I've been thinking of getting this series since I heard some good things about it, but I'm not sure if I want to get both the series and the OVAs or just the series. Is it better that I just get the core collection, and is the show worth it?

I own the True Book of Spells collection and must admit that I haven't watched the OVAs though I intend to do so someday. In answer to your question, yes, I think it's definitely worth getting. Both the visuals and the soundtrack are gorgeous, and the story is dark and compelling even for adults. My teen-aged daughter couldn't understand why I liked this show until she started watching it, then she finished it in a couple of days.

The pricing at RightStuf makes the combination of buying the series and the OVA individually quite a bit cheaper than the Book of Spells Collection. That version comes in a nice box, though.

I picked up the Core collection a couple of months ago as a blind buy and I just recently started watching it. I'm on the second disc now and it's definitely impressed me. One of the best series I've seen from MB.

In looks, it's quite unique. At times it actually reminds me of some of the visuals from the old Heavy Metal movie, at other times it feels a little like Gilgamesh. It's hard to explain, but it definitely has it's own style.

But of course, it's the storyline that counts and in this respect, it doesn't disappoint. It's all about a human girl who gets sucked into the realm of the witches and the culture clash between her and the way the young witches do things. It's quite a hoot.

As for the OVA'S, I don't know a thing about them, but I figure that if I like the core series (and I most likely will); I can always pick them up at a later date.

I first saw it raw at an anime convention a few years ago and just had to have it-when I found out it was gonna be released here dubbed I got the singles as they came out. It's really a fantastic series, the characters and story are incredible. The ovas are just as good as the main story line-they take place in between the middle episodes-basically side stories.
