-Phoenix already? Flashforward maybe?
-Wolverine is the best at what he does. What he does is growl like a dog.
-I'm just filled with anticipation to find out what "bub" is in Japanese.
-Lots of stock (but fantastically animated) shots of people reacting to things.
-Cyclops wears the shoulder flared outfit of a Daimyo?
-Starring Halle Berry (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/strangefour/icons/1301760033126.jpg) as Storm.
-Hehehe. Ekuzebior.
-Oh cool that wasn't a flashforward. Jean Grey is gone. Hurray. Maybe Cyclops will get to be an interesting character now.
-"Jean Grey. She Will Rise Again." That's kind of an ominous thing to put on a headstone there Professor X. Totally true for any comicbook character. But -still creepy and taunting.
-Xavier spends all day having a dream about being a horrible babysitter.
-Elsewhere, minature Sentinels harass Akiyama Mio.
-You do not fuck with Storm's vacation time. I guess the X-men are not hated and hunted by the world the struggle to protect in this series. Or everyone on this cruise ship is drunk and/or a mutant lover.
-Beast is friend to all Ika-musume.
-Hai~ Devil-fish-sensei~ Hehehehe.
-AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH AHAHHAHQAHA *falls out of chair* WOlverine trying to go through an airport metal detector is great.
-Xavier, "My X-men, you must save this young japanese girl. We must ensure her safety if there is ever to be a K-ON movie. And god willing a third season."
-Beast, "What is her mutant power exactly?"
-Xavier, "Moe!"
-Heheh. Ulbarin.
-Really like the ending song scrolling image.
Well that was fun. Better than I expected for an introductory episode. Not that that much beyond Scott being his angsty old self and a kidnapping happened. The animation quality has to drop from here on out because it was basically good OVA quality. I laughed a few times. I really didn't expect that to happen. I really only know X-men from the old Fox cartoon and the movie, but I enjoyed this episode.

I laughed at the image of Stryfe in the ending credits. Talk about a character you DON'T want to touch in a 12-episode adaptation.

Was that the dude in the silly armor? I half recognized him from FoX-men, but couldn't remember a name.

That was much better than I expected after what happened with Iron Man and Wolverine.. looks like Madhouse were saving the best for last. Love the production values and attention to detail... Storms always been a fav of mine and I really like this look for her, nice to see Aya Hisakawa get that role.
Thankfully this won't cover the Dark Phoenix saga.. so tired of that.. and it also means.. FUCK YEAH EMMA FROST. Will be following this for sure, better first episode than most and with Emma Frost to come I'll be watching.

That's him. He wasn't in the 90s cartoon though - actually he hasn't been in any adaptation, period. His backstory is just too convoluted for anybody to bother adapting. (If you remember Cable from the old cartoon, Stryfe is essentially Cable's evil clone.)
The other reason I laughed is that, of the four villains in the ending credits, three are classic, iconic X-Men villains, while Stryfe is a nobody. It boggles my mind that somebody in Japan thought of him, and thought to draw him alongside the likes of Magneto and Mystique.
As for the headstone - that's word-for-word what the actual headstone in the comics reads. I was quite impressed with that actually. I thought in general this episode was much more concerned with details from the comics than the previous two shows were.
I suppose I should mention the costumes. The show doesn't make a big deal of it, but in the flashbacks all the characters are wearing traditional-style costumes, while in the present day all the characters are wearing movie/Morrison-style costumes. The movie-style costumes work really well and are probably the right choice for the series, but I hope we get a few more flashbacks with the old costumes. It does seem like quite a bit of design work went into them and it would be a shame not to see them again.

I was once given a thumbnail description of Stryfe's backstory.
My reaction was pretty much o_O

Yeah, I got a good chuckle out of that. Who knew that Dr. Henry McCoy is an Ika-Musume fan. Maybe when this series is over he'll watch her second season later this year :P .

I thought Madhouse did a nice job with the first episode, and outside of Scott being his usual angsty self (which was something I always had a problem with during my heyday of reading X-Men comics in the 90s) it was a good intro episode. The character designs look really good and the storyline thus far seems pretty interesting.

-Stop crying sad parents. People will understand mutants. But only when on cruise ships.
-So Japan is practically crawling with mutants. Well was until some mad scientists showed up.
-Damn racist Japanese convinience store owners. They ruined CHristmas time!
-You are a dude with LASER EYES! WHy do you need to use mini missles Scott?
-U-Men make some creepy organic skeleton looking light saber weilding skull faced skiing robots.
-Damn it Scott. Stop being a pussy.
-Wait a minute... monsterously mutated kid takes the full brunt of LASER to the face and ends up looking better afterwards? Does Cyclop's eye beam hurt anyone besides Wolverine? Seems more like a giant glowing red taser.
-Aww Wolverine likes Cyclops. He just gave him the helpful "Manly Punch" to cheer him up.
-Mio and Emma Frost have been found. Would you like to recruit them to the team Cyclops: Yes/No?
I do hope Scott is a bit less of a wussy after a few episodes. This could get annoyoing. That is one crazy outfit for a "teacher" to be wearing Emma. The outfit's a tad slutty even for a sex ed teacher who sleeps with her students.
Fun episode though and it still looks too good for TV.

Yeah, but if there is anything we know about Japan, they love to put in anything convoluted just to make a series sound sophisticated.

-Phoenix already? Flashforward maybe?
I wondered about that. Why start with a character's death? I'm guessing that the Inner Circle is behind the trouble in Japan, and this gives the cast some history with them.
-Starring Halle Berry (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v621/strangefour/icons/1301760033126.jpg) as Storm. My first thought on seeing her in the photograph was that she was unexpectedly cute. It seems like she's the emotional glue for the team.
-"Jean Grey. She Will Rise Again." That's kind of an ominous thing to put on a headstone there Professor X. Totally true for any comicbook character. But -still creepy and taunting. Yeah, I mean sure she's the Phoenix and all. But given what she was doing when she died... Not really looking forward to a return engagement.
-Xavier spends all day having a dream about being a horrible babysitter. So does this mean Mastermind is screwing with Xavier's mind?
-You do not fuck with Storm's vacation time. I guess the X-men are not hated and hunted by the world the struggle to protect in this series. Or everyone on this cruise ship is drunk and/or a mutant lover. Since they were about to be robbed/raped/killed/etc, it would take a pretty dedicated anti-mutant to not feel some gratitude.
-AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH AHAHHAHQAHA *falls out of chair* WOlverine trying to go through an airport metal detector is great. And he has total attitude over it, like they're so unreasonable. Of course, he's probably real sick of it by now.
It's pretty much always been Wolverine's role to verbally jab Cyclops, but I still want to say that it's fun to hear.
I like it a lot. It's jarring hearing them speak Japanese, since all previous experience with them has been in English, but really like it overall.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised with these first two episodes. I've never seen the Ironman and Wolverine animes (and everything I've heard about them makes me think I made the right choice) and watched this only because the "U-Men" seemed like a wonderfully grotesque villain concept.
But this show is actually really good! The animation and art is excellent, the characters have well defined personalities and good interaction, and each episode left me wanting more. Overall it's a really strong start and if they can keep the quality from declining to much this could really be something exceptional.
Why didn't they make the other two like this?

-Inner Circle? Did the Hellfire Club get a new name in this continuity or is this just another X-Men thingy I've never heard of.
-Emma. That's blouse is a perfect "sexy teacher" Halloween costume. But not appropriate for the middle of winter in Japan if you are a real teacher.
-Mio is not a morning person. (Yeah yeah, her name is Hisako. But damn it thinking of her as a member of K-ON is funnier.)
-I hope Storm isn't sidelined all the time after she uses her powers once. That could get annoying.
-Nice to see Beast tearing into a gaggle of robots.
-Sorry Xavier, but they can not hear you now.
-Warning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-bllC9mkIc&t=16s)! A huge cyborg cenobite boss battle has started.
-ARMOR SMASHING ROBOT PUUUUUNCH! :D
-Emma: "Believe in the me that believes in you."
The animation quality somehow continues to be gorgeous here. The fight scenes are great, the talky bits even look good. Whatever Marvel is paying for this show seems to be worth it. Emma thankfully is likeable. Hopefully Cyclops will see that soon. Armor is shaping up to be exactly what I expected of her in anime terms. Adorable and super robotically awesome when armored up.

Another good episode with great production values. Looks like the first two weren't a fluke after all. Seems Cyclops is over his angsting now (mostly). Is Emma telling the truth or is this just an elaborate deception? Hmm. Her presence in the Op would seem to indicate the former. Minor plot hole with Storm, since Wolverine can regenerate he could survive her lightning, right? Would have made more sense for the bad guy to have an electricity absorbing device or something.
Also, in the beginning of the second episode when the black U-Man was talking to the guy with the beard, was he supposed to be the same guy from the first episode or a different character? I can't really tell as we never get a good look in either scene.

He won't be in this series, Wolverine apparently had random villains shown in the ED who never appeared in the anime. I'll say it's the same for this series... just why he's shown with other iconic villains is a bit... lolwut? It would be like if someone did an NBA montage and had Jordan! SHAQ! Kobe! CARLOS BOOZER!!!! (OMG.. who?) and LeBron!!!

You never heard of them being called the "Inner Circle"? I though it was common knowledge from most X-Men fans that the core members of the Hellfire Club were always referred as the Inner Circle. At least it was mentioned a few times during the Dark Phoenix Saga storyline back in the day.

Well my experience with X-men is the cartoons and movies. I've never read any X-men comics. Comicwise I'm only familiar with Wolverine popping up in other people's comics or any mention I hear about the X-men on comicbook podcasts (http://awesomedbycomics.blogspot.com/). So I'm not really an X-men fan. I just happen to be more interested in them than Ironman or Wolverine on his own.

-This half dead zombie cyborg guys attacks are being animated a bit confusingly or sloppily.
-Hisako has a groupie. She really is like Mio.
-Damn that is one huge house.
-Everyone making Cyclops annoyed makes me happy. Or maybe he's just tsundere for Emma. :3
-There's a man on the wing of the plane!
-Wolverine: "I'll handle this. Give me three shurikens and a blind fold. "
-I seriously have no fucking idea what is going on in this fight. There's like a black blob dancing around the black jet and Wolverine is probably there somewhere but he's dressed in black. It's just a mess of black and motion blur.
-Harpie boy didn't react very well to his anti-David Haller Syndrome shot.
-Beast: "He's dead Jim."
-Emma is in a very low cut hospital gown. You are one perverted doctor, mister McCoy.
Either the animation finally caught up to a limited budget or whoever storyboarded the fight choreography in this episode is a moron. I sure hope the animation was rushed and it's a one time occurrence. The animation quality doesn't have to stay as gorgeous as the first few episode, but that was a horror show of unreadability in that mid-air fight.

The Noein and Birdy comparisons are apt, but I don't think Norio Matsumoto's work on Naruto is. While his work gets the usual ignorant reactions of "Look at this freeze framed shot! It's off model, so this is horrible", it's pretty clear that he's a few cuts above all the rest of these gifs animators like Tomoyuki Niho and Kenichi Kutsuna (both who worked on this episode, the former handling the storyboard).
That said, most of the complaints thrown against this episode could be seen coming a mile way ever since the episode's main staff was posted on Newtype. The ones who can appreciate this kind of work will continue to do so, and those who can't remain will remain in the dark. It's hard to execute a mass education program on how to appreciate animation beyond "stay on-model, fluidity".

Saw most of Noein, the hectic fights kind of worked there from what I remember. Character designs were strangely fluid anyway. Birdy never saw. Did he do the Naruto vs Sasuke (with wings) fight at the waterfall? That was as far as I saw in Naruto and rather liked that fight.
But man that harpy blob vs Wolverine fight was possibly the most in comprehensible battle I have ever seen animated. Was like a shaky camera filming deflating black balloon animals next to a fog machine.

Matsumoto did most of the fights in 133. That's the episode before Sasuke gets his wings.
I won't deny that the framing for this fight was... a bit ambitous. This is Niho's first time storyboarding and the framing could have been better. Apparently Animax Japan isn't all that well known for their good video quality either, so handling a lot of motion + dark scenes with colors that look very much alike= bad idea.

I going to have to echo comments on the incomprehensibility of that mid-air fight. I "appreciated" this kind of work in Birdy and Noein, and understand the reasoning for using a more "messy" style. But never while watching the fights in Birdy and Noein did I wonder "WTF is happening!?", of which that mid-air fight was two minutes worth. If I can't even comprehend what's being animated, I can't really call it anything but poor work.

It was still good about the non-fight scenes. Some of the camera angles had odd perspectives. The fight against zombie cyborg guy at the start was not so good (Hisako was kind of flailing about in the sky for a bit) but you could tell what was going on with it. Hisako was adorable though, so that makes up for everything but the jet fight. As long as something like that never happens again this will remain in my top three shows of the season.

-Sentinel: "ROCKET PUNCH!"
-Did Capcom design the Danger Room software? Sentinel is always a cheap bastard.
-Did Scott just paraphrase Spider-man? Heh.
-Half circle forward and punch Hisako!
-I think Emma Frost's mutant abilities take up the part of her brain normal humans use for fashion sense.
Lots of talking this episode. Little bit of Hisako figh-- well running away then a bit of punching. But now Scott's less of a jerk after being super jerky.

Gee, Cyclops - I know Armor has a cool mutant power and all, but she's still just a kid. Take it easy on her  .
Though I did liked how he was able to coach Hisako into controlling her ability. Proof that he's not that much of a jerk.

-Even a small weak japanese girl can be an X-man too. *pandering*
-So the people of this area of japan have been slowly evolving into dinosaurs.
-Deformed trees. The ground leaking horrible fluids. A twisted bridge. This looks like a job for Bruce Campbell.
-Uh you do remember that your vision is an anti-missle weapon don't you Cyclops? Guess not.
-The Blackbird is being devoured by bukka-- err I mean snow. Yes just snow. :sd:
-U-men giant robot looks kinda like Onslaught and has been hanging around in the OP bugging me.
-It has giant self heating sake can fin funnels and an anti-Storm kite.
-Hisato: "Don't you dare touch my slutty teacher!"
-Nice kick Emma. Have you been watching Kamen Rider while in japan?
-Hehehe. While Cyclops is eye blasting the robot Hisako does a happy Breast Fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPHkDHLh7bU) pose.
-Time to run away from Afro Predator before he self detonates.
-Emma needs to learn to pack a sweater.
-Mio has found Yui-sempai once more.
Well the pacing of the first half felt a bit off. Seemed like some child's story to get the X-men in the right place to fight the big badguy of the week for the big battle. Ya know, tossing toys into a snowbank. But the animation and fight was fun again so I shouldn't complain.

-In Japan snow is made of diamonds.
-Professor X has a bastard child!
-Had a bastard child. Or Yui is a crazy lying bitch.
-Um, why isn't Wolverine even trying to use his claws to cut at the crystal snow?
-Wolverine is bored. Wolverine attacks a snowball. Snowball wins.
-Suddenly ninjas from the village of hidden snowmen attack.
-Scott and Emma share a moment. Is this leading somewhere romantic?
Episode played out slowly and simply. Still fun though.

-Yui, cosplaying as Sawa-chan, gets jumped by a rabid fan.
-Giant angry heavily armored bug monster. Did this just become an episode of Blue Gender? Also since when do log cabins have industrial boiler rooms in their basement?
-Wait wait wait... First a human bat hybrid monster (http://s3.invisionfree.com/DTBlack/ar/t812.htm). Now a mutated man spider (http://s3.invisionfree.com/DTBlack/ar/t811.htm). Wolverine comes in to flying kicks it (http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs50/f/2009/295/c/1/Kamen_Rider_Black_RIDER_KICK_by_NeonGenesisGuyverI II.jpg). Wolverine is a Kamen Rider without a helmet.
-Armor Jump! Armor Chop! Hisako is Wolverine's intern.
-Hehehe. Wolverine all but calling a guy a pussy for running away screaming is fun.
-Has Yui been trying to make Zoanoids on purpose or is she just a crappy scientist?
-Why would you eat Wolverine? Wolverine will give you the worst case of indigestion you've ever had (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Furmanism#THE_WORST_CASE_OF_INDIGESTION_IT.27S_EVE R_HAD).
-Is Xavier going mad or did the sky just rip open and suck him in?
Yui, you are a horrible liar and possibly an idiot. Fun episode.

06-05-2011, 01:55 AM
-Yui finally admits to not being a completely oblivious scientist. But still refuses to tell all.
-Beast will have none of your nonsense lady.
-We're sorry, but the Professor you're trying to call is no longer in this dimension. Please hang up and try again on the astral plain.
-Xavier has a telepathic battle against the boss from Earthbound.
-Cyclops won't let Wolverine have any fun. You're supposed to open doors with claws not doorknobs Cyc!
-Hisako likes wild men... TMI little girl.
-Emma's old boss is a chatty little son of a bitch.
-Silly easily hypnotized Wolverine. Guess it's time for ye olde fight among friends because of mind control.
-Emma and Hisako captured by the human spooge...
-Behind door Number One we have... cliffhanger, dang it.
I guess this show is just one long arc set in Japan. Was kind of hoping for a few shorter tales from the start. But they're still looking for whoever is blocking telepathically finding mutants. Uh wait, if telepathy is being basically jammed. Then how come Emma & the Mastermind seem to be doing just fine with any other telepathic abilities? I suppose it's best not to think too hard about comicbook logic.

-The battle against a horned toad and a human puddle continues. Elsewhere Xavier is tripping out.
-Yui is a bad scientist. Very bad. No more research for you.
-Yui's also a big Star Wars fan. Designing a whole room to look like the tractor beam controls of a Death Star.
-She's not just bad, Yui is stupid and morally corrupt.
-Emma's right. You should be hurrying. Not standing around for half an hour chatting about about Yui's "science" and making Mio-- err Hisako cry. Mastermind is going to be all, "I did that 30 minutes ago" when you finally walk to the next room to catch him.
-Yeah yeah sickly little japanese boy in a jar is the son of Yui & Xaviar and the cause of all this mutant outbreak. We know, stop explaining it to death and get back to fighting.
-N-Neuron noodle?
-Xavier has finally returned from Hueco Mundo.
The twist of the source of the secondary stage mutations was exceedingly obvious. But aside from being overly chatty this episode was still good. Shame it ends so soon.

-Hisako's angry. Why did you go and maker her angry mister Mastermind?

-Even dead and an illusion Jean is still annoying. Get over her Scott. Emma's cuter and dies less often.
-Wolverine: "Come at me bro!"
-"Berseker Barrage!"
-Yes kill Jean! Err I mean kill the memory of Jean. Good Scott.
-Red sky. Cracking the sky. Turning into a giant spikey monster. Takeo has been watching Ultraman Ace.

-Well the earth is screwed. And it's all your fault Yui!
-It's time to play Name That Cameo!
-Angel, Colossus, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Deadpool, Captain freaking Britain?
-No one lies to Professor X and gets away with it lady.
-No Hisako, father should never fight son. So you should get in there and start punching!
-Uh guys, in case you haven't noticed, the Final Boss has cast Reflect on itself. Stop using magi-- mutant attacks!
-Charles, there's always a choice. This time the right choice is letting Hisako get all Gurren Lagann on your Anti-Spiral bastard son.
-Jean damn it can't you stay dead?
-Oh hey Tony. What are you doing in England?
-Never send an old bald man to do what a small japanese girl can accomplish.
-Good idea Hisako. Play matchmaker with Scott & Emma.
And so the day is saved thanks to the X-men! Well mainly Hisako being such a nice girl. And japanese to pander. I really did like her though. It's hard not to. She's a cheerful, fearful little bundle of teenage emotions.
I guess Professor X finally showing up did come in handy too. He tries to be a good father to mutants even if he does screw up alot. Though holy crap is Yui a horrible scientist and a horrible parent and a horrible ex-girlfriend. Hiding everything from everyone and just standing around mute or weeping most of the time. She was the real villain.
Oh and Iceman broke Magneto out of his plastic prison. I guess.
