just got to watch them have an epic battle of words, I'm sure there will be a lot more great interaction.
The new OP is very much a continuation of the previous one, so I'm really happy about that. I can't listen to that ED without seeing the climactic scene of Evangelion 2.0. I wonder if it will be different every episode.

Mio destroying cops, friends, innocent old men, and goats in an instant for accidentally catching a peek at her... art... was the most epic scene in anything in a while. - Well, obviously Mio has, like, BL in that bag. But they think it's counterfeit money. =D
- Ahahaha, Mio is bribing the cops!
- OH GOD she took out a cop! Then epic paper grabbing!
- ...She took down the goat. o_O Bodies everywhere! Do NOT fuck with Mio.
- Well that was absoluetly one of the most epic segments yet.
- Okay I can totally get into these "watch Hakase and Nano dance cutely" bits.
- Heh, really liked the eraser bit.
- And they see Nano afterward! Man, it's weird how cohesive episodes feel now with Nano being in school. I loved the first half of the show, yes, but I can only imagine that if Nano started going to school in, like... episode 4, this would have sold much more than 4k. Ah well. I like it just the way it is.
- Daifuku guy is mohawk boy's father... and he has a mohawk of his own >_>
- HAH, perfect timing on Nano slamming the door in Yuuko's face. And oh god, NANO CRISIS!
- Oh god, this is going to be hellish for Nano. There's no way she can stop Hakase for outing her.
- Hahahah, well that didn't take long.
- Hakase and Yuuko. Nano's hell.
- ...awwwwww! How nice of Yuuko. And Mai returned the screw!
Really nice ED this time, and I like the scene after it too.

Remember Hakase during the thunderstorm? Yuko getting into her home is Nano's thunderstorm.
Or the animators just screwed up and changed character models between cuts.

Heh, the funny thing about that? I can say this now since Nano going to school has been confirmed in the anime. In the manga, Nano was a student much earlier. Forget episode 4, if the anime was following the manga in regards to Nano as student, she'd already be one as of the first episode....
This one change to the structure of the story has had an effect on some of the previous scenes of the series. Although in some cases, the only real change is her not wearing her school uniform. In fact, even with her now a student there are still going to be some changes because of it.
Another change includes adapting the chapters in a different order from the manga. Although I'm not sure if the anime is time hopping like Hidamari Sketch and Soredemo or if they were just creating a new order of events. I'd assume the latter especially with the uniform change.
One has to wonder how people familiar with the manga reacted to the change concerning Nano. I have mixed feelings on it. Having Nano become a student later has more impact. However I have to admit there were times I was thinking "But, she's supposed to already be...." and stuff like that.
Actually you could beg that question in general when it comes to making changes to the story structure and adding original material. I mean take that series Yumekui Merry. Sure, some may have enjoyed the original material. However others might have seen it as just delaying source material.
That being said, I can never be too sure of the thought process of Japanese consumers. For all I know some series including Nichijou might have their fate decided before the first episode even airs.

No OP? But it's so good! Oh well, hopefully that won't happen again, and the upside is obviously more content.
Sakamoto loses his scarf to a crow, who happens to be very polite and agreeable, and gets along with the others much better than Sakamoto. Which angers Sakamoto greatly. I guess it would be a bit much to kill him, but it would certainly be normal behavior for a cat to kill a bird, especially if angered by it. It flew off with the scarf, but somehow Sakamoto had it at the end of the episode.
There are a few connected segments that end up playing out almost identically to some other connected segments from a previous episode. This time, the mohawk gets shaven! I'm guessing that will stay that way, but that's quite the change. Maybe they'll find a way around keeping it like that.
Mai's trolling is in full force here, especially after Yukko tries to avoid it. It finally gets so epic that she can't resist, and realizes that her role of straight man to Mai's epic trolling is the greatest role she could possibly serve.
And the card scene. Best dialogue-free scene... ever? Yeah, probably... Well, the three of spades talks, but not until after the actual scene (which is really long by this show's standards, but it only gets better and better because of it). I could definitely tell who the seiyuu was this time.

- The most serious house of cards ever.
- Hhaaha, Mai you are the worst. Right through the house. I love you.

- EHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!? <3 <3 <3 <3
- Mai and the crows!
- Hahah, Nakamura-sensei is going to get the whole school killed. Also, SAVE ANNAKA!! ;_;
- No more tsukkomi from Yuuko? Good luck with that...
- ...it just hit me, but Yuuko's hair seems a little longer than usual. Actually, her cuteness in general is way up this episode for some reason. I usually find her a lot of fun but not necessarily especially cute, but there's some tweak to her design in some scenes this week that really does it.
- And god, this was a brilliant sketch. Yuuko finally giving in to her tsukkomi urges at the end and experiencing pure bliss had me cracking up. The bit about contacts at the end was gold.
That episode was a hell of a lot of fun. As usual!

Did anybody notice a few oddities with the art and animation this episode? Nichijou so far has had some incredible production values but this time something seemed a little off. The art looks weirdly flat and everyone's hands seems to have this strangely thick border, and the animation isn't as.. smooth?
The episode itself is fantastic, hilarious, and had a lot of really great music, especially during the card scene, but something just.. looked off. Did anyone else notice anything weird or am I just imagining things?

Seemed pretty obviously deliberate to me. Nichijou has utilized a bajillion different art styles, even within the same episode. The only difference I saw was that Yuuko looked subtly but significantly cuter in her scenes - when she wasn't being intentionally drawn in a silly style, like the flat art/rigid hands bit you mentioned.

I'm certainly aware of Nichijou's various different artstyles through out different situations, but this one wasn't like a one off artstyle to fit the gag, like say.. the running-through-the-corridors-to-get-the-notebook-back scene. This artstyle was consistent throughout the episode unlike most of the other styles.
Though thinking about it now, yeah it does seem deliberate. It was just so jarring to me as once a gag is done it goes back to it's normal style, where as with this it just rolled with it.

...Okay, that was probably the best episode this series has had so far. And yeah, the artstyle did look a little different from usual, though I was unable to pinpoint exactly what it was that was different. Ah well...
Anyway, crow. Wait, didn't we already see a crow voiced by Daisuke Ono in another KyoAni-series once upon a time? Are crows voiced by that guy such a common occurence that they can appear in two otherwise completely unrelated series by the same company? Or okay, I guess it is possible that they gave him the role because he's done the same thing before... Well whatever the case, that crow was epic.
Also, silent-movie card house segment. Pure awesome.

It's just that so many of the scenes she was in in the first cour were about how monumentally stupid she was. The emotional torture Mio would go through trying to cheer her up. The over the top reactions that would go on for too long. So I grew to enjoy the moments when Mai would pull pranks on Yuuko. Yuuko did have some wonderful funny moments like the deer suplex bit, but that easily could have been done by "Eeeeeeeh!" girl to better effect. Thus my "hatred" of Yuuko built up over time. She was adding nothing to the comedy of the show for me.
Until what I feared most. Her interacting with nano. That could have robbed me of my favorite part of the show. Hakase & nano just being cute. Some how through some arcane magic Yuuko and Nano actually work together fantastically. It's honestly almost as if someone new is writing Yuuko. She's less of a painfully stupid character. Yet it's hard to get past the 15 or so episode of me really not liking her. Thus I enjoy when not just Mai but the very cosmos seems to be trolling her.

Is it just me or did Mai actually look sad about the fact that Yuuko wasn't "reacting" as easily this time around?

- Or it could end up even worse. I had to laugh out loud, twice, when they cut to the catastrophe in the back yard. XD
- "Sacrifice Sakamoto!" :sd:
- And Hakase winds up admitting fault. But Nano is a terrible disciplinarian, so... heh. Man, I want some omelet rice. Have never had one but it looks fucking delicious.
...Uhhh and I just got distracted for about 15 minutes talking about omurice with strangefour and linking how-to videos on youtube, even though I've never cooked in my life and never will. Back to the episode. :sd: What a weird diversion.
- First Yuuko teaching Mio something, now Yuuko being the only one to do an assignment? WHAT!?
- HAHAHAH, okay, Yuuko's coin missing the donation box was waaaaaay funnier than it should have been. God damn. This show.
- HAHHA WHAT THE FUCK XD And then it gets a million times better. WHY IS THIS SHOW SO GOOD!?
- Yuuko's head!
- The whole shrine is falling apart. o_O
- Fuck that was an incredible skit.
- Oh, it was a vending machine. Man I really enjoy these blurry static camera bits.
- Igo soccer? For real?
- Haha, great, referee a game you don't understand. Despite being the club president of it.
- Well okay there was no understanding that anyway. :sd:
This show is unquestionably worth every one of the approximately $1,005 USD I'm spending on it. Love it. I just can't believe we're already 19 episodes in!

It's almost as if Misato is trying to have the worst excuses possible. Photon Belt? I mean really. In any case, her younger sister is as cute as be expected.
Mihoshi being amused by Yuuko was one of the definite highlights of the episode.
The structure of Helvetica Standards gets stranger every episode. It's like anything can happen in that universe. Students discussing coffee? Angels teaching people how to speak properly. All of it is apparently possible in this world.
Although it would be nice if we had more names.
Yuuko's dreams about Mio are great for us because we get to see Starla. Although I wish they'd focus more on Starla. As in more camera time for her. Her design is quite nice.
Still having her go from being in distress to being err evil(?) is quite interesting. Either this is an alternate story or she's still bitter about past events.
I think on occasion we get stuff like Starla, Helvetica Standard, and some random scenes of regular folks to remind us about the title. Or maybe I'm thinking too hard. Also, I've probably been up too long.

.... So Mio has a compulsive need to break rules and do things wrong when it comes to athletics?
That Igo Soccer segment must have been the single most bizarre scene in the series yet. And Nichijou has already set that bar fairly high.

-Heno heno! This will haunt my dreams too Sakamoto.
-Mio is conscripting her friends into furthering her fujoshi art future.
-Mio's outfit with ink absorbing sleaves is cute.
-This is how Nano finds out about sex for the first time. Hakase is going to have to have a long talk with her after this to explain everything.
-In eternally tormenting her, the universe has inadvertently granted Yuuko some Gunbuster levels of power.
-Mai is your backgrounds, trolling like your man love.
-Yuuko. Doing what you expect. Screwing up.
-Mai. You have taken trolling to a zen art form.
-Nano's been gone a loooong time.
-Sakamoto is a nobody.
-That actually does suit Yuuko for some strange reason.
-Hakase has tricked out the house like the mansion from Clue.
-Aww Hakase needs a hug.
-A pet will take after its master.
-They're still arguing about the spilled in. Hasn't a day passed at this point?
-"NO THANK YOU DAIYO!"
-Mio and Yuuko are the weirdest couple. Always arguing about the strangest little things.
The manga making section was the majority of the episode, and sadly rather predictable. Not that it wasn't funny. I was just hoping for some new twist on the old getting your friends to help you finish a manga in one day trope. Well I guess Mai's trolling took things beyond the usual. Bless her evil little broken mind.

...You know Mai, there is a certain difference between messing around and just plain bullying people. At least Yukko was trying to help, even if she was miserably failing at it...
And since that took up almost the entire episode, I really don't have much else to say, beyond...
That segment with Mai and the dog totally reminded me of how my mother's cat used to behave when she first got it. Totally insistant on getting in the way of absolutely everything you try to do

Already episode 20! ;_;
Episode 20:
- Hahaha, oh god poor Sakamoto, that would be completely terrifying.
- Best OP <3 Definitely grown on me enough to import this OP too.
- Mio wears such weird outfits sometimes... I think she's wearing a patchwork quilt. But she always looks so damn cute! Oh and I like the ink on her fingers. Just a nice touch.
- But man, she's really going all out mangaka now! ...Is she reall ready to let everyone see the BL though?
- Oh, and they explain just that. She's doing well and has decided to be more open about it.
- Hahahaha, Nano can't handle it. XD
- ...O_O I swear, sometimes this show plays a gag very deadpan, which is funny. Sometimes... it destroys the solar system. Which is also damn funny. :sd:
- Mio, you should really, really know better than to ask Mai for help.
- Or Yuuko for that matter. Poor, Poor Mio.
- "Because this manga isn't very interesting." Haha soooo cruel.
- Helvetica Standard! ...>_> I think that counts as cheating.
- "Go read a book." XD
- And god I can't wait until Yuuko hands that page to Mio...
- ...Assuming she lives long enough.
- HAH, she just gives up and inks it over again.
- Come back in, Nano... they need you.
- Yes! Mio's sister!! With Misato?
- Oh right, kendou.
- Mihoshi too! <3
- Expiration: 201-. Heh.
- Sakamoto-san just shabba dabba doo'd. o_O
- Hakase's "pupupu" laugh is the best.
- Hah, she has a hidden room. That's cheating!
- Awww she thought they wouldn't find her.
- Mai is being trolled by her dog. How does it feel!?
And at the end... holy shit, Mio. XD Oh my god I would give anything to watch Aizawa Mai acting out that scene. Daaaaaamn. I wonder if that was all part of one take? :sd:

Why the hell does Mio trust Yuuko and Mai with helping her? Is her memory last several minutes?
Yuuko, destroyer of worlds.
Yabba dabba do!
Holy shit. Mio yelled at Yuuko for five minutes over the paper that Yuuko HAD IN HER HANDS. Come to think about it, Yuuko did something right?

Mai is the world's biggest troll/bully. Mai, if you don't like Mio's manga, just don't bother helping. And Nano's reaction was precious! XD
I did a double take at Sakamoto's Shabba dabba doo! Craziness! XD

Almost the entire episode was just one segment, and it wasn't like the ones where Nano first went to school and stuff actually happened. It was just one gag. And it was glorious. Everyone is at their best. Why Mio thought that letting these friends help her with her manga would result in anything other than the most epic meltdown ever is perhaps the most difficult to understand concept in this show's entire 20 episodes of whatthefuckery thus far. BL breaks Nano's systems. Yukko destroys the solar system. Mai surpasses trolling to reach full-on bullying. And then Mio's meltdown. Most anime couldn't pull off making a gag last for nearly the entire episode, much less making the punchline last about a quarter of the episode. I don't think it's terribly surprising at this point that this one can pull it off, but it was still amazing. I guess with the whole episode being one gag, it allows for many other gags and punchlines within it, and even those have deeper levels of smaller ones in them. But overall, that long one at the end was definitely the best payoff. And there was lots of of KyoAni busting out the epic animation style to further illustrate just how epic a high school girl writing BL doujinshi can be.
Also, Mai's dog is already such a god-tier troll, it can troll her without her being able to best it.

Whut. Mio is actively getting her friends to see her manga? What madness is this? And she makes the completely insane decision to ask for their help.
It went on about twice as long as it should have though. Mai's gag god old after the second time and seeing Yuuko's attempts to fix the mess she made weren't really funny to begin with (seeing her fret over it right after it had was plenty, the rest was excess... except getting Mai to help, that part was okay. Seeing Yuuko try to draw it herself 2-3 times was kinda dull). Mio's rage-filled rant at the end was awesome though.
I didn't know you could cheat at Hide-and-Seek (for the hiding part anyway, I can imagine some ways to cheat for finding people thanks to the proliferation of cell phones), but Hakase found a way.
Heh, and Sakamoto reeeeeeally wanted to play the Seeking part. Shabba dabba doo!!
And apparently Misato knows Mio's older sister. We haven't gotten nearly enough of Misato's little sister though.

The Sirens of Titan, seriously? Thats some goddamn random referencing.
I really can't fault Mio for her rant there at the end, Yuuko was pretty much being a massive dick.
And never ask Mai to do anything. It will never work and you won't get the satisfaction of screaming at her about it later.

Wood cube returns! No Wakamoto involved, but about as epic as it could be without him. This fantasy Mio is the ultimate badass. I think I could probably watch an entire episode of that. Considering almost the entire previous episode was Mio's manga failures, it wouldn't surprise me. I suppose KyoAni doesn't necessarily have such a huge budget that they can have an entire episode of that awesome animation.

-Happi~ Happi~ Happi~ Happi~ Happi~ Happi~ *repeat*
-Ouch. Pocky eyes.
-AC/DC! |m|
-Weboshi & Fe are such weird names.
-Poor normal Fe.
-Twin tail Sakurai sensei! She is to brilliant to stare directly into.
-Sakurai is really tiny. Eat more onions.
-Yuuko is ruining this "date"?
-GOOD ENOUGH! hehehehe
-Nano is afraid of kissing. Well who can blame her after Mio's manga ruined her.
-Sakurai and Mai alone in a room. *snuggles in for trolling* :D
-Mai will become the Buddha.
-Oh shit. Zepplin elf part 3. I didn't expect her to be back until the last episode.
-Mio! *gasp* What could this mean?
-Huh the numbers have developed individual faces and titles. Just in time for them to DIE!
-Menma is magic!
-Someday KyoAni will make a fighting anime. And it will be awesome.
-Oh so that's how you top blocks and pompoms falling.
-No scientist can out cute Hakase. Don't even bother trying.
I don't want this show to end. It's weekly does of zany cuteness is necessary. I just started to like Yuuko and now they will take her away.

Episode 21:
- Luck is not on your side, Yuuko. It never is. And never will be.
- There were about 30 angles more than necessary on that book smacking scene.
- OP <3 <3
- MIHOSHI! Yes! More of her!
- Weboshi and Fe-chan! YAAAAAAY!
- Hahaha, pocky in the eyes.
- Weboshi likes mohawk. She thinks he's a bad boy... she couldn't be more wrong.
- Misato is the most transparent tsundere ever. She can't stand other guys getting praised more than her Sasahara. :sd:
- 6 yen shop?
- !! Sakurai-sensei in casual clothes and little twintails? ADORABLE!
- Seriously can't get over how cute she is. Almost can't blame Takasaki-sensei for losing his cool. ...almost.
- Hahah, and they run into Yuuko.
- Hoooooly shit he is freaking the fuck out. Yuuko is speechless. XD
- Blushing Nanoooooo!
- So much talk about the Gap in this episode.
- She left short circuit-kun behind...
- Oh no. OH NO. Sakurai-sensei, Run! Don't be alone with Mai! You can't handle this!
- Okay she got off easy. By just giving up. :sd:
- Clouds? Does that mean...
- Yes it does!
- o_O Oh shit. MIO. And she does not look happy.
- Mio can make things explode >_>
- Haha oh god, this is the most dangerous workplace ever.
- Good morning, Yuuko.
- And goodnight, Shinonome family.
